As others have mentioned, a bit of a refresh could be in order. Never the less, our rooms were clean and the beds comfortable. We slept quite well. The indoor pool was a welcome pleasure after a long day of driving. We have no major complaints and would consider staying here again.
Stayed here during a vacation with my sister and 2 nieces. Good location to downtown Portsmouth and the staff was friendly and helpful but the room itself needed some work. No sink space in order to place items such as hair brushes, curling irons, etc. - there was barely enough room for soap. No hooks or racks for hanging towels to dry either? Are you kidding me? Very inconvenient.
It was the 2019 NH and ME Nostolgia Tour for me this past weekend. Having lived in Portsmouth, NH from 1974-1985 and in Exeter, NH from 2011-2018, there were lots of places I wanted to revisit. Though not exactly a "top of the line" choice, the price was right and there was availability for 6 consecutive nights at the Anchorage. The room (357) was large if it had not been for the TWO full sized beds (one Queen or King) would have been perfect). The lack of convenient plugs is pretty typical in older properties - the Anchorage opted for a very old box at a precarious angle beside the mini-regerator: not only unsightly but proably not in compliance with Code. Renovation is currently underway and no effort was made to make make the work effort orderly: a couple of rooms at the side entrance with doors either open or no longer on the higes were filled with furniture and equipment none of which was touched during our 6 nights. The security lock on the side door, was not operating. The last night of our stay, the lower level, visible from the side entrance, was in the midst of a flood. No effort was made by management to post signs indicating work in progress. Past water issues in the hallway next to the pool were apparent from stains on the carpet along with intense heat and humidity there. Carpeting on the third floor didn't match those on other floors rendering a rag-tag look when the elevator opened! Management/Owners REALLY need to come and stay on site a few nights AND read and pay attention to the reviews!…
Its so sad that a once nice hotel has turned into a rundown place that quite frankly is embarrassing. I do not like writing negative reviews, but can't help it with this one. From 2000 to 2012, we stayed at this motel many times. But we were here last year in 2018 and now this year in 2019 and it is definitely rundown and in need of a major remodeling. Everything was dirty, moldy, and worn out. The grout was even missing in our floor tiles over huge areas. I will say that the beds were comfortable and the breakfast bar was still good.
The front desk people were very pleasant. Other than that, this place doesn't have a lot going for it. My room was shabby, the bathroom was stained and falling apart, and the bed was lumpy. The breakfast was very bare-bones. (There is a small pool, which I did not try.) I chose this motel because of what I thought was a reasonable rate, and I wasn't expecting luxury, but for a place in this condition it was over-priced.
