My partner and I stayed here for a weekend get away and it was everything we imagined and more! The fall leave around the inn were breath taking and the house was spectacular. We loved our room, bed was super comfortable and the sheets were noticeably soft! Bill and Paula were wonderful hosts and attended to any need we may have had. Breakfast was spectacular! We intend to come back to the Buttonwood Inn!

My husband and I just returned from spending four nights at the Buttonwood Inn. We had Room 6 which is a large, yet cozy room. In addition, it has a large bathroom as well. Bill, the owner, was very welcoming and had many interesting stories about the house, area, and his and our home state, New Jersey. His wife, Paula, made a different and delicious breakfast every morning; and by late afternoon there was a dessert waiting for us. They did an excellent and professional job of creating a safe environment during this COVID time. Only half of the rooms are rented and each room has its own marked table in the dining room. They and all the guests wear masks at all times. We enjoyed sitting by the fireplace with a drink in the evenings and browsed at their books about the area. The Buttonwood Inn is up the hill away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Even though it’s just a three minute drive away, it feels like a setting in the deep woods. The Buttonwood Inn felt like a second home or like I was visiting friends. It’s truly a wonderful place to stay.

My husband and I spent four nights at the Buttonwood starting Labor Day weekend. We were in Room 10, which is the largest room and has its own entrance and a very nice sitting area. The house and grounds and our room were all lovely, clean, and very well maintained. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was great, and the innkeepers cheerfully accommodated our adult daughter's dietary restrictions. We enjoyed hiking in the White Mountains, hanging out in the backyard and using the pool and fire pit. Bill and Paula have gone out of their way to create a safe place during the pandemic. They are filling only six of their ten rooms at a time to be able to maintain lots of space between tables in the dining room at breakfast - closer to ten feet than six. Each guest uses one table for the duration of their visit, and everyone wears a mask except when seated for breakfast. Guests have the option to have their rooms cleaned each day or not. We chose not to, to reduce our exposure, and we appreciated the option. If we come back to the White Mountains, we will definitely stay at the Buttonwood again.

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed review of what we are trying to do for our guests during this pandemic. Though we've changed things to make it safe for our guests and ourselves, we strive to offer a full gourmet breakfast and afternoon baked treats in a worry-free manner. We also struck a common chord about our mutual appreciation of various artists and music. We do hope that you both return to the Buttonwood Inn.

We wanted to love this inn based on all the glowing reviews we read, but honestly, we barely even liked it. The hosts were not warm and friendly to us at all. We showed up a bit early for checkin and rang the bell. The owner Bill would not even open the door, and he told us to come back at 4pm or give him our cell phone number and he would call when our room was ready. We were hoping for that “welcome to our inn, let me check if your room might be ready” but instead we got come back at 4pm and call us from your car when you arrive. If we had not paid in full we would have taken our business elsewhere based on our very poor initial reception. It went down hill from there. When we did arrive the second time, we called from our car and the owner came out and took our temperature (covid protocol) and asked us questions that are required by the State. We did not know any of this “protocol” in advance, the owner said it was in our confirmation but when we checked, we did not have those instructions. Next we were given a short tour only to be told both sitting room common areas were closed to guests but the pool area outside was open. Our room #2 was super clean, bed was comfortable but the sitting chairs were not good and there was nowhere else to sit at the inn other than outside. Breakfast is from 8:30-9:30 but don’t even think you can get coffee before 8:30 am. We are early risers and like our coffee at 7am. You are assigned a table and given a half carafe of coffee. Food was very good but portions were small. We had yeasted waffles, bacon, and fresh fruit the 1st morning and scrambled eggs with ham and cheese and a muffin the 2nd morning. Our room was never made up and we did not have any housekeeping services for the 2 nights we stayed. No one asked if we needed fresh towels. We were not informed there would be no housekeeping services during our stay. The only positive is that the area is very quiet and there re many hiking trails near the inn. Our experience at this inn was not warm and friendly like we are used to at other places we have stayed. The owner seems very inflexible and not accommodating to any circumstances beyond his rules. We will not stay here again and cannot recommend it to others.

We are sorry to learn through your guest review that you did not enjoy your stay with us recently. During this pandemic, we are following the rules set forth in the COVID-19 Reopening Guidance by the Governor's Economic Reopening Taskforce. When you made your reservation online though our booking system, you automatically received the following information about our protocol : “COVID-19 Information - currently the State of New Hampshire requires that all visitors sign a document attesting to the following when visiting. Guests should call 603-356-2625 on arrival and will be met in our parking lot for a forehead temperature check and to answer the questions below……” When you arrived early in the afternoon, for the 4PM check-in, Bill explained, through the glass front door, that he couldn't let you in because rooms were still being turned and sanitized from the morning check-outs. He also advised that he would call you on your cell phone as soon as the room was ready and suggested a few of the nearby shops in North Conway that might interest you. Bill called you later, at around 3:20 PM to let you know your room was ready. Your response was you were shopping and would be there later and thanked him for the courtesy call. When you returned after 4PM, Bill, with a mask on, reviewed the COVID questions recommended by the State and CDC's guidance and checked your forehead temperatures in the parking lot. In your review you seem to take offense that the common rooms were inaccessible during the COVID-19 pandemic, even though it was explained to you during check-in that this was meant to provide a safe environment for all of our guests and is recommended by the CDC and mandated by the Governor of New Hampshire's most recent "Safer at Home" guidance in the "COVID-19 REOPENING GUIDANCE a copy of which was displayed at the front desk. Bill also advised during the check-in ‘tour’ that we do not enter guests rooms without the express request of the guest. We also explain to all of our incoming guests that we are only opening a portion of our rooms to reservations and because of that we are able to seat everyone comfortably in our dining room each morning for breakfast and maintain a minimum of 6 to 10 feet of social distancing. Fortunately we have ample outdoor seating on our porch, front and back yards, and around the very large 20 foot by 40 foot pool area that includes lounge chairs, two tables with chairs and umbrellas, and more chairs and benches above the pool area. Again, to ensure the safety of all of our guests, we are constantly sanitizing the outdoor furniture. Before the pandemic, we offered an early morning coffee and tea service and afternoon tea with baked treats on our buffet table. Other guests have requested earlier coffee or tea during this Pandemic and we have provided it in separate carafes yet you did not bring up the subject. Paula still provides a full gourmet breakfast and baked treats for guests on their assigned tables and each guest table has it’s own sweetener packets, cream/milk carafe and coffee/hot water carafe for those drinking tea. Bill constantly and consistently queries our guests as to whether they need more coffee or tea or milk etc. He definitely remembers hand pouring you coffee so why you would state you only received a 1/2 carafe of coffee is beyond us. Like other small lodging properties, we are the only employees. Our goal is to protect our guests and protect ourselves since we are also in the high risk category. We are limiting everyone’s potential exposure by not entering the guest rooms until check-out except, as noted previously and explained during check-in, upon the specific request of the guest. The overwhelming majority of our guests have stated that we do not need to enter their guest rooms during their stay and they prefer it that way. However, if you required clean guest towels, you simply could have asked us for them, again, as was explained to you at check-in.

Beautiful property atop a small hill in the North Conway area. Just minutes to town, hiking and swimming. Very friendly proprietors. The chocolate cranberry cookies were incredible. Wonderful breakfasts. Very reasonably priced. A hidden gem you should visit.
