Previous experiences with contactless inns have been perfunctory at best and feeling less than cared for at other times - not so here! Much care in communications from the very beginning. Upon arrival the method of entry, from parking to getting in the door, were easy, clear and went without a hitch, not bad for a building from 1820! The design team and the level of thought that went into the amenities could only be achieved by a gracious host with help from a well exercised and proven process I’ll call, “anticipatory design science” - these guests felt we cared for by the invisible hosts!
An absolute gem. I had the most wonderful stay at the Great Island Inn in New Castle. The location is quiet and makes you feel like you're on vacation but only minutes from downtown Portsmouth and the beach. Check-in was hassle-free and convenient after a long drive. The room had everything I could need with attention to detail going above and beyond. Not to mention the room was spotless. I will absolutely be returning. Thank you for such a nice experience!
We just came back from a 3 night stay at Great Island Inn. We loved that we had a studio apartment all equipped with everything we would need. This was our first time staying at place like this. You basically are on your own like renting an apartment. I was skeptical but we were extremely pleasantly surprised. Doug was very nice. We had a minor issue and he was on the scene immediately to accommodate us. We were glad we packed our coffee and breakfast items because Henry's next door is closed. Doug said it closed due to Covid. The town of Portsmouth isn't far but not easy to grab some coffee and an egg sandwiches to bring back to the room. The bed was extremely comfortable and so were the pillows. It was nice to have a dishwasher and washer and dryer in our room. There are items in the room to purchase such as water, beer, wine, alcohol and snacks. Prices were reasonable. We did travel off season and would have liked to have nicer weather to walk around the neighborhood. It was very quaint and well kept. We really enjoyed our stay.…
We took both rooms on the second floor (Suite # 3 and #4) for four days in August. My husband and I took one with a distant water view, and our adult sons shared the other. Both suites were immaculate and well-stocked. The kitchen is equipped for cooking (plates, cutlery, cups, pots and pans), the bathroom has a full washer and dryer which was great, and the beds in both rooms were very comfortable. We usually made breakfast there and then ate dinner wherever we were or did take out from one of the many restaurants in Portsmouth. There is a little spot next door to the Inn called Henry's Market that serves breakfast and lunch (and they make awesome cappuccino's! The backyard is set up with a grill, tables and umbrella, chaise lounges, etc., so on a nice day you can bbq and eat downstairs. New Castle is a quaint, picturesque village that is perfectly situated for sun and fun as the beach is right there, as well as fun day trips to other places. My husband and sons went to Maine on a fishing excursion one day (you're not very far from Maine) and hit a lobster pound on the way home. We had a local whale-watching tour set up; they visited the WWII museum in Wolfeboro and the USS Albacore submarine museum in Portsmouth. We also drove to Salem, MA one night for dinner and a great night-time tour with a guide who explained the sights and history (it was about an hour's drive). We did something different every day and my family really enjoyed it. The room is stocked with wine, beer and other goodies and all are very reasonably priced. It's a dog friendly hotel and pet sitting can be arranged too. We had a lovely stay at the Great Inn for a quick family trip before our boys went back to college. Shout out to Abby who was always super helpful. I highly recommend The Great Inn, and we look forward to going back!…
My husband and I had the opportunity to stay at the Great Island Inn July 28th-30th. All I can say is WOW! Our room ( #4) was beautifully decorated and spotless. Doug thought of everything…from a washer/dryer to beach towels and chairs available to use! We also loved the close proximity to Portsmouth. There was a great beach within a 5 minute walk from the inn. Right next door is a great little spot for homemade breakfast sandwiches. The inn has a parking lot right behind it for easy parking. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Great Island Inn! My one complaint is that our stay wasn’t long enough. We hope to return very soon!
We recently visited from May 26 thru May 30 and stayed in Room 5 - a gorgeous Queen suite overlooking the water. It was absolutely fantastic - we are already planning a return visit !! We appreciated their contactless check in/out - so easy and so very convenient. We also absolutely loved that they didn't have daily housekeeping - this was a huge plus for us because we were not pressured to be out each day by a certain time and could really relax in the room. And the room - wow ! It was lovely with a beautiful view of the water and windows that opened to allow in the sea breezes. The room aesthetics were so calming and there was such attention to detail in the choice of furnishing and decoration - it was soothing, comfortable and welcoming. It was well equipped with everything you could want in the kitchen, bathroom and even for a beach trip with towels and beach chairs readily available. Doug's online suggestions for dining out were spot on too - the area has a great food scene. It really suited us staying outside of Portsmouth because we found it so easy to take a short drive in, park in the Hanover parking garage in the middle of town, visit restaurants or bars, then drive back to the Inn for a quiet and peaceful night. We loved being able to stroll down to the beach or just wander around the streets of New Castle soaking in the lovely houses and gardens. Can not recommend it highly enough.…
A wonderful respite spot in February. The room was well equipped for cooking for a Celiac, had a washer/dryer, lovely linens and a comfortable bed. The neighborhood of houses from the 1700's made for great walking. A beach just three minutes away. Thank you, Doug
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Great Island Inn. Every inch of the space is thoughtfully and beautifully designed. I was looking for a cozy, comfortable, quiet, and immaculate retreat, and I got it. The bed was comfortable and the heated bathroom floor was a pleasant surprise. I had a view of the ocean from my room. The inn is a short walk to a park where you can sit and look at the ocean and listen to the waves crash against the rocks. This is a great place for cyclists. I rode my bicycle from the Inn up the coast of Maine to Perkins Cove, Ogunquit. The Inn's owner recommended a stop at the Foot Bridge Lobster. The lobster roll and fries were fantastic.
We were looking for a last minute stay and were delighted to find this little hideaway. Lovely area to walk and explore. Beautiful nautical decor, with everything you need to enjoy your time here. Having traveled here to be near a daughter in labor, we got the news a couple hours after arriving that the baby girl has arrived! Having Champaign already chilled in the fridge to pop was perfect! We hope to be back to enjoy this beautiful, cozy, exceptionally clean and inviting studio!
The Great Island Inn is a delightful two hundred year old inn renovated to provide a comfortable and well located destination. There are several restaurants nearby and the beach is a short walk away. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Pet friendly.
