I work at UNH but live just over 2 hours away so I stay at the Pines Guest House approximately one night a week and I couldn't ask for a more welcoming, comfortable, clean, and interesting place to spend the night. Mary Margaret welcomes me with a warm smile and Roger with a witty remark. The house is by the river and the setting is beautiful with deer sometimes roaming in the field. Thank you for sharing your 1760 historical house. I have stayed here for years and the owners and the place are true gems.
We appreciate our loyal guests who have stayed with us for multiple times - even years! They become friends rather than visitors as we anticipate their frequent stays. They become a part of our lives and we always enjoy catching up on the latest developments. It's like a good friend coming to visit.

    Cozy and Charming
It was my first time on the East coast and staying at the Pines Guest House was a wonderful decision. Mary Margaret and Roger were so kind and helpful. Mary gave us very helpful tips on where to park, eat, visit, tour, and whatever else we asked about. Our trip couldn't have gone better and they played a large roll in that. The room was exactly what we wanted, it was very charming and well kept. The history to the house alone was worth staying in my opinion. The breakfast was always more than enough and very tasty. I would definitely recommend this place for an extended stay. Thank you and I hope we see you again in the future!
Thank you so much for your kind words regarding your recent stay with us at The Pines. As long time residents of Durham, we are able to direct our many out-of-town guests to places to eat and shop as well as local attractions. As alumni, we also are able to supply information for locations and activities at UNH. Our separate full kitchen is always appreciated by our extended stay guests especially by our foreign guests who enjoy the opportunity to prepare familiar foods. An on-site clothes washer and dryer are most appreciated.

    Authentically Gracious Hospitality
The Pines gently coaxes you into an experience of refreshment and renewal. The houses itself dates from 1760 and spreads its charms throughout both public and private rooms. It is, at once, filled with art and remembrances of New England, and it is modern and comfortable. The hosts exude an authentic and caring hospitality: from the exquisite bowl of fresh fruit at breakfast to their attention to the details of your visit. I lived in Durham for many years and plan to return. As they say: this is a home away from home, and they are right. Thank you.
Such a beautifully poetic description of The Pines! We are truly a uniques experience and pride ourselves in maintaining a warm home-like atmosphere where our guests are warmly treated like friends. We believe our return rate is very high because of this and strive to maintain the charm of a old house with modern conveniences.

This is a beautiful bed and breakfast to stay in. I just needed a place to stay for one night and it was perfect. The breakfast in the morning was just what was advertised and perfect for me. I had control of the temperature in my room which was a plus in the winter and there was an extra blanket out as well. Everything was stocked in the bathroom. Mary is very kind and was quick with a restaurant recommendation when I asked. I would definitely recommend this to anyone staying in the area.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback on your recent stay with us at the Pines. We do our best to assist our guests with questions on the local area such as interesting places to visit or good places to eat. Because I have grown up and lived in Durham for many years, I have a good working knowledge of local attractions and businesses. We entertain many foreign guests who are not familiar with the area and they appreciate being in a home situation with people who can address their needs. If you ever get back to the area and need accommodations, we hope that you will keep us in mind. We have a large number of satisfied guests who often return multiple times and become friends.

Thanks so much for your kind comments. We are very conveniently located in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire, yet we are very close to attractions in Maine, the White Mountains for hiking and skiing and Boston with it's many historical sights. Our home is old (1760), yet we provide modern conveniences such as complementary Internet and flat screen TVs with cable in our rooms. Surrounded by towering pines and open fields, we provide a quiet and comfortable yet affordable alternative.

Had the good fortune to find your lovely bed and breakfast. I grew up in a true antique in Massachusetts- staying at The Pines was being at 'home.' Quiet, quaint and welcoming! We will definitely return. Great location for anything connected to UNH, the beach, shopping, farm stands, antiquing, etc! Thank you for a wonderful week!!!!

Thank you so much for your very complimentary review. We are always pleased when guests can relate to our historic home. Built in 1760 and maintained by the same family through multiple generations, we are proud to be able to share our legacy with our many guests. Our location is convenient to UNH as well as many seacoast attractions. By growing up here and being familiar with the area, we are able to direct our guests to various activities of interest.

If you are looking for a B & B with totally straight walls and perfect paint, this is not the one. However, if you are looking for a home that has been in the same family for generations and that exudes charm, attention to detail, cleanliness and friendliness, the PInes Guest House is for you. The hostess was interesting, helpful and charming as were some of the UNH graduate students who board there for short periods of time. Pictures of the family harken back to the 1700's including one of an ancestor named "Federal Constitution." Rooms are named after family members. The art collection is eclectic and fascinating including some done by the host. Very convenient to UNH.

Thank you so much for your positive review. We love entertaining guests who appreciate a historic family home from 1760's and understand that they will not always have "straight walls and perfect paint", but always have a certain character and personality. Being so close to UNH, we frequently house graduate students who stay long enough to become friends and provide an interesting mix with parents, visiting professors and others here to visit the college.

I had difficulty contacting the owner multiple times. I had the sense that she screens the calls rather than answer them at the time. The entry door is narrow as are the stairs. It was hot and humid and the air conditioner in our room struggled to cool the second floor room we occupied, which was overly crowded with furniture. It was difficult to get hot water in the shower and there were no glasses in the room for a drink of water. None of the guest rooms doors close completely without being slammed shut. We were unfortunate to have some inconsiderate children staying in a nearby room who were in and out of the room repeatedly late at night and early in the morning so it was quite noisy. Although we were advised of the time that breakfast was being served when we appeared in the dining room at the appointed time it appeared that breakfast had already been served with dirty plates lying out on the table and the host nowhere in sight. Breakfast appeared to be toast, dry cereal and fruit. Probably our most disappointing B & B experience to date.

We were somewhat surprised and confused by this recent review, Many of the issues mentioned could have been easily resolved with a word to the management, but nothing was said. The guests were offered a choice of rooms when they arrived and we would have happily moved them to another had they but asked. Every bed and breakfast is unique and visitors should be prepared to encounter situations that are not common to a standard hotel or motel, My reflection is that these guests were not accustomed to staying in an historic house like ours and perhaps found the unique quality uncomfortable, We strive to give our guests a pleasant stay, but we are unable to resolve issues that are unspoken.

Excellent place to stay if you have things to do in Durham, it's on a walking distance to the University of New Hampshire. The couple that runs it is lovely and helpful. They even took me out for dinner as a farewell. The only downside I can think of is if you're allergic to cats (they have 3, although they are well behaved).

Thank you for your positive comments on your recent stay with us. We enjoy treating our guests as friends or family and are pleased if they choose us for a return visit. Two of our cats have recently passed from old age, but although they have the run of the house, none of them are allowed in the bedrooms.
