Property's Favorite Review
Our family stayed at the Bar W Guest Ranch for my father's 70th birthday. We had kids as young as 2 up to my dad at 70. An epic time was had by all. Dave and crew could not have been more gracious or accommodating. The ranch is set in a little slice of heaven in the most picturesque valley outside Whitefish. There were daily cowpoke activities for the kids and incredible horseback rides throughout the area. There is also a lake to go boating or swimming. It had it all. But what really separates Bar W from the others are the people. We really felt like we and the other guest were part of one big family and we still keep in touch with many. If you are looking for a dude ranch for a family, couple, friends, or just by yourself, look no further than the magical Bar W Guest Ranch!!!

I struggle to write this review as I headed into this vacation with so Much expectation based on website and previous reviews. And every persons perspective and expectation is certainly different. So: Accommodation at the ranch average. Accommodation for the cattle drive third world level (I certainly wasn’t expecting luxury, but tents catching on fire, toxic smoke due to burning all trash in the campfire with swirling winds...not so much on my list) Food not very good and often carb loaded, veg shy Horses: broke. Equipment in deferred maintenance ( horse trailer broke down enroute to cattle drive experience (wheel flew off). kitchen tent caught fire multiple times. Trick broke down in return trip one of the glamo tents on the ranch lost heat for other guests. The shared bathroom wasn’t cleaned for days. Leadership: more interested in getting guests to bring and imbibe scotch by campfire than ensure safety and comfort of guests Staff: well intentioned wranglers but they seem to be in a bit of on vacation mode on the cattle drive. In some cases they were more interruptive with their high strung horses, and seemingly more interested in adventure than guests. On the ranch that was different. Authenticity: it was pretty staged with cattle in specific areas to be rounded up. Mind you, that probably needs to be done And was fun anyway. plus several guests seemed more interested in instagram ability of photos than riding Responsiveness: I told them I had no use for a photo cd as I have no cd but would appreciate a drip box access. I received a dvd that promptly went into the trash.

I guess that I am going to respond to this review in stages. I want to thank the reviewer for their review. "I struggle to write this review as I headed into this vacation with so Much expectation based on website and previous reviews. And every persons perspective and expectation is certainly different." I wonder the inference of much expectation based website and previous reviews. Our website accurately portrays the experience. So yes please read all of the wonderful reviews about our cattle drives, ranch, horses, food and staff. "So: Accommodation at the ranch - average." The reviewer reserved our most affordable room on the ranch that shares a bathroom with another room. The only two on the ranch that share a bath. It is certainly a comfortable room and we would agree that it is average, clean, and well appointed. The ranch also has glamping tents and a room with jetted tub, and cabin suites. "Accommodation for the cattle drive third world level (I certainly wasn’t expecting luxury, but tents catching on fire, toxic smoke due to burning all trash in the campfire with swirling winds...not so much on my list)" We build a “base camp” in the middle of 50,000 acres two days before the drive. It takes us from 7:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening. It consists of 5 wall tents 16’X 20” and a shelter for the fire pit in case weather rolls in. The cook tent did catch on fire once. This was due to the fact that we had two grills we cooked on for meals and because of the 50 mile an hour wind gusts we could not keep them lit and had to put them inside for the first time ever. The wind also pushed the tent into the side of the grills catching the tent on fire - once. Also, with the winds gusts the tent flap in one of the tents ripped the tent stake holder which allowed the flap to rest on the wood stove heater and burning it, but not setting it on fire. "Toxic smoke due to the burning of trash with swirling winds:" We do burn as much trash as possible – paper plates, napkins, cardboard, bottles, etc. This reduces our waste by as many as 10 full sized garbage bags. I would not say it was toxic smoke though. I guess that goes to the reviewer saying peoples perceptions may differ. "Food not very good and often carb loaded, veg shy" The food is prepared with grills and griddles. This is good food though it is not a paring of wine and menus as this reviewer likes to write about in her other reviews of other establishments. We are in the middle of 50,000 acres and the menu is prepared accordingly. There is an ample supply of vegetables and salads at each meal. "Horses: broke." Not sure what she is saying here. Our string of horses has taken us over 15 years to build and we work on it each and every year (each and every day for that matter). I am proud of this herd – it is first rate as noted in many of our other reviews. "Equipment in deferred maintenance (horse trailer broke down enroute to cattle drive experience (wheel flew off)." Each year we take every one of our vehicles to our mechanics and in a preventative maintenance strategy, give them cart blanch in repairing anything they feel will cause us trouble for the next 6 – 8 months. This costs us thousands of dollars each and every year. Before we go on the cattle drive we inspect everyone of the vehicles that go on the trip. This includes 4 Ford F350, 1 Ton, Duallys, 2 Ford Expeditions, 2 Ford E350 passenger vans, and 5 horse trailers. The drum of one of the trailers seized up and the tire was ejected. We had a replacement trailer by the time lunch was finished and we were on our way. We picked up the trailer on the way home. "Kitchen tent caught fire multiple times." The cook tent did catch on fire once. This was due to the fact that we had two grills we cooked on for meals and because of the 50 mile an hour wind gusts we could not keep them lit and had to put them inside for the first time ever. The wind also pushed the tent into the side of the grills catching the tent on fire - once. "Trick broke down in return trip" I think the reviewer meant “truck.” We did have a truck need service on the way home which did not impact any of the guests at all. The issue was the fuel line which was quickly addressed. "One of the glamo tents on the ranch lost heat for other guests." One of the electric heaters in the tents had the knob that turned the heater on and off, broken off. The shared bathroom wasn’t cleaned for days. We had a wooden two stall outhouse again in the middle of 50,000 acres. It was rudimentary and got the job done. It is authentic. "Leadership: more interested in getting guests to bring and imbibe scotch by campfire than ensure safety and comfort of guests" This I personally take umbridge to this comment. I was the leader on this trip and I do not conduct myself in that manner at all. Safety is the first and foremost philosophy of this ranch in everything we do. This is a lie and a direct attack at me. "Staff: well intentioned wranglers but they seem to be in a bit of on vacation mode on the cattle drive." My staff performed admirably. They worked from 7:00am to 8:00pm each and every day. "In some cases they were more interruptive with their high strung horses, and seemingly more interested in adventure than guests." This is just not true. This crew of wranglers are attentive, good, caring, knowledgeable, and advanced riders that have earned a better reputation than what the reviewer is giving them. The reviewer should be ashamed of herself for saying this. "Authenticity: it was pretty staged with cattle in specific areas to be rounded up. Mind you, that probably needs to be done And was fun anyway." The cattle are in separate sections on 7,000 acres in the middle of 50,000 acres. The rancher moves the cattle from section to section so as not to eat all the grass down in a specific area. So yes the cattle are kept in specific areas. This is the way that cattle ranching is done. "Plus several guests seemed more interested in instagram ability of photos than riding" I am at a loss here and really have no comment on this. Did anyone live up to her standards? "Responsiveness: I told them I had no use for a photo cd as I have no cd but would appreciate a drip box access. I received a dvd that promptly went into the trash." I am not sure who the reviewer told about this – it wasn’t management – we could have saved the $3.00 postage.. We do not use a drop box account for this. This is perhaps something we can institute going forward. With that said, we get rave reviews on our CDs. In Summary We have created an authentic cattle drive that emulates the cattle drive the Rancher (whose cows we work) would conduct himself. We have combined several activities that are not usually included in most cattle drives. Our drives include gathering, driving, sorting, roping, branding, tagging, inoculating, and doctoring. All of the activities that any Rancher would have to perform on their herd each year. We could bring trailers to sleep in, a mobile kitchen with a generator to prepare meals, a Butler or two, and people to do all of the riding and work for the guests, and we could pair our wines with our meals.

We worked out our summer vacation around spending a week at the Bar W. Initially I thought that spending just a couple of days at the ranch would be fine (after all, Montana has so much to offer), but after getting additional information from the Bar W, we decided that spending a week would be better and we revised our plans. Such a smart decision. Lots of ranch activities - trail riding, riding lessons, fishing, swimming, biking, square dancing, learning how to rope, cut and pen. You can take part in as much or as little as you want. Meals were homespun and they switched things up daily for dinner from dining by the lake, to by campfire, and even a 'fancy' dinner. What we loved is that our son had so much fun and spent very little time on any electronic gadget. He was up and running from breakfast to well past sunset. We lucked out as there were lots of other kids around his age and we felt safe by allowing him to bike around the resort with his new friends. Everyone on staff was super friendly and helpful. They were there for you and wanted to make sure that you were OK and had a fun time. As an example, on a trail ride, my son was complaining about the sun in his eyes (he had forgotten his sunglasses), one of the wranglers heard this, rode up to him and offered him her pair. Wow! The trail rides are fun and I highly recommend the day-long ride up along the Canadian border. Both novices and expert riders will enjoy their time at the ranch.

Loved every minute of our stay at the Bar W guest Ranch!. The entire crew of wranglers were all "can do" women. The head wrangler was so focused on everyone's safety and well being. The amenities, the horses, the food and all the adventures were the best one can imagine. The beauty of the area was spectacular and all the events were so well planned, organized and overseen with such care. I cannot say enough about the wonderful time spent there. The horses were so well matched to rider's abilities and are so healthy and well cared for.
