I've done two trail rides at the Bar W Guest Ranch this month -- one with a friend and the other with my husband. Both two hour rides were fantastic. I had the same Guides for both; Kaia (sp?) and Deb. Both are very accomplished riders and provided excellent instruction to everyone on the rides. The horses we rode were chosen for us based on our experience and both times I was given horses that I enjoyed riding -- thanks, Daisy & Oscar! The two hour ride really gives a person a chance to get to know their horse AND their guides. I've ridden on a lot of trail rides, but have never had such a great time getting to know my guides. In particular, Deb, who has been in Montana for over 20 years, was outstanding. She made everyone on the rides feel good about their abilities and was always quick with a suggestion and compliment to go along with it. Her ability to build the confidence of all of the riders on the outings was amazing. And, wow, she can handle a horse! I'm lucky I'm a local because I intend to do a lot more riding at the Bar W next year -- and you can bet I'll ask when Deb and Kaia are working so I can ride with them!

Property's Favorite Review
I just stayed at the Bar W Ranch from July 10 to the 16. There aren’t enough words to describe what an incredible place this is. This was the best experience of my entire life. I stayed in glamping tent 1 and slept like a baby every night. I really felt like I was living in the pioneer days, absolutely love how the tents are set up. Waking up every morning, as soon as you open up the tent and seeing the horses grazing in the pasture surrounded by those trees is a sight I will never forget. I absolutely loved sitting on the porch in the morning with my morning coffee, then going over to bond with the horses, then the adorable friendly goats and pigs. That’s a morning routine I’ll never forget. The staff in charge of scheduling the activities Grace and Kelsey did a phenomenal job, they are so skilled at what they do. The trail rides were the best horseback rides I’ve ever done. Make sure you sign up for the swisher lake ride, you drive to this small town called Eureka and from there ride to the Canadian border, the views of the mountains, the forests are spectacular, you really feel like you’re in a true western movie. The most beautiful highlight was stopping for lunch at Lake Koocanusa, a jaw dropping view of the prettiest lake. Joe are trail guide was super kind and made our trip really enjoyable, I really admired how passionate he is in his job. Thank you so much to Kiera, Chloe, Lilly, Austin, Natalie for being such dedicated and genuinely kind hearted wranglers. Participating in the week activities such a roping, axe throwing, white water rafting was super fun. You don’t wanna miss the rodeo either, that was so much fun to watch! I made a lot of really special friends this week and by the end of the week of bonding with each other and sharing these experiences together, we left as family, which is an amazing feeling and it’s all thanks to Bill and Barbara, the owners of this magical place. You guys are truly wonderful people and the kitchen staff work so hard and making the meals, every meal was absolutely amazing. Even though the ranch activities were really fun, the biggest highlight for me was helping out the wranglers after my trail rides with the chores, I absolutely loved brushing the horses, feeding them, releasing them back in the pasture, thank you Austin and Lilly for letting me help out. It was the biggest highlight for me because not only did I wanna help you guys out, I wanted to experience what it’s like working on a ranch, and it’s the happiest job in the world. I really appreciate the hard work you guys do on a daily basis. Lastly thank you to Molly for teaching me how to unsaddle a horse. I truly admire how patient you are, you have a heart of pure gold. So if you are looking for a true authentic dude ranch vacation, I give the Bar W Guest ranch my highest recommendation. It’s an experience I’ll always treasure with my whole heart forever :)

Wanted to see the ranch for possible upcoming stay but visits not allowed…so booked a trail ride instead. Ride was great, wranglers were capable and friendly…vey informative. Ride was nose to tail, as expected, but scenery was great and horses sound. Would highly recommend!

My friends and I are novice riders and were accommodated with horses that were gentle and easy to ride! Kyah and Emily were great at leading us and making sure we were comfortable. They were excellent in explaining the correct way to ride! Definitely recommend!

This beautiful location is just outside Whitefish MT. I was greeted immediately with a warm welcome and conversation. The facility was clean, and kept up. The check-in was a breeze inside a cabin that had merchandise and drinks available. The staff was so friendly and informative. They matched up the perfect horses for your experience. We had a young child, maybe 5, that they (the horse too!) took excellent care of on the ride. The trails were relatively easy for the 2 hour ride I chose. ( I ride all the time for hours on trails so easy for me) I would HIGHLY recommend Bar W to take you out and view the forest in a whole different way!

I agree with a previous review that detailed the complete lack of communication, misinformation and messy sign up process for activities. Additionally the food was pretty bad. Very low quality (maybe a cost cutting measure) and very few options for vegetarians other than a simple salad each day/night. At this price point neither of those things should be a factor. It was well said on a previous review…if advertised as “camp for adults and kids” at a lower price point that would have hit the mark. We would love to return if either the quality or prices change to reflect the offerings. On a positive note… The staff is AMAZING and made our trip. They did their best to make things right for the guests and had awesome, positive attitudes. Jason and Kelsey were two of many that my kids and I absolutely adored during our time. I do hope the new owners are open to the constructive feedback and make some appropriate changes.

I went to the Bar W for a 2 hour 9 am ride and was impressed by the well organized approach and friendly staff. In our group, we had 2 people from the eastern USA who had never ridden before and very much enjoyed it. I had my own horse as a kid until going to University but only rode occasionally since then but enjoyed it a lot. Horses were well trained and the scenery and variety of up and down was great.

I have mixed feelings about this review. The owners are relatively new, and built new cabins for 20 extra people. The normal guest total is around 40, but there were 60 during our week which we think caused a lot of the bumps we encountered. Pro’s: 1. The ranch is beautiful & our cabin was perfect! No AC but never needed it. 2. The staff and the guest are amazing. We’ve made some friends for life here. Jason was amazing! He obviously cares deeply and went out of his way to do everything in his power to make things smoother. Bill (owner) very friendly & hard working. 3. Beautiful views on the rides. Be sure to go to Swisher Lake & Lake Koocanusa, as it’s absolutely amazing. 4. The night on the ridge is fun, line dancing is great- even for beginners. 5. Barrel racing & team penning are fun!!! Cons. 1. Big big issue: Excursions” include: All Horseback riding, lessons, barrel racing, team penning, trail riding, and non equine activities such as white water rafting, skeet shooting, archery and kids activities have to be signed up for on the first Monday after you arrive on Sunday. Communication failure big time. This was very confusing & non orderly and some people never got to do all the things we were told were all included due to space limits of 8-10 per most rides & activities. We were chastised by the female owner even though we had been told previously we’d be assigned to one horse all week, so we didn’t understand why we couldn’t ride everyday. Again most likely due to overbooking from 40-60. 2. The food was mediocre. They had plenty of food, but it was spaghetti, hamburgers, salad, something that was supposed to be beef stroganoff and Mexican twice. We did have ribs one night (I ate in town so I can’t speak to those) and flank steak one night and it was over cooked & chewy. I am not that picky, but at the price we paid for this ranch the food should have been higher quality. It’s not the chefs fault, but appeared trying to “pinch pennies”. Wrap up: If they advertised this as “camp for adults & kids” at a lower price point, it would have been exactly as expected. We had a blast in spite of the crazy sign ups and so so food. The horses were all healthy & well behaved. There is nothing like a night time Montana sky where you can see the Milky Way & shooting stars. Again the staff (Every staff member we encountered) were polite & kind and did all they could to help make the stay great.

My wife, an avid horse rider and lover of everything horses booked a time to ride on a Sunday. Late that night she came down with a severe migraine and sadly called to cancel. Not only would they not refund, they said if she rebooked she would to pay, AGAIN. What a joke. Then these deadbeats, so out of touch, SEND us an email to review her experience. CLUELESS and out of touch with reality. Save your money, go elsewhere. They won't be in business long with this attitude.

We like to ride horses on vacation that we may experience scenery we might not otherwise have access to. In the past, outfitters have taken time to be friendly, introduce themselves and make us feel welcome. The gals we had today were poker-faced and not the slightest bit interested in any of the guests on the ride. We plodded silently along power lines and saw-cut forest, no views of anything but the horse in front of you (and its dust). We have ridden this summer with outfits affiliated with the NPS (in Bryce and Grand Canyon) as well as ridden in the Targhee National Forest (ID) with a private outfitter. All three of these businesses took much greater care to ensure the ride was fun, and to share tidbits about the area and a little about themselves as well. The hack line horses at Bar W were fine, the whole ride was done at a walk so there were no real problems. Just a ho hum experience and definitely NOT worth the time or expense of our trip from Glacier.
