We are a family-oriented guest ranch with guests of all ages enjoying time with their friends, new and old, without sacrificing the very special feeling of closely shared family time. Guests, about forty each week, typically arrive and depart on Sundays throughout the summer. We prefer a one week minimum, and encourage longer stays whenever possible to gain the most from your ranch experience. The Elkhorn is well-known for delicious meals and private, comfortable western cabin accommodations. In addition to a variety of full or half days on horseback for riders of all abilities, blue ribbon fishing streams, whitewater rafting, hiking and the wonders of Yellowstone Park are at our gate. With our unique location and a history of western hospitality, the ranch is the ideal destination for family vacations and reunions as well as for horseback riders of all abilities, hikers, fly-fishermen, photographers and artists - in fact anyone wanting to experience nature in an unspoiled setting.

We recently went on a sleigh ride dinner at elk horn. Due to a traffic accident blocking 191 after our sleigh ride dinner, we were not able to return to our home near Rainbow Ranch. Our group consisted of 15 people, five of them under the age of 5!? With temperatures well below zero, and no place to go, Michael, Addison, and Paul took us in to the dining cabin again and provided us with everything we needed to be comfortable and care for the little kids. From sleeping bags to food/drink to cushions on the floor for babies to sleep, there was no end to their kindness and caring. They truly “went above and beyond”! This all after they had to wait for us to BEGIN the sleigh ride, when one of our family member and family slid off the road in his vehicle en route to the Elkhorn!!?? They served us with a smile and a delicious dinner!! This level of character and consideration is difficult to find in these times. The Elkhorn is fortunate to have these fine people as employees! This place is incredible and absolutely worth checking out!

At the risk of sounding over the top, the Elkhorn is just awesome—and the word awesome is way overused. The scenery is unmatched, wildlife everywhere, and a terrific, fun, caring staff. We loved the meals with other guests and staff, prepared by an incredible chef. Half day and day long rides through the canyon and up to Sunshine Point, which looks down on the ranch from the east. You can borrow boots, hats, rain slickers, and whatever you need. The beauty of the Elkhorn is that it is an old school, down home experience—not a corporate, country club, manicured environment. In 2022 they’ll celebrate 100 years. So many ties to across multiple generations of guests and staff. Montana legit and unforgettable. Just go.

My three-generation family stayed at Elkhorn Ranch for a week this summer. It was brilliant. My 12-year old daughter hugged me and let me hug her back. My ten-year old son made friends with the young horses. My 75-year old mother discovered she loves horseback riding, and my father, not a rider, was well taken care of by the staff while the rest of us were off exploring. To say the Elkhorn is special doesn’t capture the magic of the place. Elkhorn is a relaxed, friendly (crazy friendly), horsey ranch. It is rustic- no spa, barely cell service, the cabins are comfy and cozy but not fancy. Meals are delicious and served, at least during COVID, buffet-style. The focus is on the community of guests and staff, riding, and the beauty of Gallatin National Forest which more or less surrounds the ranch. The riding program is top notch and they really know how to turn a group of random kids into friends in under an hour. Grownups, too, for that matter. Watching my kids, in cowboy boots and hats, ride off with a wrangler and come home tired and happy at the end of the day was the best. I cannot express how grateful we are to the Elkhorn for the experience we had. It is obvious why it is thriving still after 100 years.

The Elkhorn Ranch is an authentic ranch with wranglers that take the horses to graze in the early evening and bring them back in the morning right past your cabin. You stay in log cabins built in the 1920’s with electricity and running water. The head wrangler matches a horse to your personality and experience and does an excellent job. We both had perfect horses! We went horseback riding on trails with beautiful views. The chef prepared amazing meals each day. We enjoyed every minute of our time spent on the ranch! If you want to spend a week riding horses with knowledgeable wranglers, this is the place for you!

A much belated review for our amazing stay in July 2019. This place is a GEM. We are a family of 4 with two teen boys and minimal prior horseback riding experience. We wanted to truly get a Montana experience for our first trip to Yellowstone. They were amazing at making us all feel comfortable and the other families (most of whom had been coming for years) eagerly welcomed us into the group. The teens bonded playing horseshoe and in the rec cabin with pingpong and games, the adults bonded over meals, rides, and wine :). Cabins are really cute and cozy. The rides are jaw dropping and we learned so much over the week, got to see the beauty of yellowstone and even a mama and baby moose on the trail. Food was incredibly delicious and plentiful! We also whitewater rafted one afternoon nearby, and did some fly fishing in their beautiful river. Great fishing tips from some of the ranch hands and they have rods on site. We had prepped our kids for a phone-free vacation (one of the selling points to me) but the teens there had all figured out how to access the wifi near the dining room meant for the employees. So our kids were annoyed to be the only ones without phones. My ONLY suggestion would be to have all buy into the idea of a non-connected vacation and have a box or ceremony for all phones (or at least kid phones) the first night and put a password on the employee wifi? But maybe we're alone in fighting this fight. There is an office that adults could step into for connection/computer work if needed.

It's ALL GREAT...staff, food, scenery, accommodations, horses, guides...thanks to Linda, Gail, Michael (chef), Jim, Dave, Bailey, Joseph, Maria and others whose names I have lost. We arrived on Father's Day and my kids arranged with Linda and Gail some gifts which I greatly appreciated. All 3 meal/day were outstanding. We did 2 rides/day, morning and afternoon. One day the staff cooked "on the trail" and that was amazingly wonderful. Weather was fine upon arrival and had SNOW the first day of summer, June 21 and June 22 as well. Heat in the cabins is provided by a wood burning stove and is more then enough to keep warm. Wood is provided as needed and Bailey and or Joseph starts your fire in the morning so that it's nice and toasty when you wake up. Elkhorn makes everyone feel "SPECIAL". I wish I had discovered Elkhorn earlier in my life. We surely will be back and probably later in the season, September, just to see how different it might be, weatherwise, that is, cause I know the current staff will be just as good then as when we experienced in June 2019. Horses are neat animals, so smart yet so gentle. Horses grazed in front of our cabin and when they left the corral they sped right past our cabin towards the upper pasture. Truly a sight to see. Thank you Elkhorn Ranch and the ENTIRE STAFF. Liz and I will be back for sure.

This was our fourth visit to the Elkhorn Ranch, and it gets better everytime. Linda, the manager, has grown up in the area, knows the ranch and the lands around it, and holds a wealth of knowledge on the natural environment - she's the one who will know what that flower is that's blooming in the high meadows. She's witty and wise and takes great care of the guests. Our experiences with the horses was fantastic - they have a large stable of nearly 100 horses to meet all the experience levels of riders, and the wranglers know all the horses by name. Watching the horses come in each morning and out again in the evening is an event not to be missed. They are expanding their hiking options for those who wish to keep their feet on the ground, and the same trails used by the horses also convey hikers to distant meadows. Fishing opportunities abound, from as close as the front gate on the Gallatin River to the park or other locales nearby. Licenses can be had through the office. Saving the best for last - the food is incomparable. All meals are prepared from scratch, and the portions are hearty to keep you going in the mountain environment. The staff in the dining hall are friendly, responsive, and adaptable to guest needs and wishes. Our stay couldn't have been better!

This trip was a 50th Birthday present from my husband and did not disappoint. There is so much to stay its hard to know where to start but just to set the scene, I am a horse lover who has always wanted to ride out western style in beautiful countryside. My husband has limited horse back riding experience and our ten year old daughter is not a huge horse fan however both of them entered into the experience whole-heartedly. The experienced foreman matched us all up with great well cared for horses and we were taken on a huge variety of rides to suit our experience, stamina and interests. The wranglers escorting us were knowledgable, personable and good fun. Our daughter had the time of her life. She loved the horse they chose for her and especially the 'Peanut Butter moms' who took care of the kids during the day, escorting them on rides and planning craft activities etc. After breakfast we barely saw her until dinner time and though we could and did ride together as a family, she actually preferred not to ride with us!!! We really valued the independence that she was able to have from us in a such a free, yet safe environment. The break from most things technology was also invaluable. We loved the team at the ranch (warm, flexible, helpful, caring) and the great guests we met there; many of whom return year after year. Having been there we now know why. The food was great and the balance between organized activities and chill time was just right. At the end of our vacation our daughter asked if she could stay another week, and basically spent the three days afterwards when we went to Yellowstone National Park asking if she could go back to the ranch!!! And as for me - well I cried when I arrived and cried when I left. BEST HOLIDAY EVER!. Thank you, Thank you Elkhorn Ranch - we will be back!

Fantastic setting, great people and guests and wonderful horses and cabins. Great place to get away from it all. Food was amazing and Linda and the team were brilliant with looking after different riders skill levels for the daily rides. We will be back!
