I recently stayed at the Chinook Motor Inn, and have been a fairly regular customer at the motel when travelling in North Central Montana. I was in Chinook on a Sunday night, and I wasn't aware that the restaurant closes at 8:00 pm on Sundays. The restaurant's closing time is important because it is the only restaurant in Chinook. I entered the restaurant at 7:45 and was promptly informed that it was closed, even though the posted closing time is 8:00 pm. The wait person refused to serve me. She said that the cook likes to leave early on Sundays and wouldn't take a "last minute" order. The only other place to get food in Chinook on a Sunday night is from a gas station that has junk food available under lights. I was shocked that they wouldn't serve a guest during their posted hours. There was also a plumbing problem in the hotel on this visit. A pipe was leaking in the hallway and plumbers were working on it for 3 of the 4 days that I was in Chinook. There were ladders in the hallway and buckets under the leaky pipe. The motel room had a musty smell to it, but it was clean. There was no hot water one of the mornings while I was there on this trip. To be fair, I have to admit that staff on previous visits have been friendly, and in the past there haven't been any plumbing problems.

I wanted to like this place but too many things went wrong. The proprietor was friendly and had a nice selection of local beers in his small bar. A couple of beers and off to bed. To be fair the room was clean and while there was some wear it was acceptable. The problem came in with midnite and Friday the 13th. NOISE! Some of the noise could not be helped. The motel is across the street from a railroad and couple of trains ran very late and early. There was a hell of thunder storm most of the night and into the morning. Around 3 or 4 some drunks noisily came to their room and were smoking and rattling around for a while. I was too sleepy to do anything about it. Just as I was finally getting to sleep it seemed the maid knocked on my door and opened it even though there was the privacy sign on the doorknob. 1st rule of housekeeping do not disturb means STAY OUT!

To add to the poor experience the shower, which had recently been remodeled, did not work. The valve had the feel of an internal disconnect and would not flow any water. It was not a name brand valve and felt like it would break off in my hand.

When I informed the clerk at checkout about all of this she would not do anything about the bill which was nearly 80 bucks. The clerk claimed that she could not do anything about the bill. While that may be true in this case it is not true for other motels and hotels. I informed her that I would be making my report on TA and it would not be good. The only good thing about this stay is that I was on the road by 8:30 AM and wide awake. I think I would have slept better in my car. I do not think the proprietor will be very happy with his employees.

Very rude staff/owner! We stayed here one night, never again. The hotel is older and really could use a make over, beds weren't very comfortable, there were 2 flat pillows on each bed, we asked for 2 extra pillows and where told it would be $20.00. Mold on the bathroom ceiling, no fan in the bathroom so when you took a shower it was like being in a sauna. Stained washes clothes, towels and bedding. Room wasn't extremely dirty but could have been cleaner. No coffee maker or microwave in the room. Each floor shared one microwave at the end of the hall and only one coffee station for the whole hotel with limited supplies. They do have a restaurant but it wasn't that great either. We've eaten there before and it wasn't bad this time it was awful. Since there are only 2 hotel/motels in Chinook ya don't have much choice

This motel has gone way downhill since my prior visit. My room and my son's room, both on the first floor smelled musty,
the carpeting was torn and badly soiled throughout and the place appeared shabby. Far different than two years ago.

This is a great hotel in a region with very little choices. Yes, it's a older hotel, but in excellent condition, there are no "smells" like I usually find at older hotels. Yes, it's also near a train track, somehow that doesn't seem to bother me and I'm a light sleeper. If you think it might bother you, ask for a room closest to the front desk (farthest away from the tracks). The rooms are very clean and have a nice lay out. This hotel is also a full service hotel, they have a great restaurant and also a lounge, All the hotel staff have been excellent to cater to my needs, from the housekeepers to the innkeepers. Absolutely no complaints, if traveling through from Havre to Malta, it's the only place to stay, I would definitely pick it over any hotels in Malta.

I get Chinook, MT is very small, but the owners don't seem to think updating the hotel is worth it.

Everything in the hotel is from the 80s when apparently they purchased the place. The bed is hard and squeaks when you move upon it. The TV was outdated and the speakers were blown out on it.

If you must stay over in the area, there really is no other option, so grinning and baring it is all you can do. But I don't recommend this place if you don't have to stay over in this town.

The son of the family that owns this place is rude, unapproachable and unsociable. It seems even he would rather not be there either.

Best of luck in small town Chinook, MT

My family stayed there and one of the owners accused us of stealing a towel and we told them they could check all our bags for it and they wouldn't, they said ok. Then after we checked out at 11am, that evening after we left they charged us $30 without calling or telling us, we assume it was for the so called missing towel. They said there were 3 towels and we only had two large towels. This is ridiculous and uncalled for basically accusing us of stealing! We will never stay there again and will tell everyone we know of our experience with them, we have a lot of friends and family. Your better off staying in Havre if your in the area, better hotels and much better service and better prices.

Went here for lunch, food... Mediocre! Cost... Rediculous for a Chinese lunch! Two entrees, appetizer (which is normally included in Chinese lunch specials)and two drinks. $35 before tip.. Ugh
Also not included, but normally is, especially at lunch.. Soup and hot tea. BTW.. $3.00 extra for fried rice instead of steamed.. What could they possibly put into fried rice to make a scoop cost an extra $3 bucks? Oh, and they don't have Chinese hot mustard either. I've had a lot better, a lot cheaper and a lot more bountiful any where else I've ever been... How about you?

This hotel does need some updating. But it was very clean and we thought the bed was comfortable. We brought our own pillows because I had read theirs weren't good. It was actually pretty quiet too, didn't hear the trains all night. It was also a good price. Hopefully they'll do some updating soon!
