Hands down the most luxurious hotel in Billings. Boutique hotel part of Preferred Hotels. Boutique toiletries and linens. Features a lovely restaurant and unique retro diner for breakfast. Every part of the hotel feels very classy. Even though the rooms are on the small side, they are well designed and everything is focused on comfort. Being a boutique hotel, the customer service is the focus here, and you won't find any other hotel in Billings that cares as much about their guests as the Northern. Other highlights include the cozy fire-warmed lobby and a TERRIFIC gym. It's not ultra luxury but that doesn't really exist in Montana outside of Bozeman and Big Sky. Simply put, this is a wonderful and intimate luxury boutique hotel!
The Northern has an excellent location in the centre of downtown Billings (as does the neighbouring Doubletree). Free parking in the lot next door is a plus and although the down town is walkable, a rented car is key for seeing the area around Billings. The hotel is nice and has a diner, a bar and a well stocked small gift and convenience store on the ground floor. Oddly there are no full length mirrors anywhere - which is a problem if you’re getting dressed for an event as we were. While we were there, some kind of plumbing malfunction led to a very noticeable sewage smell in the lobby and second floor event area. The front desk staff were mostly unhelpful and unfriendly - from reservations to check in to malfunctioning keycards to requests for restaurant recommendations. In contrast, the staff on the front door were all welcoming and ready to assist.…
I booked this hotel because it was so close to the Alberta Bair, but I loved everything about it. The room was clean, safe, and comfortable. The lobby was gorgeous. What really stood out through was just how nice and helpful everyone was from the valet parking guys who deserve an honorable mention to the gift shop personnel and the housekeeper. The front desk even remembered I asked about the theatre when I checked out and asked me about the show. I felt like I was so welcome there. I wouldn't change a thing.
The Northern is, by their own admission, largely populated by business folk. Our room was fine, the bed comfy and it was clean. Breakfast in the diner downstairs was minus its griddle, so limited and variable due to staff shortages. When we tried to ask for a taxi, the girl at reception was too busy and after making a bit of a fuss to a guy in a suit (George) , he not only called us a taxi, then sent it away (when it was a rattletrap) and drove us himself!! Step forward George, part owner of the hotel. He was so kind. Thank you. Dinner in Ten, their restaurant was quirkily served but as a former chef, I can tell you that my wife and I had the two best steaks of our lives; and we come from a beef area in the U.K. We met a nice guy from Texas who reckoned the Northern was the best in town. Well, if it were all down to George and not post Covid staffing difficulties and a few minor quirks, I’m sure he was probably right.…
Have stayed in this property in the past. No complaints. Connecting rooms, as requested, were clean, not luxurious, one bathroom. Restaurant was convenient and decent. GM was kind enough when asked for some take out cups for tea, brought us cups, tea and fixings. Very considerate.
We booked a room for 4 people (2 adults and 2 children ) through what we thought was the hotel sight ( northern booking). When we arrived after a 7 h drive we have been told that the room can accommodate only one extra bed and if we want a room with 2 Quines beds we should pay an extra 100 $. Needles to say that the same Quine bed in the site was only about 30 extra$, and similar rated hotels room in the area where much cheaper. Our booking was made the same day we arrived I really don’t know how they wanted to accommodate 4 people in a room with just one Quine bed. The additional bed they brought to our room was small and not comfortable at all!!! We are traveling in the northwest for 2 weeks now and it’s the first time we got such a disappointing room with such a disappointing approach. We arrived at the hotel at 7 pm I don’t think that someone will take the 2 Quine beds today and asking from us 100$ extra for a room we have paid 300$ is a rubbery .…
A premium price is charged for a property that is in dire need of updating . The initial impression when walking into the lobby was from old and worn furniture. The room was worse. The thermostat, according to a Staff member “is a lie”. There is no fan adjustment on the thermostat but It shows there is one . The temperature control also did not work. The power outlet by the bed was not functioning. There were no amenities in the room , such as a coffee pot. We enjoy staying at old , historic hotels , however this was just an old ran down hotel. It certainly wasn’t worth the fee.
While my wife was admitted into the Billings Clinic recently, the People at the Northern offered me a stay there for a very inexpensive “Hospital Rate”! I had stayed at this great old hotel for many many years before it was remodeled, but not since!! I was very pleasantly surprised at what “they have done” to this Grand Old Hotel!!? The desk people )especially one nice lady who was very genuine, (so sorry I don’t remember her name), was especially concerned about -how my wife was doing, each day I returned to stay! They “Stood Behind Their Special Rate” for as long as I stayed!! The Hilton place up the street DID NOT!! After a couple of nights at THEIR “Hospital Rate” they “reneged “, and tried to charge NEARLY DOUBLE!! Thank You Northern Hotel!!
This hotel is in the center of billings and it did not disappoint us from beginning to end. The lobby is beautiful, the front desk staff nice and fast. The hotel room was very clean and modern. The bed absolutely comfortable and big. Get breakfast at their place (Bernies diner), it will not disappoint you. This was one of the best hotels we stayed in in the US and this for a very affordable price (mind you, on the eastcoast you pay 50% more just to stay in an Inn or Motel). Whenever we come back to Billings we will definitely stay here!
Excellent service Two restaurants I recommend this hotel for the wonderful hospitality , cleanliness , location and spacious rooms . Conveniently located walking distance to the science museum , shops , airport . We really enjoyed being at the hotel with our children and grandchildren. Room service is a super plus .
