#74 of 137 hotels in Saint Louis
The Missouri Athletic Club Downtown, is a unique, yet classic fixture of St. Louis' historic Washington Avenue since 1904. Original mahogany wood, rich leather, and lavish hand carved detailing, lay the ambiance of this one of a kind experience. Both the Jack Buck Grill and Sportman's Club, each house their own bar atmosphere, and are known across Missouri as the best in the business for top-notch American cuisine from Chef Barton Phillips. One of the sole remaining establishments in St. Louis where cigars can both be purchased and enjoyed in traditional luxury club atmosphere, the experience is one-of-a-kind, the Art Gallery on the Lobby level is breathtaking, and the facilities are extensive to say the least. Best of all, you don't have to be a member to stay overnight in one of our 74 guest rooms and suites, and take advantage of our prime downtown location! Within walking distance to Busch Stadium, the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis Gateway Arch, and the banks of the Mississippi River, and easily accessible to several major highways and St. Louis' own Metro Link commuter system.

From the moment we walked in to the lobby, we said “what is this? - and do they allow women to stay here?” Well, yes they do, but it is defiantly a throw back to a masculine period of dark wood, stuffed animal heads and cigars - as well as an unusual smell that was either cigar, or athletic, or both. We visited on a Sunday. Everything was closed. All amenities, whatever they normally are, were not available. Our room was not available until 3:30 - yet we only saw 2 other guests while we were there. Maybe on another day it is a hustle and bustle kind of place - but not on Sunday. It was so dead that we actually looked it up on several registries to see if it was haunted. Well - because it was “dead” and because the bathroom mirror looked like it had a secret message written in the cracks, and the kids thought the hallways looked like The Shining was filmed there. It is not officially ( check The Drury across the street ) but it may be easier and cheaper to convert the pitch to “haunted” than to update the hotel. The room was relatively large and the staff was relatively nice. We thought it was interesting that housekeeping was anxious to get in the room (7:45 am knock) considering we waited for a room well into the afternoon the day before. The beds were hard and the pillows were too high for my taste. The in room coffee was passable. The old pictures in the halls were interesting. The hotel is located hear the interstate, near the river, near the convention center - but otherwise sort of on the edge of downtown. With just an afternoon to kick around, there was not much within walking distance. Now, the lack of amenities and the need of an update is effectively reflected in the price. So, if you just need a bed for a night, or you really want to feel the luxury of a 1920’s men’s club, or if you want to freak your kids out by telling them they are staying in a haunted hotel, the Missouri Athletic Club serves that niche market.

Fantastic place! Unique, elegant, convenient, reasonable. It was a great surprise! The rooms were very comfortable and the restaurant was great. Check in was seamless and when we had wait 10 minutes, they gave us a voucher for breakfast.

Spent two nights here with our friends on Route 66. Felt odd on checking in as the annual club elections were on and we were very under-dressed but we were made to feel welcome by the staff. Great dining, good rooms and a feeling of a bygone age. Special mention to Henry - his tips on St Louis were fabulous, as was his dedication to us as visitors to the club. A great find on the centre of town!

Beautiful building with history. Rooms are clean and tidy with beautiful decor to match the era. Bathrooms in serious need of an update. However, they do the job. There is no way to regulate toom temperature except from a fan or opening the windows. The windows lead onto the st so it's rather noise and the fan moves around already hot air. Weird rules for the lobby and always felt undressed nd judges walking through. She was an alright hotel but not super great.

Enjoyed our stay there. It only has 72 rooms so it isn't overly crowded. Two room suites that are furnished nicely. The building is old but has been renovated nicely. The restaurant was really good we enjoyed our meal. Walking distance to the Arch and Cardinals games etc.
