After years of driving past, I finally got to spend a night here. The décor inside has a lot of small details that really complete the feeling of an old English inn. There is a small pool that was totally packed and there isn't too much within walking distance, but the room was clean and there was a smooth check in/check out procedure.
No toilet paper in common areas, no staff at desk. Our room was filthy and again, no staff. When staff was present they were grumpy and unhelpful. No response from management. I get this is a pandemic but really?
This hotel is one of the most interesting and fun hotels I have ever stayed at! The decor is an enjoyable journey through the highlights of England! But first I want to concentrate my review on the staff...I was traveling from Colorado to North Carolina with extreme Covid safety concerns. I spoke to Freddy on the phone from Colorado, and he helped book me a room that would not be used 24 hours prior. He was SO helpful, and very kind about my concerns. I arrived quite late, and had a lot of luggage that I had to bring in- I also had to get up extremely early the next morning to leave. The parking lot was packed, but Freddy was still there, and moved his car from his spot close to the front so I could have a safe and quick exit in the morning. He could not have been more helpful. It is a person like Freddy who makes a hotel special, because they take the extra steps. So, thank you, Freddy! As for the hotel, the outside is like walking through a town in the UK, and when you enter, there is one of the famous red phone booths, but it is an ATM! The decor is such fun. I love Tudor England and my hallway had paintings of Henry VIII and all his wives! There were nods to famous English artists and royalty everywhere. My room was extremely spacious with a chaise lounge in addition to the very comfortable King bed. I couldn't figure out how to turn off the lights in the bathroom (which has never happened to me!) but I read in another review the switch was behind the towels- so I know for next time! I sleep in a sleep mask, so it was no issue for me. As for the reviews about the age or cleanliness of the hotel, my room was clean. Some might find the hotel is a bit dated, but it's MEANT to be an English style manor...it's whole decor speaks to an older style. So, I found it charming and absolutely unique- not dated. I have to drive through St. Louis again in December with my family, and I can't wait stay there again and introduce them to this amusing hotel!…
I got the 'JRR Tolkien' room. Well maintained, nice bed and bedding, everything worked. Nice place if the location suits you (next to WUSTU, not downtown). Don't try to go to the garage if anything taller than a 6'6" van vits.
My first impression was a grumpy front desk person. Beyond that, everything was fine. I liked my room and I was happy with the breakfast bar. However, I was never able to figure out what actually set the lights on or off in the bathroom. One of the better stays on my road trip. Cool concept.
