I stayed one night on a quick trip through St. Louis and would have changed hotels had I not arrived so late in the evening. This place is DIRTY. My bed linens were clean, but there was some yucky white stuff on the fabric headboard. The room smelled musty. There were spatters on the bathroom walls and smears on the glass of my bedside tables. I accidentally dropped something behind the bathroom vanity and was horrified by the thick layer of dust and hair. The elevator buttons and door handles were smudged and sticky, and the floor in the breakfast area had not been swept/mopped. The hotel concept and decor are charming and cozy, and the staff were all very kind and friendly. Late night snack and drink at Fox and Hounds was tasty and the ambiance was great. The complimentary breakfast selection was really good. Some of the common lounge areas were also clean and comfortable. Overall, though, I would avoid staying here until the cleanliness issue is adequately addressed. …
This hotel is unique with it's old english decor, but that is where the charm ends. The facility is dirty, in poor repair, no housekeeping services during stay, often out of clean wash clothes. The staff provides excuses instead of service.
Charming hotel and great location in St. Louis. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. When we got to our room, the window was broken and partially open. When we called the main desk, the staff member immediately offered to move us and we unexpectedly got a room upgrade. The complimentary breakfast has a great variety of foods for all pallets. I would highly recommend staying here.
One of the dirtiest hotels we’ve ever stayed at When we showed up early to get into the room they said sorry we’re still cleaning and it wouldn’t be available till 3 o’clock So we come back 2 hours later at 3:15pm and checked in. We walk down the hallway and noticed trash laying on the floor. We got into the bedroom noticed that there were stuff splattered on the baseboards. The toilet had urine stains on underneath and near the floor. The room had many spots that have not been dusted. There was some disgusting gunk behind faucet on the sink. No Kleenex. There was trash laying on the floor the only thing that seems somewhat clean was the bed, except there was hairs on the pillows We will never never never visit this property again We should have just left but we had been hiking the past two days and to tired. The whole property seem really run down…
If you're in St. Louis, this is the place to stay. The Cheshire is a British-themed boutique hotel that makes you feel as if you've arrived across the pond as you step through the entrance. The entire place is designed and furnished as merry ol' England-stone, massive fireplace, artwork all contribute to the feel. Each room is themed and named for an author or poet and their works are in the room (and you get the appropriate book mark on check in!!). Very comfortable, extremely clean, ultimately cosy and welcoming. Then there is the staff. From front desk check in to personnel in the process of various duties to the housekeeping staff to check out, each one took the time to converse with us. They truly conveyed their dedication and pride in "their" hotel. We didn't visit the British pub (although we peeked in) but did eat at Basso, the Italian gastro pub on the premises. Excellent staff with terrific recommendations, friendly and welcoming, excellent food! You won't regret staying at the Cheshire!…
Maybe we can blame Covid. Check in at midnight took way too long; the desk agent was busy delivering towels to a guest. Our room had no heat. I called and they were supposed to fixit in 5 minutes. 20 minutes later the heat was turned on. While it was nice to have heat, the noise sounded like a freight train coming through. Plus one other benefit, when the heat came on the bathroom light automatically turned on. All night long. Mold in the shower and on the shower curtain. A carpeted area behind a heavy chair had not been dusted for a couple years. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln.
I'm not a big fan of tudor architecture, but I kind of loved the Cheshire. It does not wear its English theme lightly--lots of dark, ornate wood, heavy fabrics, etc. Every room is named after an English luminary, from Renaissance-era authors to 20th-century icons. There's also a giant taxidermied Kodiak bear in the lobby. Not sure how that relates to the old English thing, but there it is. Best things about our stay: very friendly, helpful staff; a lovely flagstone patio with morning sun; and the best free hotel breakfast I can remember. So much fresh fruit, gorgeous pastries, good coffee, and great scrambled eggs. I would happily set aside my preference for minimalism and stay at the Cheshire again.
A unique hotel experience central to most things St Louis. We were visiting for a Friday-Tuesday stay from KC to do a little “spring break” trip. Booked The Cheshire via a third party site and chose it in large part due to its location, no more than maybe 10 minutes any direction to everything we intended to do and more so, right across the street from the southwest corner of Forest Park. The hotel’s theme is carried through and through, no thinly veiled facades. This provided all the more entertainment with a toddler, to walk the halls and explore a bit. Single king bed room. Spacious enough for a basic room. The bed is quite comfortable, just the right amount of firm with a little cushy give. Pillows were (all) about too soft. Bathroom is snug but fairly well updated and nicely finished. Continental breakfast is a nice spread; good variety of pastries, fruits, yogurt and a well stocked fridge, and a daily rotation of eggs, breakfast meats and such. Both restaurants (one off the lobby and another on property) are highly reviewed on the major sites, though we didn’t try due to our particular plans. Starbucks also on the property, just across the parking lot. Negatives - the bed frame leaves something to be desired. Squared off “posts” at the end corners are low (below the top of the mattress) and quite the hazard for shins. Ask me how we know… Windows, while gorgeous, are single pain. Meaning drafty. Bedroom door doesn’t have any sort of safety latch, which meant (among other things) our toddler figured out how to open it and get halfway down the hall with that toddler-type of quick. Repeatedly. Some of the not-antique styled finishes show some wear around the edges, and the TV remote is probably 10 years old and only half functioning. But those last two are just being picky. Staff were all very friendly and inviting, and having us feel like our son was becoming a staple of the hotel from his regular strolls (accompanied) through the lobby halls, especially for breakfast. We’ll absolutely consider The Cheshire for any future trips to STL.…
The Cheshire Hotel is a quirky place. You might find that charming, depending on your perspective and purpose of your trip. This is an older property that has received some updates and seems clean, but it is a bit battered. Don’t come here looking for shiny new bathroom appliances or sleek surfaces. Everything is done in an old English theme, with the rooms named after English authors and displays of armor and swords in public areas. There is even a giant stuffed bear in the lobby, for some reason. There are not many seats in the breakfast area, but we found an open table and enjoyed ourselves. The pub is small and was crowded on a weekend evening, and it certainly offers more charm than the typical hotel bar. There is a charge for parking, which I did not see on the website in advance. It was not a huge problem for us, but good to know in advance. The Cheshire is a fun place to stay for a night or two if you are seeking an out-of-the ordinary hotel in the middle of the city. It is a little odd in a charming way. It’s probably not the best choice for a longer stay, or for a business trip. Everything is thoroughly used and not terribly modern. We enjoyed ourselves and would stay here again.…
We were greeted as if we were an inconvenience and given a room with a view of the roof, vents and HAVC units. The smoke alarm went off while my husband was in the shower. I got a call from the front desk accusing us of smoking. This used to be one of my favorite hotels and I’m sad to think we won’t be back.
