Sumptuous Victorian Mansion that pulls out all the stops. Impressive and jaw-dropping architecture. Service by Inn owner, Isobel, will have you spoiled. Warm and inviting, I cannot recommend it more highly.

The Shakespeare Chateau is one of a kind! Besides the fact that it is a gorgeous place, the service was fantastic, and the accommodations were lovely, comfortable, and clean. We didn't want to leave, and we WILL return!

The Shakespeare B&B is spectacular! The owner is committed & skilled preservationist, & all the work that was done to restore this palatial home is stunning. And she has a very skilled general contractor. The front porch is “eye-candy up close”, & the view across the street to the red Harvey Ellis mansion is a joy. Isobel made us feel... More

Isobel made sure our stay was comfortable and cozy. The breakfast was delicious, and the house itself was indescribable. The chateau is a Gilded Age mansion in St Joseph MO, and is lovingly restored. Its like living in a history lesson on the 1890's. Want to experience how the elites of that era lived (with the advantages of modern bathrooms,... More

Just visited for the third time and it is truly the best B&B we have stayed at...anywhere, and we travel a lot all over the world. I am a big fan of B&Bs and small Inns when I travel. Thanks to a local friend, whose family used to own the home, I stayed at the Shakespeare Chateau for two nights when I was back home last weekend for my high school reunion. It is by far one of the best B&Bs I have stayed in across... More

This is hands down the cleanest B&B that we have ever visited. Isobel is a wonderful hostess and a great tour guide. The variety of wood and woodwork in this house is unique. The stained glass examples are excellent and are a good singular reason to tour this house. As a B&B it is well modernized. The breakfast is really... More

We spent two wonderful nights in this B&B. It was charming, beautiful, and very comfortable. The rooms and common areas are exquisitely furnished (a stunning and faithful restoration to the original vision of the home -- it is without exaggeration when I say that this B&B looked better than many museums we have visited) and full of every modern amenity... This B&B is simply beautiful. Named for the carving of William Shakespeare over the foyer mantle, each of the public rooms is aesthetically pleasing, and have been meticulously restored. The stained glass, wall finishes, tiles, parquet floors, just so many fabulous architectural details make this a destination in itself. The artwork is wonderful. A thoughtful attention to detail plus a... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The majestic Shakespeare Chateau was built in 1885 by Nathan Ogden when St. Joseph Missouri was known as "The Queen of the River Cities." High atop a bluff looking down across the city toward the Missouri River, 809 Hall Street is one of several mansions in the Hall Street Historic District known locally as "Millionaires' Row." You'll enjoy meeting the friendly innkeeper, Isobel, as she takes you through the palatial interior. You'll marvel at 47 (yes, 47!) Original stained glass windows, carved cherrywood, mahogany, and walnut mantles, and of course, a bust of the Bard himself above the grand fireplace in the front foyer. But most of all, you'll enjoy our comfortable sleeping rooms, each one beautifully appointed with fabulous art and antiques and luxurious linens. ... more   less
