We enjoyed our night stay here in celebration of our 40 year anniversary. Isobel was very hospitable and we felt right at home. The Chateau has been lovingly restored with no skimping on the details. A great plus was the knowledge she has of its history. It was a very pleasant stay, in a comfortable room, with an enjoyable breakfast.... More

Our night at the Shakespeare Chateau was a highlight of our short road trip with friends to St. Joseph. Isabel, the owner, generously shared her story about the history and extensive renovation of this magnificent mansion. Our breakfast, everything homemade, was delightful... hamlet soufflé, fresh fruit, scones and lemon curd. However, if you have mobility issues, this may not be... More

We stayed here three nights at Thanksgiving. The room was large and comfortable. There was a fireplace and hot tub. The breakfasts were delicious. Isobel, the owner and manager, was a great host. She had interesting information about the mansion and also how she went about remodeling it. We had a tour of the mansion with Isobel, who was very... More

My husband and I have started a tradition of celebrating our anniversary with a quick getaway that includes staying in a historic bed and breakfast. We stayed two nights at Shakespeare Chateau and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Isabelle provided a wonderful historic tour of the Inn and answered my husband's (the history buff) relentless questions. We felt pampered and enjoyed... More

There are stunning details in every room that have been brought back to near original quality by the owner. From carved ceiling beams to hand printed landscape wallpaper, to beautiful stained glass this home abounds with "the best" designer details that... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The majestic Shakespeare Chateau was built in 1885 by Nathan Ogden when St. Joseph Missouri was known as "The Queen of the River Cities." High atop a bluff looking down across the city toward the Missouri River, 809 Hall Street is one of several mansions in the Hall Street Historic District known locally as "Millionaires' Row." You'll enjoy meeting the friendly innkeeper, Isobel, as she takes you through the palatial interior. You'll marvel at 47 (yes, 47!) Original stained glass windows, carved cherrywood, mahogany, and walnut mantles, and of course, a bust of the Bard himself above the grand fireplace in the front foyer. But most of all, you'll enjoy our comfortable sleeping rooms, each one beautifully appointed with fabulous art and antiques and luxurious linens. ... more   less
