The majestic Shakespeare Chateau was built in 1885 by Nathan Ogden when St. Joseph Missouri was known as "The Queen of the River Cities." High atop a bluff looking down across the city toward the Missouri River, 809 Hall Street is one of several mansions in the Hall Street Historic District known locally as "Millionaires' Row." You'll enjoy meeting the friendly innkeeper, Isobel, as she takes you through the palatial interior. You'll marvel at 47 (yes, 47!) Original stained glass windows, carved cherrywood, mahogany, and walnut mantles, and of course, a bust of the Bard himself above the grand fireplace in the front foyer. But most of all, you'll enjoy our comfortable sleeping rooms, each one beautifully appointed with fabulous art and antiques and luxurious linens.

This is by far the most beautiful B&B in which we’ve ever stayed! The detail of the woodwork and stained glass windows is breathtaking. We enjoyed touring the neighborhood on our walk to Boudreaux’s Restaurant for dinner. We appreciated our breakfast and chatting with Isobel about the history of the chateaux. If you marvel at the beauty of historic mansions, the Shakespeare Chateaux will not disappoint!

Isobel has turned this once downtrodden chateau into an absolute delight. The architectural details in the foyer alone are worth a visit. Our room was well appointed & very comfortable. Breakfast the following morning was delicious! Would recommend to anyone visiting the St. Joseph area.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful weekend at this amazing bed and breakfast. The rooms were clean and quiet. The house is equipped with an amazing 3rd floor guest amenities lounge that is so inviting. The breakfast both mornings was superb. We also enjoyed the close proximity to the museums, dining and parks. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Breakfast was delicious and the room had a four-footed tub in it! The neighborhood is lovely as well. We loved hearing the history of the house. We stayed one night so couldn't really judge much more.

Once again, having stayed at "the Chateau" many times over the years, we had an especially memorable experience attending the red carpet premier of the movie "Christmas at the Chateau", a wonderful movie showcasing the Shakespeare Chateau as well as the city of St. Joseph. Another gem is the Missouri Theatre where we viewed the movie. We never cease admiring the restoration work accomplished by Isobel both before and after she opened the Chateau. The attention to detail and care is evident everywhere you look. We observe new features each time we stay. In fact, a one night stay is definitely not enough to fully appreciate the art, the furniture, the woodwork, the wallpaper, the tile, etc. Each morning the smell of coffee prompts us to have that first cup on the front porch (weather permitting). During this recent visit, breakfast was a different gourmet treat each morning. On the third morning, Sunday, we especially liked the French toast. Isobel offers breakfast served in the dinning room at the guests desired time, however, we especially like meeting and conversing with other guests.
