The lodge is unbelievable! Like a fairy tale. It's up on a hill, everything is made by wood and ecological. The rooms are pretty comfortable but they need some restoration. Breakfast and dinner were good but service was slow and inadequate. They kept confusing our bills because they didn't give receipts. But I fully enjoyed it and I strongly recommend this lodge.

I am surprised by some of the poor reviews. We booked this hotel last minute after staying at Masaya hotel. The staff was super friendly. The rooms were spacious with comfortable bed. Please remember you are coming to stay away from technology and to enjoy the culture and scenery.

It could be excellent: the view is great as it is uphill San Agustin, and the structure is very nice with blocks scattered in a well kept garden and decorated with paintings and sculptures by a local artist that you can meet. But the hotel in itself is not up to the expectations. Apart from the location, not easily manageable on foot and far from the town and everything like bars or restaurants, the rooms though nice lack basic facilities (no tv, no complimentary water, tea/coffee, no fridge, no safe), towels are small and above all they saw better days, being ragged, with holes not even darned. Pillows are terrible, too high and hard. Breakfast leaves much to be desired: first day I asked for fried eggs and I got something much more similar to hard boiled, uneatable, the day after I tried with scrambled and they were too salted. Apart from eggs you just get fruit and juice. I had dinner once, small portion and just ok. The reception is almost always empty and I had difficulty to pay with credit card. Wifi works well.

Responded Jul 26, 2023
hank you for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay at our hotel. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the excellent view and appreciated the unique structure with the local artist's paintings and sculptures. However, we deeply regret that some aspects of your experience did not meet your expectations. We take all guest comments seriously and continuously strive to improve our services. Regarding the location, we understand that being uphill in San Agustin might not be ideal for everyone. While the scenic views are a highlight, we acknowledge that accessibility to other amenities like bars and restaurants might require transportation, and we will work on providing more information to our guests about nearby options. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the lack of certain facilities in the rooms. Your comments regarding the absence of a TV, complimentary water, tea/coffee, fridge, and safe have been noted, and we will carefully consider how to improve the room amenities for a more comfortable stay. Your feedback on the pillows and breakfast has been taken into account, and we will review these areas to ensure that we offer a more enjoyable dining experience with a variety of options and improved pillow selection for a good night's sleep. We appreciate your comments on the reception and payment process. Our team will be informed of this to ensure that we have staff readily available to assist with any inquiries and to facilitate smooth and convenient payment methods. We are pleased to know that the Wi-Fi service worked well during your stay, and we will continue to prioritize a reliable internet connection for our guests' convenience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, as this helps us identify areas for improvement. We hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to showcase the positive changes we are making based on your valuable feedback. If you have any further concerns or wish to discuss your stay in more detail, please feel free to contact us directly. We value your satisfaction and are committed to delivering a better experience in the future. Warm regards,

There is an overriding problem here with security. It is not safe to stay at this hotel. In short we were robbed at the hotel, our room was ransacked and anything of value was stolen and our suitcases all turned over. This was not really surprising. The security provisions at the hotel are almost non existent, certainly the staff and management pay no attention to it are quite frankly negligent in this respect. The entrance gates are open all the time and not supervised; Reception is rarely manned and room keys are just lying around; There are no security cameras; There are no security staff at all; No room safes; Room keys/locks are old and worn Yale style, easy to subvert. We were so lucky that we were not in occupation at the time. The local police were very helpful, if a little scary, unlike the hotel owners who were much more worried about their local reputation. Reluctantly the hotel accepted liability for our losses and promised to repay us, as witnessed by both the police and our guide. Despite our repeated reminders which they have totally ignored, no recompense has been forthcoming. We are not really surprised by this, their promise was always false. There is obviously little point in reviewing the hotel as you are making a mistake if you book here. Incidentally, its dated, wacky, poorly managed, dirty and the food is dreadful!! Please take our comments seriously, there are safer places to stay in San Augustin.

Having traveled extensively, I’ve developed a basic + fundamental list of ‘must haves’ - regardless of where I am in the world. Top of my list - a good night’s sleep. This was not to happen during our first night at Akawanka. Instead, the smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night. To the hotel’s credit, they replaced the battery the next morning — after we informed them of the problem — but they should have been checking the alarms to make sure they were working properly. Also - we couldn’t call them to fix the problem ( I can’t remember if the phone didn’t work or we had no phone.) Even if we could have called much of the time there was no one at the front desk. We also felt that as solo travelers ( not part of the 2 large tour groups that were staying there when we were) we were overlooked.

The staff at this hotel could not have been more helpful. We stayed for three nights and the tranquility and calm of the complex was a delight. The artist/ receptionist was particularly helpful and her creative and imaginative art work provided the hotel with a unique sense of place. Beautiful freshly cooked lunches and dinners. We had a truly delightful stay while visiting the archaeological park. Great location.

The gardens of this hotel are beautifully presented. The rooms, fairly simple, but with some nice decorative touches are comfortable. Bathrooms could be a bit better - hot water in the shower was exceedingly hot but not much cold to cool it down, and the top was coming off the tap in the basin. Staff pleasant but only Spanish speaking and the restaurant rather let the Lodge down, service was erratic and food not brilliant. Beautiful area though.
