Detailed Reviews
I'm So Happy We Ended Up Here ... reads a sign above the bar & it perfectly describes how we felt about our visit. The cab ride along the twisty jungle road had us curious as to what we had gotten ourselves into however the second we were inside the Hacienda's gates, we knew that we had found a very special place. Our hosts Terri & Steve made the most of our stay from Terri's delicious locally inspired breakfasts (her Tomatilla sauce is amazing) & Steve's engaging stories of his life before HDLC. Our room was spacious & airy - a perfect place to listen to the sounds of the jungle & the distant surf. Sunsets from the pool deck were breathtaking & there was often one of their rescue dogs nearby for a pat or a cuddle. Sayulita is close enough to walk (though next time we'll rent a car) & there are 2 beaches within walking distance that are stunning & practically deserted. We would fly back tomorrow if we could & are certain another visit is in our future ..

This place is amazing! These hosts know how to treat you right- from comfortable beds, to plush towels, great coffee, immaculate cleanliness-to all the amenities needed for a perfect beach day! The breakfasts are delicious! The views from the Haciendas are beautiful! A 45 min walk on a gorgeous jungle path to Sayulita. The pool area is a perfect setting for hanging out and relaxing. Enjoy a cup of coffee on your private patio or take it by the pool side. Bring your own drinks or mix your own for a small fee at the pool bar. Steve and Teri do whatever they can to make your stay perfect. They will give you excellent directions and suggestions! We had so much fun exploring this area! The landscaping here is gorgeous- the pool nice and warm! A true little oasis in the middle of the jungle!

Last month I had the great pleasure of staying at Cinetica with my son. We had planned a trip to Nuevo Vallarta and decided to extend our stay and explore Sayulita for a few days. We expected great waves and a great vibe (we've heard about Sayulita for years), but we did not expect to find such a unique and wonderful home base for our Sayulita adventure.
The property is exceptional. Tucked into the jungle hillside Cinetica is envelopes you in nature and tranquility. Our suite was quite close to others, but I always felt as though we were in complete privacy due to how the property was laid out. The pool is beautiful, and two beaches within a short walk are beautiful and nearly private.
The owners/hosts were warm welcoming and made us feel at home right away. They were incredibly gracious with my young son and made a lasting impression (he talks about wanting to go back to Cinetica almost daily).
Pros:
+ Off the beaten path (quiet and secluded)
+ Beautiful, spacious suites
+ Lush jungle setting
+ Easy access to amazing beaches
Cons:
- Limited dining options. We cooked in our suite, and it worked out very well. Just know that you will not be walking to the taqueria
I can't wait to visit Cinetica again!

When my girlfriend and i pulled up to the gorgeous Hacienda after traveling the winding jungle road up from Sayulita, Steve was there to greet us. He said "Welcome to Paradise!" This proved to be absolutely true. The tranquil setting is incredibly peaceful offering panoramic stunning views of the ocean, particularly at sunset. We noticed an abundance of bird species and gorgeous native plants and flowers. The access to secluded beaches and yet it's proximity to Sayulita, made this the perfect choice. we made the short trip to Sayulita daily in our rental car. The rooms were airy, bright, cool and extremely comfortable. The full kitchen was amazing and beautiful. The pool refreshing and luxurious. Steve and Terri go out of their way to help with any possible thing you may need. We stayed a few nights in Sayulita, and then 5 nights at the Hacienda. I cannot recommend this place high enough and i hope to be back. Enjoy!

We have now been coming to this property since 2013. So it is easy to say that we feel at home here and want to return often. Terri and Steve go beyond to make sure you feel at home and welcomed here. Terri is an excellent cook who makes a different breakfast each morning and Steve is an perfect host! It is not so much Sayulita that we want to come back to but to Hacienda de la Costa. If you visit give garbo extra love for me xoxo

Had a wonderful, quiet stay, with lots of jungle walks to town and the beaches, which we had all to ourselves. Clean, comfortable and gorgeous all around. The pool and view can’t be beat and the value overall is superb.

After my wife posted a less-than-stellar review of this place, I received an email from the owners accusing us of "attacking [their] livelihood" and of not informing ourselves well enough before we came.
So I thought I'd offer my thoughts about what we thought before we came and what you might expect at Hacienda de la Costa.
We read all the great reviews, and we thought we knew what we were signing on for. We read the information Steve and Terri sent, and we thought it sounded close enough to town to be easy, but far away enough to be peaceful. We thought it sounded like a lot of our needs would be met and it would be a great place to hang out.
But what we came here expecting did not line up with what we experienced, and we left after only a few days, even though we originally planned a week here (and we paid in full when we arrived and we were offered no refund).
So don't make the assumptions we made—be prepared.
There are many good things about this place, and it obviously suits a lot of people’s tastes, given the number of great reviews it gets.
But...
It’s much more remote than we thought. It's a long walk into town, which requires some exertion (two hilly miles, which took us 40 minutes—and we’re very fit, like to walk, and work out hard with a trainer three times per week). The walk has many pleasures, but it may not be what you want to do each time you want a meal—taxis or a rental car are going to be needed for longer stays. And the drive (or walk) is on a rutted, hilly, sometimes very steep dirt road; you may find that either exciting or offputting.
The setting is spectacular, the pool and gardens are truly lovely. It's very clean and well-tended. We loved the sweet pets wandering around.
You may love it.
But it's more of a wilderness vacation than we'd anticipated, and the town, once you get there, to me is an uncomfortable mix of wealthy tourists, villas, and touristy shops juxtaposed with really poor locals, dusty homes, dogs, and roosters, topped with an offputting overlay of self-congratulation from the tourists — "Oh, aren't we cool, hanging out in the "real" Mexico?"
As if. I hardly think you can congratulate yourself for having an “authentic” experience when all the shops and restaurants cater to and are full of wealthy North Americans.
And, facts:
—The beds are hard. Steve said no one had ever told him this, but really it's like sleeping on one of those thermarest camping pads on the ground. We heard other guests say the same thing during our stay.
—At night, the no-see-ums come out biting, so you don't really want to hang around outdoors. And Steve mentioned that when the figs are ripe, there are tons of bees around during the day, so that might be worth asking about (fortunately it wasn’t bee season for us!).
—Most likely they've fixed it, but while we were there, the Internet and phone lines were down.
—We wouldn't have worried a great deal about safety, but we were told by Steve that we should worry about the workers above the suite and lock our room, that if they became "disgruntled," who knew--they might decide to steal something. Then the maid left our door unlocked.
—Perhaps we caught them on a bad several days, but Terri was pleasant but not around much, and Steve was a characte—crusty and chatty, but with a dark undercurrent that made you think you wouldn't want to cross him, and a sort of "get-your-butts-in-the-breakfast-chairs-N-O-W" demeanor in the mornings that we hadn't expected when we heard "breakfast is served between 8 and 9." Breakfast is in fact served when Terri has it ready, and you better be there or miss it. And that is an attitude I hadn’t expected—that people staying there are guests in Steve and Terri’s home, and it’s kind of a live-by-their-rules feeling. We had expected to feel more—well, pampered a bit, I guess. Instead, the hospitality seemed slightly grudging, as if they’d really rather not have guests, but we help pay the bills.
—If you plan to have a beach day, wear shoes and carry flip-flops (you won't want to hike the road in flip-flops) and plan to carry all the things you'll need/want, either to the near-ish beaches or to the main beach in town.
—I think we fantasized that “poolside wetbar” meant some kind of staff helping with it. No, it's a do-it-yourself affair, the house tequila is low-grade, and you are expected to keep a running tab for yourself.
—If you plan to cook yourself meals (and you should plan to, or else you’ll have to head to town for every lunch, and for dinner if Terri is not cooking), be aware there are not a lot of grocery stores in Sayulita. There is an OK basic market, a couple smaller tiendas, and a small, uninspiring butcher and fish shop. You might be okay with what you can buy, but personally I wouldn't count on supplying a lot of full-on meals from Sayulita's stores.
—When choosing a room, the Vista suite does have nice vistas—but only if you're standing up. When you sit out on the terraces, you mostly only see the sky because of the way the porches are built. If you’re still planning on going, book the lower suite with the better views.

Response from hdlcosta, Owner at Hacienda de la Costa
Responded Mar 26, 2010
Steve and I couldn’t have been more surprised by this couple’s negative reviews. Prior to their arrival we knew that they were to spend one week with us followed by a second week in Puerto Vallarta. We arranged for a private driver to greet them in the airport and bring them to Hacienda de La Costa on the afternoon of Friday, February 12th. The driver was to return the following Friday to take them to their condo rental in Vallarta’s Zona Romantica. After their arrival we learned that they originally booked their visit because the wife had signed up for a writer’s workshop that was to take place in Sayulita but that the workshop was canceled, unfortunately leaving them little motivation for being here. On Sunday, Valentine’s Day, they spent some time in Sayulita and returned in the afternoon with the news that their condo rental in Vallarta was available so they would be moving to Vallarta earlier than expected and “could (we) please reschedule their ground transportation for the following morning?” Upon hearing this news, Steve specifically asked them if there was a problem and the only thing they shared was that they found the mattress hard, this surprised us considering that all of the mattresses have foam toppers and quilted mattress covers but we understand that the desired firmness of a mattress is a very subjective quality that varies greatly from person to person. They never stated any other complaints and never asked for a refund. It was our understanding that they were moving to Vallarta early simply as a matter of preference for “city” over “pueblo”. Being Valentine’s Day, upon their request we had arranged a romantic dinner for them at our favorite table overlooking the plaza in Calypso, they claimed to have very much enjoyed their dinner, especially the more than generous portion of seared Ahi tuna. The transportation company arrived the following day so we said our goodbye’s and wished them a wonderful stay in Vallarta. After their departure we realized that they hadn’t paid either one of us for their rather large bar bill nor had they left a tip for our staff. Oh well, just an oversight we thought, but now we realize they were creating their own compensation package. Had we known of their discontent we would have done anything within our power to rectify the situation but given his brutally insulting assessment of Sayulita, the locals and their fellow tourists I doubt there is anything we could have done to bring them happiness. He described Sayulita as being “topped with an overlay of self-congratulation from the tourists” and imagined them thinking “Oh, aren’t we cool, hanging out in the “real” Mexico?” Our experience couldn’t be more different, those tourists are representative of our guests and we find them to be a very diverse group with a common thread of adventuresome and savvy, we have thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each and every one. This reviewer and his wife are the only two guests to have ever given us poor reviews and as you scroll down to find her review “Things I wish I’d known about Hacienda de La Costa”, please take note of the vastly different opinions shared by all of our other guests that also had recent visits, both prior to and following these reviewers’ very short stay.

After a busy week spent with friends and family in Puerto Vallarta, we escaped to Hacienda de la Costa for a few days at the aft end of our trip. This was one of the best decisions we've ever made! After reading reviews on trip advisor we knew we'd be in good hands with Terri and Steve but we were surprised that both they and their property surpassed our already high expectations. Thank you Terri and Steve for the beautiful, clean accommodations... The outstanding breakfasts and margaritas... The time and attention you gave us regarding our travel plans and recommendations... The amazing attention to the finer details that make a great vacation i.e. beautiful clean pool, beach towels, comfy lounge chairs, access to bar, beach umbrellas, boogie boards... all amongst one of the most beautiful landscapes (including incredible view) I've ever had the pleasure of getting to stay in and enjoy.
Then, once you can remove yourself from the incredible accommodations, you get to walk to one of the finest little towns in Mexico, Sayulita. Great shops, restaurants, beaches, with a bustling El Centro filled with happy families, children, and dogs. This is one of the cutest towns I've ever wandered around and consider myself fortunate for getting to experience this little slice of heaven! Bring your walking shoes because it is a small trek to get there.
THEN, if that isn’t enough, there are the private beaches within walking distance of the Hacienda! Beautiful, unspoiled, and uninhabited.
The location of this Hacienda was perfect for us. We loved the remote, jungle setting. The bird watching and the long walks. It definitely worked for what we wanted in our trip, which was quiet and true relaxation.
I can't say enough good things, we loved it! Thanks Terri and Steve for everything, we can’t wait to come back!

I wasn't sure what to expect. Knew the hacienda was two miles from Sayulita along a rough dirt road and was a little concerned. Absolutely unfounded concern! Steve and Terri, the owners, have put so much work and much heart into creating a relaxing, welcoming, beautiful retreat. Terri serves a delicious, healthy breakfast every morning and there is well-equipped, well kept shared kitchen space to prepare lunch and/or dinner should you not wish to go in to Sayulita.
Because you are out of town, the closest beaches are far less populated - 9 people the first day we went. There is a lovely pool at the Hacienda should you not wish to go to the beach.
The other guests we met there were a pleasure and Steve was very helpful in making any arrangements we needed, particularly a snorkeling expedition we went on.
The rooms are spacious and very comfortable, thoughtfully designed by Terri. It was a pleasure to have such a lovely view of the ocean from our room.
The grounds of the Hacienda are carefully tended and cultivated - bouganvilla, hibiscus, birds of paradise. Loved it all.

My wife and I just got back from our first trip to Western Mexico. We decided to stay at the Hacienda after reading the excellent reviews, and now we can say that the experience truly lives up to the reputation.
Starting months earlier when we reserved our room, Terri was very helpful in answering our many questions as well as arranging for a convenient transportation service to pick us up at the airport. Miguel met us at the airport with a cooler of ice cold Pacificos, and our stop at the Mega supermarket allowed us to stock up on plenty of food, both familiar and authentic Mexican, for us to enjoy during our downtime at the Hacienda.
Upon our arrival Steve and Terri showed us to our room and invited us to come down to the poolside bar to have a Margarita (delicious, by the way) after unpacking and getting settled. Steve is very knowledgable about Sayulita and as we had our drinks he told us the best places to go during our short stay. Terri made a great dinner of butter poached shrimp, pistachio crusted chicken, and asparagus, and during the meal we got a chance to meet some of the other guests who were also at the Hacienda.
The Hacienda allows you to enjoy whatever kind of vacation you are after. We just wanted to get away from our busy schedules and enjoy some quiet time, laying by the pool under the hot Mexico sun - this vacation was ideal for us. When we wanted to explore, the town and various beaches were never too far and returning after dark was nothing more than a short cab ride home.
I couldn't say enough about Terri and Steve's hospitality. They genuinely wanted us to enjoy our time in Mexico and were more than willing to help us make the most of our time. When we wanted to enjoy an authentic Mexican meal, they gave us directions to a little house whose owners pretty much opened a restaurant in the backyard of their home, where we had a delicious meal at an amazing value. When we wanted to enjoy a nice meal on one of our last nights in Sayulita, they made reservations for us at the Calypso restaurant, and even ensured we were seated at one of the best corner tables overlooking the plaza.
In the end, what separates the Hacienda from a more commercial resort is the unique combination of a tranquil and private setting, attentive and delightful hosts, and the flexibility to make every day of your vacation whatever you want it to be.

That's a good question. There are two secluded beaches, each is just a short walk away, approximately 10 minutes. Ocean conditions are always changing, there are times when conditions are nearly flat and times when the swell can be 4-6 feet, especially if there's a storm offshore. Most commonly there's a two foot swell, great for boogie-boarding, lounging and exploring. Not recommended for snorkeling.
Hello Jan,
Thank you for your interest in our little inn. The ocean view suites are currently $160 USD per night. I will email you with the availability specifics. There are several ways to travel from Nuevo Vallarta to Sayulita with options for every budget. The most convenient would be to use a private transportation company, this is something we can arrange on your behalf. You could also taxi from your hotel to Sayulita or, for the most economical option, you can arrive by bus.
Kind regards,
Terri
