This is a great spot from which to discover the gastronomy and alentejo's landscapes. The location is beautiful, at the slope of the castle of Monsaraz, people are very friendly at the hotel and I specially enjoyed the horse drawn carriage ride.

Perhaps there is new management because our stay could not be more different than earlier reviews. Most of the rooms seem to be suites which includes a separate sitting area, and have private patios. Rooms were clean and service was friendly and efficient. The on-site restaurant was very good, and breakfast excellent, featuring local fresh cheese and meats and delivered to the room at a time of your choosing. The views from the pool over the olive grove were lovely. We didn't swim but the pool was clean and clear. After staying elsewhere in Portugal at luxury hotels that were significantly more expensive but were always lacking something, it was nice to find a comfortable, affordable but charming and unpretentious hotel.

Beautiful hotel. We stayed for three nights at this special place. Cannot fault anything. Great place, friendly staff and great food. If we ever get the chance to back to Monsaraz we will be staying here.

Excellent reception, stay and dinner. Spacious and tidy rooms, engaging and refined decor, very pleasant space very close to Monsaraz.

Given the good reception, we tried to return. Unfortunately, it closed its doors and did not disclose this situation to the partners who promote it.
An unforgivable failure and probably due to the attitude demonstrated, the reason for the conduct that led to this outcome.

Disclosing a negative note.

The hotel reminded me of the Fawlty Towers TV show, where the needs of guests are an annoying obligation to management . We were an international group of 10 cyclists from 5 different countries on a 600km tour of the stunning Alentejo. The group was mostly professional and all were seasoned international business travellers. We had chosen the hotel after a site visit in November as it looked and felt charming and spacious and was a stone's throw from the magical town of Monsarez. To give credit where it's due , the rooms were spacious and comfortable and the breakfast outstanding. But the bureaucracy and formality of the service and rules were simply laughable- you would have to try extremely hard to get it more wrong and one could not really blame the staff. They seemed quite incapable or afraid of thinking for themselves. Great service oriented hotels have the attitude: " The answer is 'yes' , are there any questions?" Poor service hotels say : " the answer is 'no', what is the question?" Everything we needed from this hotel was a struggle, from finding safe storage for our valuable bikes , arranging transport to our restaurant in Monsarez , to simply wanting to have a drink after dinner in the bar and play pool on a great table that had no balls. Further examples: 1) in order to log onto wifi , you had to go to reception, nominate your devices( in my case 3) and the reception staff prepared and printed out a complex separate password and user name , impossible to remember and requiring strong spectacles and light to read. And I have 20:20 vision. The question one asks , is: "who is going to steal their wifi in the middle of nowhere?" 2) Using the mini bar required one to visit those "rabbit in the headlights" reception staff again and to have your credit card with you so that you did not run off leaving a €2 outstanding bill, despite them having a credit card imprint anyway. Did we look that dodgy? 3) No flexibility whatsoever to permit our van driver with all our luggage to check in on our behalf , and deliver our luggage to our rooms, while we were en route cycling, as it was a requirement to see each of us and our passports before doing so. Claiming this is a legal requirement overlooks the fact that our previous stay in the marvelous Albergaria do Calvario in Evora met with a completely, " no problem , just ask the gentlemen to show us identification when they arrive" 4) We had a physiotherapist drive up from the Algarve to massage the group starting at 3pm. She arrived early and went to the restaurant to order a quick soup so she could prepare for her long afternoon. When, after 15 minutes, the soup had not arrived , with no more than 4 other customers in the restaurant she was told that it was strict policy to serve the person who had ordered first , irrespective of how long it took the kitchen to prepare the relative dishes. FIFO principle gone crazy? She waited for 20 minutes for a soup! 5) Anxious to leave on our next leg of the cycle to Mertola the next morning ,we thought that there would be some flexibility to start breakfast a few minutes before their extremely late 8:30 designated opening time. Again, our benchmark was our stay in Evora where they accommodated us a full half hour earlier for a 7:30am start. Was Basil going to be flexible? By now you know the answer, sports fans. The staff, despite being there made us wait outside until exactly 8:30. One has to admire the consistent inflexibility displayed by management which one assumes can only come as an edict from above. Very good for running an army and fighting a war. Not so good for managing a hotel.

We visited this hotel for a special family occasion and picked it due to the gastronomic restaurant description on their website. Unfortunately it did not live up to the website serving only 2 set menus and snacks despite our enquiry regarding an al a carte menu which we were assured they had.
The management and recption staff tried to make amends but unfortunately we were all very disappointed. The restaurant had a cafeteria feel and bar facilities lacking, though we did find another bar the morning we were leaving that may have been open

On a positive note the hotel , location, and grounds were really nice , spotlessly clean and comfortable, though maybe due for decoration

We had a wonderful time at Horta da Moura. Lovely place, great location, near the beautiful Monsaraz.
Don't forget to visit the property, we had a terrific tour by one of the staff. Impressive olive trees!
The place does seam to have a lot of rules, but that didn't get in our way.

Beautiful location. Two nights. Agree with other comments regarding rooms. Very good breakfast and very good dining. Beautiful grounds, well cared for. Swam in charming pool. Warm enough even in late October. Hiking group of four couples. All satisfied with accommodation, Faultless Reception, Dining and Breakfast room staff. Perfectly acceptable and safe to leave our cars in a covered parking area till we returned for them a week later. Plan to return soon to continue exploring Monsaraz and surrounding countryside.

We recently stayed here early in the new year. The hotel was very charming, quiet (at this time of year anyway) and relatively easy to find. Views were spectacular, rooms was quite large and comfortable. Wifi access was terrible in our room. We had one dinner in the restaurant and were quite disappointed in not only the quality of the product but the service also. Our server tried, but clearly lacked experience, and was unable to aid us at all with ordering wine and getting us any information on some of the food. There are several very good restaurants in the village of Monsaraz and we found that they were all worth driving back to as even their ambiance was nicer. Breakfast, however was fantastic. Great selection at their buffet. I would highly recommend a stay here as there are plenty of activities to partake in also.
