The Elms Hotel and Spa, nestled in historic charm, is often praised for its spa features, including a grotto and pool, which are a hit with many guests. However, some visitors have called out the smaller, outdated rooms and the less-than-comfortable beds, alongside occasional noise issues. The hotel's cleanliness and service receive mixed reviews, with experiences ranging from meticulous upkeep to noticeable oversights and service that varies from warm to lacking. Additionally, the overall value is a point of contention for guests who feel the pricing is steep for the offered experience.

We had a nice getaway here as a couple without kids. It is family friendly and there were a to. Of kids at the pool.
Most of my suggestions for improvement center around the pool area. I realize it would be hard to keep all leaves and debris out of the pool as it is surrounded by trees, but it didn’t appear they do much cleaning of the pool at all. We kept finding big chunks of hair, as well as tons of bugs, that weren’t being filtered out. One guest got up and found the skimmer and said, “I guess I’ll do it if they aren’t going to.”
Our first day there was a pool attendant who picked up towels and sanitized chairs... the next day there wasn’t. This might be due to the fact that the boss/owner was having a birthday party for their child there that day. This also meant the bar was open on a Monday when it usually wasn’t. I think they are missing out by not having the pool bar open when they are busy.
Last comment about the pool... if it is busy with paying customers, they should really make an attempt to keep people out who aren’t staying there. There seemed to be groups of people coming in the side gate who weren’t staying there. Not fair for paying customers when the pool is packed and chairs were full.

Moving on! The restaurant was great! Our waiter was awesome, professional, knowledgeable and helpful. We are there twice at 88 and I thought there could be more options on the menu, but both things I ordered were AMAZING. The filet was the best steak I had in ages, and cooked perfectly. The pork shoulder was super tender and delicious. The desserts were great also...red velvet cheesecake was fantastic.

Overall, we really liked it and would come back, but would try to get a room higher up not looking at air conditioners and then it would be even better!

For our 20th anniversary, with the Coronavirus going on, our 7th grandchild on the way & some work related items we needed to stay close to home for, we decided to take a larger trip later in the year. I still wanted to do something special & I thought about The Elms. I booked a Royal Suite but put in a special request asking if we could get some kind of upgrade for our anniversary. When we arrived (Tues. March 10, 2020) the parking lot only had 5 cars in it. We were greeted at the front desk & Jennifer checked us in. She was very friendly, saw our request when she pulled up our reservation & graciously upgraded us. She put us in the Truman Suite & gave us a $50 voucher toward dinner in 88 that night. We rode in the elevator which is very small (only big enough for two with bags) but the style was true to the era of the hotel. The suite was at the end of a hallway lending to a quiet sanctuary. It also overlooked the front of the hotel. This was a grand (for the era of the hotel) 3 room suite not counting the huge gorgeous bathroom that included separate shower, a claw foot tub with shower hose also and two sinks. Walls had fresh paint, carpet was new and room was well stocked and clean. Our 7:30 dinner in 88 was next to the huge fireplace as requested & there were only 2 other tables seated so we had the place almost to ourselves. The wood fired steaks had the best smoky flavor of any steak we have ever ordered. Later we enjoyed the underground European lap pool, hot tub and cold tub. There are towels for use just as you walk in the doors. I slept till 10 the next morning. My husband said this was the most relaxed he has been in a long time. The only "ghostly" experience we may have encountered was one of the sconces in the dining room of the suite made an on & off ghostly howling noise in the evening. We joked about it being a ghost but figured it was probably pipes, maybe water pipes. Weirdly though, in the morning until we left, we never heard it again. So who knows. We will definitely be making more trips to stay, especially off season as it was much quieter & relaxed than when we stayed in Sept. 2018.

We were coming to the Elms for a wedding and decided to get a room for the night since the weather was not so great. Room was beautifully updated and my 6'3" husband was very pleased with how high your shower heads are mounted. Food for the wedding was catered by the Elms and was very tasty (lasagna, chicken alfredo, ceasar salad, roasted veggies and bread sticks). Hotel Lobby was festively decorated and very clean. We will for sure be back!

Reserved an upgraded room booked for a birthday celebration. That adds up to $179 plus $49.31 in taxes. That's almost 28% more for the room for taxes and destination fees. Ended up with a room with zero view unless you like to see the rooftop from the first floor buildout. The double pedestal bathroom had only one set of towels even though this room was booked for two people and the front desk acted like it was a big imposition to deliver more. Glad we walked through the lower level upon arrival because it rained and everything was flooded the next day. Had hoped to book a spa appt. but it had to close. Had reservations for dinner and the menu we had viewed online had completely changed, so much so that nothing we wanted was available. Even the waitress didn't realize this was going on. The bartender couldn't deliver a simple Jameson on the rocks. Does it get easier than that? She poured a Jameson Black Barrel and gave me attitude when I explained that was not what we ordered. Only bright spot was that the ladies at the cafe were lovely and everything we had for breakfast was great. Sadly, we can't recommend paying this kind of money for so much disappointment.

My boyfriend and I traveled from Omaha to stay and take advantage of the spa massage services. Before even arriving, we both called two separate times to ask a question and were both spoken to rudely by the front desk without really answering our questions or knowing the answers. They did not take the time to find the answer for us either. The spa was overbooked (we overheard an employee saying this). Because of this, they ran out of robes (they require you to change into before going into the spa). When telling the staff about needing a robe, three staff members seemed annoyed that myself and another female customer were asking for one. They also gave me slippers (required to wear) that were too small and I told them I needed a bigger size to which the employee told me those were the last ones and was very rude about it making me feel like I needed to deal with it. She finally went to find me another pair after i told her I can't fit into them. The check in desk at the spa was also very confusing as they kind of expected us to know where to go or what to do and also came off rude towards us when we asked a question. Once we got into the actual spa, we had to stand and wait outside of the quiet room as it was full of people and did not get to take advantage of the relaxing atmosphere before our massage. We booked a therapeutic couples massage which is supposed to be in between a swedish and deep tissue massage. My boyfriend was very disappointed saying his felt like the massage therapist was simply applying lotion to his body the entire time with no pressure. Mine on the other hand was the most painful massage I've ever had and was no way relaxing. My body was tense the entire time. We did not even try going into the gratto as we heard from other customers that it was too crowded. We were very disappointed in our stay and will not be returning.

We stayed from 10/22 to 10/25. A+ experience with very dedicated staff, especially John, Noah, and Susan. They treated us with genuine care and concern during the pandemic. John put our minds at ease from the start. It was readily apparent that safety protocols are in place to protect the health and safety of guests. There were times when we heard the front desk staff reminding guests to wear masks or even offering them. I cannot tell you how much this is appreciated! We loved our conversation with Susan in the coffee shop as she shared some extra background on the hotel. She makes a terrific iced "S'mores" iced latte! The hotel is filled with amazing history and many areas to explore. Noah was really the star of the show from start to finish. I think he knew us before we arrived! It was fun interacting with him throughout our stay. Regarding accommodations, we stayed on the 5th floor in a well-appointed room with the lounge, and we highly recommend it! Though the "Royal Experience" was closed due to the pandemic, we enjoyed spreading out. There are so much stories associated with the hotel and the town of Excelsior Springs, and we felt like we were living in history. We experienced some of the paranormal that added to our stay. We passed on the ghost tour due to the number of guests crowded in one place, but we decided to watch Ghost Hunters in our room instead! The lap pool is in the basement, an old speakeasy! The grounds are very well-manicured. Our meal at the Eighty-Eight was an A+. We enjoyed it via room service. The Chicken Saltimbocca and Fall Gnocchi were amazingly delicious, and it pairs well with glass of red and white wine from Fence Stile Winery, an exclusive offering. The location of the hotel is literally a block or two from the downtown offering boutique shops, delicious restaurants, and historical tours. We did not want to leave the hotel and cannot wait to make our return. As loyal Hyatt fans and as a couple who appreciates the history and charm, this hotel did so much for us. To sum up, the staff, property, and area amenities made this a truly memorable, enjoyable experience. We highly recommend a stay at The Elms! A special thanks to John and his team for making this an amazing experience!

I wanted to like this hotel, but almost everything went wrong. My fiancé had wanted to stay here for several years but we could never make it work with our schedule until now. The food: Breakfast room service was delivered an hour after our requested delivery time, and wasn’t even the correct order. The “prime” steak at the restaurant was the toughest steak I’ve ever tasted, and came with 2 very small sides included in a single to-go box. No way it was prime. Wasn't enough food, so we went back for the chicken thigh and the second time a manager took my order and I received the thigh in one box and the same 2 sides I ordered before in 2 separate boxes nearly double the size of my first order. I paid for everything individually both times and received 2 different quantities each time. Total trust violation on our first night. The room heating unit wouldn’t turn off and was so loud we couldn’t hear each other or the TV. The window was covered in cobwebs and the view was atrocious. Our couples massage at the spa wasn’t a couples massage at all. We ended up in separate rooms from each other. Room keys stopped working our second day, and when I went to get them fixed the attendant tried to check me out of the hotel altogether and under the wrong room number. She didn’t understand what I was asking for even though I repeated myself 4 times, and didn’t seem to be paying attention to what was going on at all. It took a second attendant, Jay the ghost tour guy, to figure out what was going on. He was clearly the best part of the whole stay. What should have been a 2 minute fix took nearly 10 minutes. Our room was also not serviced our second day. On our last day at 8am two staffers were yelling and whistling loudly in the hallway right outside of our room which woke us up. 30. Minutes. Before. Our. Alarm. The final straw for our time there. The whole experience ruined a getaway Valentine’s weekend with my fiancé after a year deployed overseas. Too many little mistakes for a “resort” hotel to be making. Also one of the worst ways to be introduced to world of Hyatt. I made a deliberate choice to switch from Marriott, but after my stay here with Hyatt it makes me want to go back. Terrible let down in almost every way. Not anywhere near worth the price we paid for the room and the spa.

We came to celebrate our anniversary, and loved the spa and grotto experience our room was lovely and so was the staff. We were so excited after an amazing lunch experience at the restaurant, we couldn’t wait for our 7:45 dinner reservation , however dinner was full of disappointments. We ordered our very overpriced meals, and when they did arrive( lamb) it tasted burnt like it was in a crock pot for days and so salty it was not even eatable. My husbands 42$ steak was all fat, we have had a better cut of steak at Perkins for breakfast. The waitress didn’t offer any accommodations took my barely touched plate and said she would tel the chef for next time- there won’t be a next time. I won’t recommend anyone to go to the restaurant, unless it’s to see PSue for lunch. So very disappointed . We left dinner hungry and upset with the quality of food being sent out , I wouldn’t have at that if it was free

This was our first time at The Elms. We chose the location to celebrate our anniversary, including local wine tasting and restaurants. The Elms is overpriced, grossly. The rooms are nice but very small, including a very small bathroom that 1 person barely fits in. The "wonderful river view" out our room's windows was sad; a parking lot next to a small creek. Our mattress was very noisy; every move sounded like we were rolling around on rice crispies.
Room service (breakfast) was delicious and reasonably priced (surprisingly). Our mochas from the cafe in the lobby were great and also reasonably priced.
Our spa services were very nice. We both did the hydrotherapy tubs (aka individual bath tubs w/ jets in individual rooms). My wife really enjoyed her 30 mins in the tub, but I was a little too tall (6'2") to enjoy it as much. Our spa service granted us 2 hours in the "grotto"; dry steam room, wet steam room, hot tub that could hold ~14 people, steam shower w/ sea salt scrub, and cold shower. We enjoyed our time in the grotto.
The Elms did not let us know that they had a shuttle that would drop you off and pick you up in town. After dinner in town, we saw the shuttle pick some folks. We called the front desk, and they came to pick us up a few mins later...not sure why they didn't tell us about that service when we checked in. Sadly, Excelsior Springs does not offer much in terms of restaurants, bars, and shopping. Many things are closed on Sundays. Many boutique stores were closed when tried visiting around 6:00pm; we're not sure if they were closed due to the pandemic or just close early.
We will not recommend The Elms to any of our friends, unfortunately. It was not worth the money we spent

The spa was the reason this is getting an average rating.  If it were not for the spa service, this would have received a poor grade.

We choose to stay at The Elms because of the great reviews we heard from friends and family about the Spa but did not realize the rooms and food were not up to par for what they charge.  The restaurant was well below average on food quality.  The menu was a reduced menu due to COVID, and you would anticipate the food would be excellent.  My wife ordered the filet, and I order the ribeye to be cooked at medium-rare.  They both came out almost well done.  The dessert they gave us was supposed to be a molten lave cake, and it was more of a chocolate bundt cake.  Nothing is lava about a bundt cake.  It was also supposed to be served with vanilla bean ice cream, and it was just plain vanilla ice cream.  Not a big deal, but when your menu says something, you expect it to be what's on the menu.

The gym was never cleaned or, what I should say properly clean.  Moving around the benches, you would find dust bunnies everywhere—fingerprints on the mirrors and who knows if the gym equipment was ever wiped down.

The hotel's best thing was the ambiance because it is a really cool old hotel and has a great story behind it, but that's about it.  We stayed in the King Suite in room 525, and the HVAC vent is almost directly above where you sleep at.  So, when the heat kicks on, it sounds like a small jet engine starting the engines.  This happened every hour to an hour and a half.  So, let's say sleeping was not the greatest—the beds were awesome as you are sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress.

The spa service is amazing though.  So, if we were to do it all over again, we would just go up for massages and take advantage of the grotto.

The town itself is a great little town and has a lot of history behind it and great boutique restaurants to try.
