Detailed Reviews
The Hotel Chester, its owners, and its staff are all absolute jewels. I came in from out of state to attend a funeral and wanted a place to stay that would be a quiet comfort. That can be a hard thing to find on the first football weekend of the season when the energy is running high and rooms all over town are completely filled. Luckily, I found a ‘Bachelor Queen’ (a description I love) at Hotel Chester. Admittedly, the rates were high, but that is to be expected on a big event weekend, and I was willing to pay for the convenience, safety, and comfort I thought I’d find there.
After making my reservation, I emailed them to ask about check in time and parking and to let them know that I might be late getting to the hotel (the service was in the late afternoon/early evening). I was surprised (and moved) to receive an email from the owner telling me my room would be ready extra early and that I was welcome to check in early so I could freshen up before the service. How incredibly kind! When I arrived, the sweet young lady at desk efficiently checked me in. When I entered my room, I smiled. I love historic hotels (and all historic buildings), and this sweet little room had the charm of a different time. There was plenty of space and the layout of the room was perfect. It was also impeccably clean. I freshened up and was off to the service (in a rural area about a half hour away).
When I returned, another kind young lady at the desk asked if I needed anything. I asked about local restaurants and breakfast in the morning (they offer morning pastries and a classic place is just around the corner if a hot breakfast is wanted). She had several suggestions, but as I was tired, I opted not to have dinner that night. Instead, I enjoyed the comfort and quiet of my room (despite the place being full of celebrants due to the game). The bed was comfy, and I rested exceptionally well. After breakfast, I loaded up early and was fortunate to meet David (the owner) and thank him personally. What a kind gentleman he is!
When I return to Starkville, I will definitely stay at Hotel Chester again. Lovely place. Lovely people. Thanks again, David and company, you all made a tough journey much easier. I’ll see you again!

I scratch my head reading anything less than superb reviews on this lovingly, carefully renovated treasure. We arrived last evening to an elegantly lit, flower adorned classic, beautiful hotel. David and his team have preserved a charming morsel of Starkville history and we are both grateful, and appreciative, of his undertaking. Anyone who has restored a home, let alone a sizable hotel can only appreciate what is required to accomplish this.
Our stay in a spacious Deluxe Gordon Ramsey features a very comfortable king bed, abundant pillows, impeccably clean. High ceilings with crown moulding, lovely contemporary yet traditional artwork adorn, delightful complementary toiletries.
There is a wet bar, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker.
We were greeted by David and his darling, well behaved schnauzer Sam. That I read a negative review on sweet, friendly and gentle Sam says it all—sour guests, who would be better suited at a lesser cookie cutter hotel. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Thank you, Dave, we salute you!. We cannot wait to return and with more free time to enjoy downtown Starkville.

We went to Starkeville for a wedding and decided to choose Hotel Chester since they had a fun looking beer garden. They have limited street parking at the front of the hotel but a large parking lot that is not too far for walking from the hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly front desk person and checked in with ease. We were here in September so everyone was still following Covid masks rules and nothing was uncomfortable about it. We got to our room which was on the back side of the hotel and it was nice and quiet. The bathroom is small and has the sink and mirror in the bedroom area. The hotel is not new so expect an older charm about the premise. Attached to the hotel is a beer-garden that does serve cocktails and wine besides beer with some fun food. We loved all the employees and you will probably get to meet the owner and his very friendly and loveable dog. Would stay here again if we return to Starkeville.

I stayed one night at Hotel Chester in Starkville, Mississippi. I chose this hotel because it was just two blocks from the concert venue I was visiting. The two ladies I interacted with on separate occasions were polite and friendly; however, the rest of the stay left a lot to be desired. I sent an email to the hotel after my stay about these issues and since I received no response, I decided I should write a public review. I chose one of the upgraded Gordon Ramsey rooms simply because historic decor is not my thing and gives me an eery feeling (strange I know). The bedroom was fine other than mismatched nightstands. However, the bathroom was a different story. I regret that I did not take pictures to share. It was extremely dated, dingy, and dirty. The bathroom was not pictured in the listing of the more modern room for obvious reasons. The grout and caulking had pink and black stains and needed to be replaced, the toilet did not flush properly and the sink took forever to drain - you could brush your teeth and come back 15 min later and it was still draining. I was only there for a brief stay so there was no reason to address the issues; however, paying $192 for a room like this was laughable. In the morning there was a small table with bottled water and packaged muffins and pastries for the guests. I took my selections to-go. When I arrived at my next hotel, I opened the muffin and it was covered in green, fuzzy mold! I checked the expiration date and it had long since passed. I called the hotel to let them know so that others did not consume them and at that time, I also told the staff member about the plumbing problems. She thanked me and that is the last I heard from the hotel, despite my email voicing these concerns. I advise against staying at this hotel and would stay at one of the chain hotels about a mile away.

I’m struggling with this as I truly want to love this place due to its historical significance. The front desk staff was great! She assisted us with the TV and our check-in was sufficient, quick and easy. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were nice. But the rest….. this treasure badly needs some TLC. Even the basic of updates would help, but the owners really need to replace the tubs, bathroom hardware, blinds, and for the love, the CARPET. This is not a $150/night or more hotel. It could literally be so, very grand if some money was put back into it. This place has so much potential to be the most sought after hotel in the area.

Hotel leaves a lot to be desired. Doesn't appeared to have been renovated, did not feel clean and southern hospitality....not sure they know what that is. Buyer beware, they charge you $50 per night per kid, which is not disclosed until check in. Beer garden is not open nor has it been maintained. I don't recommend, but should you brave the establishment don't forget your shower shoes.

Response from David Mollendor, Owner at Hotel Chester
Responded Nov 1, 2022
We usually find our reviews to be fair and accurate. Unfortunately, this one is more mean spirited than accurate. Over occupancy in rooms is rare, so identifying the party capable of such behavior is relatively easy. Your reservation was made direct with the hotel on 8/16/2022 for 2 adults arriving on 10/07/2022 for the Arkansas game weekend. The confirmation was emailed the same day, which details reservation details and hotel policies. Policy Item 3 on your confirmation clearly states that the maximum reserved occupancy cannot be exceeded without incurring a $50.00 per person per night penalty. Check in on 10/7 occurred with 2 adults arriving at the desk and registering for 2 occupants, only to be followed minutes later by the luggage and 5 children. The registering desk clerk then correctly followed published policy, called the room to apprise you of same, and then posted the additional charge. No question the amount was sizeable, which should not have been a surprise, as even when registering, you were asked to confirm the number of occupants. We are rigorous about room occupancy limits due to the historic nature of the building with its varied room sizes, and because we do not offer roll-away beds, baby cribs or other forms of moveable furniture. The comments about cleanliness and the Beer Garden are red herrings unworthy of further commentary.

The historic place has all modernity you can ask as well as hospitality of the hostess ans people that make a great place to stay.
We just tried the restaurant, with such a well balanced menu, prepared by one of the best chefs we've ever met. Is good to see how everybody is proud of what they do at Hotel Chester.

My biggest complaint is that I accidently left my orthopedic pillow and a king size blanket in my room. And I spent a week trying to speak to a manager who stated no one could find them. I will never stay here again.

Hotel Chester is a historic hotel in downtown Starkville in the midst of wonderful shops and restaurants. We loved the old world charm as you walk through the entrance. The hotel is welcoming and the staff makes you feel right at home. They provide a delicious home cooked breakfast each morning and a paper by the hotel entrance. This hotel is perfect if you need a vacation away from home or if you are touring/visiting MSU. We loved the Beer Garden in the back of the hotel. It was the perfect place to relax, enjoy a cocktail or dinner and watch the sun set. Our rooms were extremely clean and well prepared for our two night visit. We look forward to returning soon. We also loved meeting Sam!

Best thing to do would be to call them and ask.
tv shows are filmed months in advance and take time to edit and polish in order for them to air, not to mention they can rearrange episodes depending on story arcs for the season. It could very well be that they filmed it earlier in 2011 or 2012, the episode got bumped and moved to a different season or that the editing time and season air date made it have an extended time period between shooting and premiere.
