We usually love this hotel but our stay last week was awful. The room smelled so musty! The excuse was that the air had been off. I was told they would have to check if there was availability to change rooms.... I recommend you check before carting your luggage. In the middle of the night, barefoot, I realized even the carpet was damp. The smell never went away!

I have only been to Oxford once, and just for a single night, so I am far from an expert. But it seems fair to generalize that the heart of the town is the lovely square -- the courthouse surrounded by two story buildings, many with verandas, that overlook the historic square. We didn't have a chance to do any shopping, but the shops looked intriguing. And I have it on authority that the bookstore there is top-rate. All that being said, Chancellors House is a three-year-old hotel that is a very short walk from the Square. So the location is perfect. It's a modern hotel crossed with a more traditional decor. They have a roomy combined bar and dining area -- this is nice because it actually gives the restaurant more of a real restaurant feel rather than feeling like a hotel room that serves food. In fact, the afternoon we arrived the bar was very busy with at least one outside group and I think quite a few people not staying at the hotel who were there for the bar and the outdoor patio. Upstairs the rooms are spacious and comfortable. We had room 313 which was a large room, with an enormous open bathroom and clawfoot tub and separate shower. My favorite area of the hotel was the Faulkner Den -- a library area on the ground floor with a nice gas fireplace that they had going as it was a rainy evening when were there. They don't have a gym on site. But they do offer complimentary (but you should tip) van service to a nearby country club where they have full gym and pool privileges. The van ride is about 10-15 minutes each way. The gym is new, large and has lots of equipment. So on the on hand it is preferable to what most hotels offer in their own gyms. On the other hand it's not terribly convenient to have to transport back and forth to the gym. Finally, the front desk really aims to please. The staff is very friendly and helpful, provided a map of the University for us, directions to running paths that are near the hotel, recommendations for breakfast and perhaps more importantly, came after us with all of the things we forgot in our rooms! They called me immediately when the maid service found my phone charger. And our friend had left two dress shirts in his room. So we were very grateful for their extra consideration.

Excellent stay at Chancellor’s House. Check in was easy and friendly. The room was nice and clean and the bed was very comfortable. There is valet parking and the attendants were also very friendly. The property is in a great location off the town square where there are shops and several good restaurants. Highly recommend.

Had an excellent stay at Chancellor’s house. Staff was all very friendly and accommodating. Restaurant was really good. Food and service were both great for dinner and breakfast. The room was very nice as well. Most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept in for a long time. Can’t think of a single negative to my stay. Highly recommend.
