I booked Cabin 9 for the 8 family members that came to the cabin. We were there for 4 wonderful days, the cabin was amazing, very clean and well outfitted. I can't possibly imagine having a better time. We rented the pontoon for the entire time as well, definitely a smart move. We plan to make this a yearly event.

The lake is heavily populated, but rather pretty, but the resort is heavily populated and not. They have a huge amount of RVs next to every cabin, so this is not a peaceful vacation place. Cabins are large, beds are good, but dirty! The little things....like the half full bucket of stinky cigarette butts outside our deck door really are easy to fix, but yuck. The rental pontoons work, but are exceptionally worn out. Super small beach...

Response from Dave L, Owner at Shady Rest Resort
Responded Jul 10, 2018
Thank you for your review and staying with us. We are sorry that you were disappointed in your stay. We try to have everything clean by the time our guests arrive. By missing something indicates we still can improve and will make the appropriate changes. Nearly all our beds are new and the bedding changed with each turn over. You may have come during the 4th of July week. That happened to be an exceptionally busy week on the lake with the 4th landing on a Wednesday. Weekends can also be busy, it's a very popular lake. During the weekdays it's normally much quieter, that's common with most lakes. We do offer some campsites that are close to a few of the cabins, but far enough away to offer good space for both. They are very popular with guests who want a cabin and their friends or family have an RV who can be conveniently close to each other. We have made a lot of changes over the past 40 years and we are constantly working on improving the resort every way we can.

The summer of 2016 was the second year we have had our RV on a seasonal lot. The place is quiet and peaceful. The staff is friendly and helpful. The fishing is very good. The sunsets are spectacular. The seasonal RV members are like one big family.

One day back and I wish we were still there! This is a family operated business and they take great pride in their little piece of heaven. My husband and I have stayed in a few resorts and this one has to be the best by far. We stayed in cabin #5 - the cabin was very clean with all the comforts of home. The kitchen was well stocked with all the pots and pans you need. They even had an electric skillet (who has that). I was wishing I knew that and brought syrup so we could have had some french toast. Thanks for the memorable stay!

We just returned from our first week-long family vacation at Shady Rest Resort and it was marvelous! We had 4 adults, an 8 yr old, a 7 yr old and a 7 week old and found plenty to do and lasting memories to be made. The cabin was right on the lake and fit our needs for the most part (next time we will get one with a tub). The kids spent hours fishing off the dock and swimming. We rented a pontoon for an evening and had planned to do it a second time but the weather didn't cooperate. The staff/family that runs the resort are very friendly and accommodating. We are excited that we have already re-booked for next year. This was our Christmas present to our kids and grandkids and we are happy to have found a place that met all of our expectations!

First time at this resort. Exceeded all expectations as a clean family friendly resort. Lucked out in finding this Minnesota gem! Classic family run resort. Clean cabins, nice dock and swimming area and great staff. Booked again for next year.

We have been going to Shady Rest Resort since 2004. It started out for one week but now is up to two & one-half weeks. Love the nice shaded sites and great fishing. We have 5 camping couples and one family in a cabin. The camp ground and cabins are really clean and the staff is very friendly. Our kids come up for a few days with their camper and just love it. Nice swimming for grandkids and us older folks. Great places to spend some time in the summer!

Once again we choose Shady Rest. This time we came up on Labor Day Weekend to get in a quick break with the kids before school starts. Very nice cabins, very clean, the kitchens had most of what we needed to prepare meals for our stay. Not a lot of counter space but good storage. The pots and pans were in good shape. The beds were comfortable and clean. The cabin overlooked the lake and we enjoyed a great sunset each night. We also had our own fire pit which was nice. The staff was very friendly and we heard plenty of fish stories. We didn't fish but we saw some pretty nice catches come in. The beach was sandy and the lake very clean. The swim raft was the favorite hang out. My wife and I love tennis and it was nice to have that available. The game room was nice but a bit old. It had a pool table, pac man, some other video games and an air hockey table that got plenty of use. It was a holiday weekend so I expected a lot of people and there were but it never got crazy noisy like some other places. Most people were pretty quiet by the time we were ready for bed. I highly recommend Shady Rest and we'll be back.

I am returning next summer for a week in July. My parents have been coming and staying at Shady Rest for 14 years. When we first started coming we only needed 1 cabin but now we are up to 3. The resort is a family owned resort and they have always been wonderful to us. As a child, I spent most of the day at the beach or in the boat fishing with my dad and brother. This year I'm bringing my boy friend and his son to the resort. They've never been fishing or to a resort before so they can hardly wait. The cabins have always been clean, well kept up, wonderfully positioned overlooking the lake. The campfire by the cabin was always a favorite. My brother plays the guitar which made the whole experience perfect. The lake is very clean and clear. The beach has lots of sand however there are smaller rocks further out. It doesn't get too deep by the swim raft so there was no diving off of it. I learned to ski on the lake and look forward to it this next summer. There is also a nice game room for the kids which may be a bit older but the kids love it. They don't really have many organized activities except a hay ride once or twice a week so we do keep ourselves busy by planning things to do, The one thing that stands out is how friendly everyone is, and not just the people working there. The owners always stop and visit, and even the campers who are there for the whole summer are great to be around. Many of those campers remember us over the years and have become friends. Overall I would highly recommend the resort

My family has been coming to this resort for years (cabin, tenting, and a long time ago a seasonal rental mobile home). The resort offers plenty of things to do - playground, shuffleboard, basketball, tennis, horseshoes, volleyball (all equipment available free of charge) - along with lake activities such as swimming (beach with sun deck) and fishing (boat rentals - both pontoon and aluminum 14' fishing). The lake is sand bottom, clear, and has many different fish (perch, walleye, northern, sunny, bass). The resort also has a small store and game room with billards table, video games. Regarding the camping, the site we had was spacious with a fire pit and picnic table. The table's support frame was a bit bent, so the table rocked back and forth. However, it was sturdy enough to sit and eat. The bonfire was great (wood available to purchase)... and who doesn't love a roasted marshmallow or smore? It was quiet at night (quiet hours 10 pm to 8 am). As for the bathhouse, it left much to be desired. It was likely built in the late 1970s/early 1980s and hasn't been updated. There were spider webs in the corners, and be sure to bring shower shoes. While the decor is dated, all of the fixtures worked (two flush toilets, two bathroom sinks, two showers). Compared to the pit toilets in some state campgrounds, I prefer coming here. Overall, it was a fun weekend, and our sons have asked to come back.
