Perched atop a hill, Castello Di Velona captivates guests with its breathtaking Tuscan views, often described as legendary. The tranquil luxury of the hotel resonates through its elegant rooms, complete with live music, despite some design inconsistencies. While the service generally receives high marks for its professionalism and attentiveness, there have been occasional mentions of slower service. Cleanliness is a standout feature, with travelers commending the immaculate and well-appointed rooms. The hotel's thermal pools and luxurious amenities are celebrated, although opinions on value diverge, with some guests considering the costs for food and beverages steep.

I truly love Castello di Velona! I've been here twice now and it still makes me feel like I'm in one of the most beautiful castles in the world, surrounded by heavenly scenery, the best Italian food there is and excellent service.
There's no better way to describe this gem with the stunningly beautiful location on a hill south of Montalcino. The view from just about everywhere in the castle is also to die for and especially so if you stay in one of the larger terrace suites. Never have I felt so relaxed while just enjoying the Tuscan hills as far as one's eyes can reach from my own terrace.... it makes you relax and dream to the extend that it almost feel spiritual.
The food is so good, well prepared and the tiramisu is the best in the world! The tiramisu is prepared by your table and is so delicious and fluffy that one can only dream of! Breakfast is also really good with a large selection and always served by the table. The resort offers half board with an impressive dine-around concept where you can also dine at other Michelin starred restaurants in the local area. Where else is that even possible? It's well worth the money to take advantage of this.
The pool area... an experience in itself and so unique! Natural thermal water and yes again, that view....
The spa is also lovely and this time I had a massage, which was one of the best I ever had.
The service is top notch all over this resort and attention to detail comes naturally here. You get the best service from even before deciding to book (always book direct to get the best rates), upon arrival, during your stay and until you leave,
Rooms are beautifully decorated and the combination of medieval and modern decor is tastefully done.
I just got back home but can't wait to go back to my castle.

We have been here several times before. We love it.

This is a unique hotel spa that is isolated and perched on top of a hill overlooking historic UNESCO views. Our UNESCO suite is large and private with a living area, king bed, double sink, shower and separate tub with spa water. Private patio overlooking gorgeous sunsets.

The service staff, concierge and manager make every effort to keep us happy. That’s why we keep returning.

The food at dinner is delicious albeit a bit high priced and breakfast includes a huge variety of everything you could imagine. The chef will accommodate your requests as well. The sommelier is passionate, friendly and approachable and always very helpful in offering suggestions.

This year, we went to two close by (5 minute drive) highly acclaimed wineries that make Brunello. The wine and olive oil made at Castello di Velona is also excellent.

We will likely be back again next year.

We’ve been here before and love it. It’s quiet, peaceful and beautiful. A full panoramic 360 degree view of historic Tuscany in all its glory engulfs this centuries old castle. The hot spas and pool are invigorating and therapeutic. The pace is laid back and totally calming. The pandemic has made it less busy and frenetic.

The hotel is just a stones throw away from several of the best Brunello wineries and we spent several days visiting those close by. The staff is helpful with selections, both big and small wineries.

We also enjoyed an extensive wine tasting with the resident wine maker at Castillo de Velona and it was very educational, informative and mostly just plain fun.

The entire service staff works hard with a goal to please. Hotel staff wears masks and guest do while inside. Most of the hotel is open air which is safer as well. The chief concierge was at our service at all times and very friendly and great at handling any
minor issues quickly.

The food is good (homemade pici melted with pecorino made in a flamed cheese wheel and all the seafood and grilled vegetables were delicious), and the chef is flexible allowing orders off the menu which is nice for dieting and making selections more approachable.

Breakfast is not buffet right now due to the virus, and yet better with an extensive a la carte menu: assorted eggs, fresh sliced salmon, pastries, fruit bowls, juices, and coffees. All delicious, freshly prepared and part of the daily room and breakfast plan.

Restaurant menu prices for dinner are very expensive and there’s a 10% restaurant service markup and 20% for room service.
The wine list is navigable with a lot of wines in the e50-70 range if you are not drinking Brunello which is much higher. The sommelier was very helpful in making interesting and delicious bottle selections at a reasonable price. The pool bar restaurant was wonderful too making pizza and shrimp and salad dishes we enjoyed.

Hopefully, when we come back again, the pandemic will be a thing of the past. Our stay here made us forget about all the craziness going on in the world right now.

Dear steveseldo, thank you for your accurate and positive review! Thank you also for the beautiful words used to describe our 1000 years old location, our service and our Team. Compliance with the pandemic containment measures are our priority. The wide spaces and the fresh air that passes constantly in the common areas helps us to keep our castle a covid free oasis. Breakfast, as you rightly noted, is served and boasts a menu with dozens of dry pastry products, fresh fruit and vegetables, salmon, caviar, eggs and of course italian caffé, cappuccino...! We are happy that you enjoyed our wines and the wisdom of our Sommelier Serena. We look forward to welcoming you again on another date. Greetings from the sunny side of Tuscany

My wife and I are big into wine, and the Montalcino area has been a dream of ours since our first glass of Brunello. When it came time to book our honeymoon, I could only think of one place. This was the only time we could EVER go visit the Tuscan countryside. We booked it all for the end of June 2020, but unfortunately COVID-19 made it impossible to travel.

We had to push our honeymoon/reception back a full year as a result. Unfortunately, the hotel refused to simply move our reservation to the following year (everything else was moved to July 2021). They offered a 50% credit if we booked by June 2021. The room rate was high when we booked it, but to pay another 50% on top was impractical (that would equate to USD 950/night). In addition, we aren't sure whether Italy will allow US citizens to travel there by June 2021, and I'm unwilling to lose more money.

It seems we donated our hard earned money, which we wanted to use to celebrate our marriage, to this hotel which had zero sympathy. The money they took will never be recovered, and our dream is over.

Considering the extremely high charge for staying here ($2,100 /night for 3 people half -board) I was surprised that they wanted to charge us $9 per bottle of still water to be brought to the room, plus service charge, After a discussion this charge was omitted. However the same thing happened 2 days later . The coffee maker was leaking water all over the floor. There were only 2 coffee cups , with three people in the suite. We called and apparently someone checked the coffee maker. The same thing happened the next day, with water all over the floor.
When we checked in at reception, standing at the counter, with no one else checking in,we were ignored for about 30 minutes. No eye contact. When we entered the room we found someone's dirty sock on the living room floor.
Dinner was included but extremely average quality. About the same quality as at the deli counter at a Whole Foods grocery store. Perhaps similar to Applebees. Very odd vibe with staff hovering around and interrupting our conversation every 10 minutes to ask " Is everything OK?" But of course they did lift the chrome plate covers off the plates at the same time. Didn't this go out of date about 40 years ago ?
At the pool area we found black mold on the reclining chairs. Also around the pool itself.
We did have lunch at Castello Banfi , near by , and wish we had stayed there.

Dear Richard B, Thank you for taking the time for sharing your experience at Castello di Velona, The prices, in line with the other structures of the same level, of the drinks and services are displayed both on the menus and in the QR codes found throughout the castle. Room service certainly has an added value as you can enjoy your drink sitting on the terrace overlooking the incomparable beauty of UNESCO heritage Hills. You refused to sign the order for your drink and elegantly we have not charged the amount consumed. It makes us very strange that you found a dirty sock in your living room (which is the brightest spot in the room) as the rooms are cleaned by our cleaning team and scrupulously double checked by the Housekeeper. You also tell us that our staff did not consider you but at the same time you complain that they are too intrusive ... However we regret that your stay did not live up to your expectations. Our director remains at your complete disposal for any clarification as he was throughout your stay at the Castle. A cordial greeting from the beautiful Montalcino

My husband and I stayed here recently as part of our honeymoon road trip around northern Italy.

Whilst the hotel itself, room and views were really beautiful/well kept and the staff were very friendly, we felt that the cost of food and drink at the hotel put a real dampener on the experience.

We are both professionals with well paid jobs in the UK, have stayed in many 5* hotels previously. The prices were just astronomical here. €8 euros for a bottle of water, €18 for an aperol spritz, €19 euros for a glass of rose and €176 euros for a one x “catch of the day” sea bass. PLUS the 20% service charge on all of the above. These are much higher costs than what you would find in any other 5* hotels in any major cities worldwide.

There is just no need to charge these crazy prices when you’re already spending a good amount of money to stay at this resort. I can see that a number of other reviews for this resort say the same thing, that the cost of food and drink is just too high. There must therefore be some truth to this if a number of people from all over the world are saying the same. Perhaps if you reduced your prices significantly your reviews and trip advisor rating would be much higher. The prices need to be much more reasonable. We stayed in a number of other much cheaper places in Tuscany which offered a much better service and were still absolutely beautiful..

The good thing about the hotel was that the pool use and spa use was included, which we weren’t sure about at the time of booking.

I stayed at the hotel for 4 days. While I found the hotel to be incredibly beautiful and relaxing, I also found it to be incredibly overpriced. 9 Euros for a Coke is ridiculous!!! I also found the pool to be suprisingly not clean. It was an all white pool but everything was stained green. I then stayed at the Grand Hotel Royal in Sorrento and it had the cleanest pool I have ever seen.
A major shortcoming is that the hotel is a 20 minute drive to Montelcino, and if you have no car,you are stuck. A hotel of this caliber to not have a shuttle van to take people into town is inexcusable. And while I understand that the week I was there was a holiday week for Italians, the price the hotel charged for a taxi was astronomical!!! I paid 250 Euros to go to dinner in a town that was literally 15 minutes away.

That being said,I need to make a special mention of the Chief Concierge,Franco Gozzi. I am an experienced traveler of over 40 years who frequently uses the services of a concierge when I’m in need of help. I can honestly say that Franco went way above and beyond what any concierge has done for me. His professionalism, expertise, kindness, and empathy is unequaled to any other concierge I have dealt with. His willingness to solve what seemed to be an insurmountable problem, and his determination in doing so,was really the reason that my stay at the hotel turned out to be a wonderful experience. I can honestly say that if it were not for Franco, my stay would have been somewhat miserable. He literally made my stay there a total pleasure. I can never thank him enough for all that he did. He is truly a gem and he sets the standards for what a concierge should be.

Thank you Franco!!!!!!!!!

Dear scottg11, Thank you for your time dedicated to share with us your experience. We are sorry that the quality of our swimming pool did not live up to your expectations. Probably the swimming pool of the Sorrento structure you are talking about is filled with normal water while that of our castle is thermal and as such the minerals inside sometimes alter the normal light color of the travertine. If you send us the invoice for your transfer, we will take care to double check as the price indicated does not correspond to our price list. Franco is our spearhead of the Conciergerie. His great experience makes him irreplaceable, incomparable and made him deserve the Clefs d'Or. It will be a great pleasure for us to share your nice words and this commendation with him. Greetings from Montalcino

More by accident we came across this beautiful place on top of a mountain close to Montalcino. Wonderfully designed building to new glory with stunning views and excellent restaurant choices. The suite rooms are nice and spacious and the bathrooms are in good working conditions.
Only three suggestions:
1. Please get a new interior designer for the large entrance hall as we have rarely seen a more hideously and tasteless designed room anywhere.
2. It is always a great idea to have a nice, smiling face greeting guest at the reception. From the answer at the gate to please open the door to the driveway to almost any question being either misunderstood or intentionally ignored or answered with something irrelevant or unrelated to the question. There need to be a different team spirit and more nice people hired for the reception desk ( while … to make this clear… everybody else was super nice).
3. I have rarely seen in modern times a place with too many managers and senior managers. To a degree that the rest of the staff is obviously micro- managed and not allowed to make any decisions. Even so simple tasks of finding a quite place for a guest to make a call need management involvement. And this not enough, the senior managers seem to always be first. I have never experienced that while the waiter is talking to us the senior managers approaches him in a rather rude way and the next minutes are between the waiter and the senior manager with us getting lost in between.
Long story short … easy things to fix to get a 5 star rating. Am I hopeful … not sure?

We just finished our week long stay at Castello di Velona and it was truly amazing. We have travelled a lot and we were celebrating our 30th anniversary so I wanted a special place to stay. It exceeded my expectations at every step. The most important things to me are the people, the food and the place and they excelled at each.
The people stand out for me first of all. The management made a concerted effort to ensure our stay was perfect. The waitress in the Brunello fine dinning restaurant, the sommelier, and the waiter for breakfast and by the pool were great characters that improved the dinning experiences. I wish I remembered their names. Even the front desk and cleaners were great to deal with.
The food at every meal was exceptional. The dinner at the fine dinning restaurant was most memorable. I had a 7 course journey around the culinary world. My wife had a 5 course journey of local food coming down the mountainside. The waitress explained so much about each course which made it even better. Each course was amazing, especially with the wine pairing for each course. The chef came out and spoke to us as well which only added to the amazing night. The food at the Settimo Senso restaurant was fantastic each time we ate there. We went into Siena one day and ate at the top rated restaurant there, it was good but paled in comparison to what we had eaten at the Settimo Senso. Even eating by the pool was great. I had the club sandwich several times because it was the best I have had. How do you make a sandwich better? The bread was soft yet crispy, tomatoes flavourful and meat excellent! Some have complained the food is expensive but it is not when you consider what you are eating, it is more than worth it.
The location of the castle on the top of a hill overlooking the valleys was breathtaking. Videos and pictures do not do it justice. When we pulled up in the car I had to take pictures from the parking lot! The naturally fed pools are wonderful, with the temperature perfect. My back loved the deeper pool, just to walk about in. The lobby is a great room to sit, relax and read. The views from Settimo Senso were so beautiful, with a full view of the valleys as the sun set.
I can’t say enough about the place, hope to come back. I will not forget it. Thanks for making my anniversary better than I could hope for.

We came on a dual couples trip and it was fantastic! We shared a room with no problem it was plenty big for all 4 of us and we were properly taken care of whenever we needed towels, room services or to set up any kind of amenity such as the restraunt. We loved the fact that the wifi was by far some of the wifi was some of the fasted we have experienced in the area as well! We spent plenty of time relaxing outside in the famous thermal pools, and we had fun going in and out of the pool cutout to enjoy some indoor time to get away from the suns heat. We were served some of the best cocktails we've ever experienced, the waiter also said they were made from seasonal fruits which explains why they were so good. In the mornings we enjoyed having breakfast in our private terrace because we could not get enough of the views! Sunset and sunrise here is truly something that everyone should expirence atleast once in their lifetime. During the evening we spent our time in the restraunt having some of the best aged meats, the T-Bones steak was amazing! The wine we had we absolutely top tier and not to mention it came directly from the winery itself. We had our share of red wine, white wine, and some white sparkling wine.
