#2 of 6 B&Bs / Inns in Two Harbors
Northern Rail Traincar Inn is a "Unique Hotel with a B&B Feel"! Nestled in the woods our accommodations provide a relaxing northern getaway 1/2 mile from the north shore of Lake Superior. There are 14 rooms in 7 boxcars (1/2 car each) called Porter and Porter w/Sofa rooms and there are 3 full car Suites (there are 10 cars total). We have several themes for our rooms: Oriental (inspired by the Asian influence of the Orient Express) Safari (Inspired by the Safari trains of the early 1900's) Victorian (Inspired by the era of train travel) Northwoods rooms for something different: Fishing, Bear, Golf & Lighthouse. From the charming platform hallway to the unique rooms and the peaceful surroundings Northern Rail appeals to anyone looking for a unique experience!

We stayed at the Northern Rail Traincar Inn 2 nights. We would stay again. The beds are good. Breakfast was limited due to Covid but adequate. Rooms are quiet and comfortable. Rooms are clean. The location allowed us to get to many north shore sites with little trouble. Service was outstanding.

Booked 2 rooms anticipating unique furnishings in keeping with the exterior railroad cars. But interiors are drywall walls with very ordinary furnishings. Pricey at $170 per night per room. Have stayed elsewhere for less that was more interesting. Breakfast was packaged food one could get at a convenience store.

Response from Cyndi Ryder, General Manager at Northern Rail Traincar Inn

We are so sorry that you were disappointed in your stay with us. As you can tell by our many other reviews yours is not the typical response that we get. It is hard to manage your expectations when you don't know what the intent and reasons are for things being the way they are. Prior to the recent changes due to COVID and social distancing we would have been happy to sit and chat with you and our other guests and answer all of the usual questions. There used to be information books in every room with all sorts of information about the hotel and the area. There was a photo album in the lobby with construction pictures. All of that has been put away. Even with using page protectors we can't possibly sanitize every page between guests. We have mounted a few of the info pages on the back of the room doors in an easy to sanitize manner. We have felt that our website and our COVID page explained things pretty clearly but maybe we should re-visit that. Sheet rock was required for several reasons including building codes and fire codes as well as to facilitate insulating the boxcars (we are open year-round). The ceilings were left unfinished in their original state in most of the rooms to remind you that you are, indeed, in a train boxcar. A couple of ceilings were painted due to graffiti that was not exactly family friendly! The original owner chose the themes of the rooms based on a somewhat loose connection to rail travel. The Victorian era of train travel, the Orient Express, Safari trains and a few north woods themes for good measure. Most of the rooms have dark rich wood toned furniture with many having wicker storage baskets for drawers. Most of the lamps are stained glass with some rooms having specific themed specialty lamps notably in the Fishing, Safari, Lighthouse, Moose and Bear rooms. All of the tapestry, brocade and quilted themed bedding has been removed along with all of the extra decorative pillows on the beds, chairs and sofas in order to protect guests. We have replaced the top of the bed with an easily laundered sheeting and no need for dry cleaning. As for breakfast - we are doing exactly what we are allowed to do. Believe us when we say we really wish we could go back to our normal self-serve buffet style breakfast. The rules, however, do not allow for any self-serve buffet style meals of any kind, anywhere. We are lucky that they let us offer the coffee/tea/hot cocoa/water station. It has made us the hand sanitizer police but at least we can still provide the service. When things changed we thought (and hoped) that we were dealing with short term changes and we knew that we were facing an uncertain business future. Clearly this is not short term and we are going to have to make more permanent (and more expensive) changes. We have been toying with the idea of a total re-vamp and we might do that over the winter (slow) season - depending on finances of course. If you have some ideas on unique furnishings I am certainly open to suggestions - just give me a call! Again, we are so sorry you were disappointed. Hopefully you will check back with us next summer and see what we have done! Jeff and Cyndi

We had a full rail car room, Queen Safari (Rm 207). Lots of room. Sitting area was separated from the bedroom. Bed was comfortable! Room was spotless. Loved the idea and the way they connected the cars, including the hallway.

The owners of this place are very nice. They told us we were able to get dvds from the lobby and take them to our rooms to watch. We didn't use this option, but appreciated the offer. They also had breakfast packed for you to go based on a menu you submitted. I wasn't sure what to expect for room size(we did 1/2 car with a queen bed), but they were ample, and actual the bathrooms were larger than I expected. The sheets on the bed were the softest sheets I have EVER slept on. I don't ever think about things like that, but this is a noticeable difference than the norm. We were only there for one night, so didn't explore the property or the lobby, but it looked like it would be a place you could enjoy. There was a bit of noise on the hallway walkway, but it was no different than a chain hotel when people are walking down the hall. I would go back here again if we were in the area.

This place was awesome. It was unique and so well done. The owners were so nice an it is obvious they love this place. We had a half traincar with two beds and it was perfect for mom dad and two teens. They had movies for borrowing and a nice breakfast. It’s also a perfect location for all the local sites.
