We chose to stay at the Archer House when visiting Carleton based on its locatio and the fact that it is in an old building rather than a cookie cutter chain. It delivered on both of those fronts. It couldn't be more convenient to campus or the main street of Northfield. It goes downhill from there. The hallways are in...

Had a very large two-bed room overlooking the Cannon River. Heater kept the room toasty warm. Hotel has real character--not like cookie-cutter interchangeable post-war hotel chains--down to the "drop-in-any-mailbox" actual room keys (not key cards). There's a minimalist 24-hour exercise room w/one apiece of treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bike. Breakfast in the Tavern restaurant on the ground floor was inexpensive...

This was our first trip to Northfield. We found the hotel's history to be interesting and enjoyed the shops and restaurants attached. The rooms vary in size and charm. If you are looking for special ambiance, ask when making your reservation about the charm and decor of your room. We walked the hallway when cleaning was going on and got...

Fist time stay. Traveling with my Dad from Minneapolis to visit family for Thanksgiving. Reserved an executive room with two queen beds on 3rd floor. Room had a step down to bathroom which presented a bit of a challenge for my 88 year old Dad. Also the bed height was unusually tall which again presented challenges for getting in and...

We stayed here while visiting Carleton College with our daughter. The hotel is very close to campus and its Division Street location allowed us to explore this charming town with ease. Lots of adorable shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and even good cupcakes. The river is beautiful too! So much charm! Our room was spacious--big comfy beds, big bathroom, and a...

Wonderfully friendly people; quaint setting on a delightful street in Northfield and the most comfortable beds! The Indian restaurant just off the lobby offered a great night's dinner. We had a lovely stay while we were touring colleges in Northfield.

We travel a lot ...but the Archer House rented us the worst room ever for $130 last night ...Old double bed barely fit in room with a foot to spare on each side. Louvered shutter was bathroom door. The small old fashioned tub had a pipe shower but shower head had all inner parts removed and water just came out...

We stayed 1 night in 309 which was a large 2 room, 1 bath accommodation. We booked very last minute on a Saturday night. Very impressed. It was so quiet in our rooms. The tavern on the lobby floor was quaint. Had live music. If u sit out on the bars deck, u can hear/see the band from the neighboring...

I am writing this from the hotel room now. We stayed here the past two nights in the executive room which is one of the 2 bedroom suites. When I booked it I was taken back by how much it cost. I only did it because this hotel had the best reviews and I wanted to the 2 bedrooms since...

This place is an old historic building that has seen better days. It has been updated in some cosmetic ways compared to what it was in its past life as the Stuart Hotel, but the photos suggest a lot more remodeling than has actually occurred. I am amazed it meets fire code--check out the wiring situation in the place. It...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Archer House River Inn occupies more than a central location in Northfield. For generations of guests and locals, it IS Northfield - a geographical and architectural landmark, a host to history for nearly 140 years, and an exemplar of the town's spirit of hospitality. Built in the French Second Empire style, the four-story red brick building is grand in design, rich in character, and impressive in its amenities - which include two full-service restaurants, a coffee shop, riverside lounge, conference space and more. Yet with just 36 rooms, no two of which are identical, the inn is intimate in scale and unique in feel. The Archer House also boasts the city's best location, straddling the town's main thoroughfare and the Cannon River. Beyond its prominent setting and venerable history, something else makes the Archer House special: a spirit reflected by the staff's pride in upholding a 140-year legacy of caring for guests, and the ownership's loving stewardship of a property that embodies the heart and soul of Northfield. ... more   less
