The front desk staff is unhelpful. After a long day of travel, we waited for what seemed like at least half an hour to check in because the room we booked and prepaid for directly through the hotel website was “unavailable”. The front desk staff didn’t do anything to remedy the situation and were not accommodating. I had mentioned how we had been traveling for hours and the staff member even got snippy and said “the flight from your destination isn’t that long”. I really had to explain that the duration of a flight doesn’t include other travel time. It was incredible. The hotel is under construction or as the front desk staff will tell you “under maintenance” and this was not disclosed on their website. On our last morning at the hotel, they **shut the water off** in our room (and probably many other rooms) without notice! P.S. they are NOT taking any Covid precautions.

This was my first hotel stay since the start of the pandemic, and I chose this hotel based on the view since I expected to spend a lot of time in my room. I also decided to pay more for a “cool corner” room. I know hotel rooms aren’t as nice in person as they look online, but I felt a little duped by the photo of a gorgeous main room with a sweep of windows, when in reality my sweep of windows was in the bathroom! It was the most beautiful view from a toilet I may ever have, but that wasn’t why I ponied up $40 more per night. That being said, the view from up high is great and well worth it (as long as you’re not expecting more). I saw a helicopter take off from HCMC and watched the moon sail by on a perfectly clear night. I wanted to give the hotel a higher rating because I feel like any hospitality staff are stretched thin right now, and W staff were helpful and polite even when I was frustrated. But there were a lot of little issues that added up, and I was only there for one night. Those include: - Hot water but almost no cold water. This was the biggest inconvenience. I couldn’t figure out why my shower only seemed to have hot or scalding water, and I had to have someone come look at it and tell me to leave it running for 5-10 minutes to get it to cool down. That wasn’t an exaggeration, and it was the same for the tap. I ended up filling all the glasses in the room and leaving them on the counter overnight so I could have something cool to drink in the morning. - Noise. The door provides no sound protection from the hallway, and the vroom from elevators revving up and down is constant. I didn’t mind it so much, but it was noticeable. I was more bothered by the fridge that I had to unplug to stop the high pitched whine. - Glitches checking in and out. First I was put in the wrong room type, which they did fix but initially questioned me. On the morning I left, I discovered they deactivate keys before the checkout time, so I had to go down and up again just to pop in and grab my suitcase. - Hard bed. Some people like a hard bed, but I’m not one of them! YMMV. There are some good things. The building is lovely, and in better times I’m sure I’d enjoy hanging out in the “living room” while having a cocktail or two. I also appreciated the free access to the viewing deck, as well as the view from my room. Food service was surprisingly delicious, and they graciously helped me get a little bite when I missed the breakfast deadline. Overall, if I’d ended up here by chance as a business traveler, I’d probably be more pleased. But since I was so focused on my in-room experience, I just didn’t get to relax and gaze across a vista of the city the way I expected to do.

As with many other hotels, the Foshay is suffering from the effects of Covid as well as other issues called indifference. While we were there, there was no accessibility to the highly anticipated upper levels of the hotel. Despite all of the issues involved, we did enjoy a great weekend.

This historic hotel has a great location in downtown Minneapolis. That's the best that can be said. The downsides start with parking. The valet doesn't show up most of the time. The digital valet system was mostly inoperable. And this was with a nightly cost of $49 for parking. During the pandemic, most hotels have had a problem getting competent front desk staff. The W Minneapolis is no different. Most of the staff seemed indifferent. I had to ask several times to get things fixed in the room. Upon checking in, the front desk attendant had no idea how the bicycle rentals worked. He couldn't be bothered with answering questions about the internet. The room (Luxury Marvelous Suite) was quite spacious. But the one phone in the room didn't work. The water in the shower was temperamental at best (hot, cold, hot, cold, hot...). There was no dresser or any place to unpack other than a small closet. Some of the outlets did not work. The dining area had absolutely no outlets at all. Dining was an issue. There is no place to have breakfast or lunch in the hotel. The bartender at the lobby bar was usually nowhere to be found. Overall, historic building in a central location. The reasons that you stay in an upscale hotel, however, were lacking.
