We chose the Lodge specifically because of it's location as we wanted a few days to go hiking and sit by the lake. We stayed in basecamp 5C. The gentleman who checked us in was very friendly and gave us information about the surrounding trails. He looked skeptical when I asked about the 8 mile out-and-back trail, probably because I'm not in the best shape. Funny thing is, we ended up hiking over 14 miles in 2 days! Looks can be deceiving!
Our room was very small but comfortable. The first night the couple in 5A a had a dog that was barking a lot so that was annoying but they left in the morning and a much quieter guest checked in. The folks in 5B were very quiet, 5D were very loud! So the noise level will depend on who you have as a neighbor. We were pleasantly surprised to see a mini fridge (plus microwave and coffee pot) in our room as we didn't know they would be there. There's no AC in this room, but windows that open on 2 sides and a fan, which we used. The bedding is extremely soft and there is a foam mattress topper that we thought was too hot. This of course will depend on your preference and is just our opinion. Shower was low flow and randomly got ice cold. The tub floor gets super slick so be careful! The lodge provides soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. There were plenty of fluffy towels in our room for the entire four days.
Rating four stars because there are some cosmetic things that could be changed like water stains on the ceiling and this crazy looking outlet that I have included a picture of. Also housekeeping does not come in every day due to the virus, so you have to go get items you might need yourself (or call down to the front desk to have them brought up), and our garbages were full by day 4. The price per night remained the same without this service. Other things I have mentioned earlier did not make me downgrade stars as it is a cabin and it's part of the experience! As it's in a park there are bugs and lots of birds chirping (one that was constant was a crazy sounding squawk-like an injured crow or something, very odd) We would definitely stay here again and would like to get a bigger cabin next time. It is in prime location for hiking, and you can just cross the highway and spent hours on the rocks at beautiful Lake Superior. Be sure to check out the Wildflower trail that goes around the property!

We stayed in a basecamp unit for 3 nights. Room was very clean which is appreciated. Nice linens, comfortable bed, plenty of soft towels. Staff was pleasant and helpful with suggestions. Grounds are well care for, and everything was in working order. We enjoyed that we had a deck and view of the grounds and lake in the distance. The room was very small which was ok. However, a luggage rack would have been nice. We could have used a small dining type table in the room instead of just end tables. A picnic table outside would have been nice too. We really enjoyed the restaurant being so close. We had breakfast and dinner- food was fresh, well prepared and priced accordingly. You place your order at a counter then they bring the food to you. Dining room atmosphere was the classic north wood lodge. We enjoyed our stay, but next time would like to try one of the larger cabins. The location of this resort is what it makes it ideal for hiking and exploring.

My husband and I have stayed here three years in a row in room 104. We love it because we get our own entrance to our room, for the amazing view of the lake, the hot tub, fireplace, mini-fridge, central location on the north shore, and that it is nestled right in the middle of Cascade State Park. I've also stayed in the main lodge in the late '90's and have fond memories of that stay.

The lodge is clean and well taken care of. Every year we notice upgrades in our room which tells me that they care. With COVID, they even added a HEPA filter to the room.

As a historic lodge, there are always going to be quirks like not enough three-prong outlets. That is just a comment, not a complaint.

We buy the firewood and restaurant vouchers with our reservation though I don't think there is any savings by pre-purchasing the breakfast vouchers. The wood was in our room when we got here, though, and they even added a paper bag of some newspapers which was a nice touch.

The restaurant next door is a great perk. Food and drink is just a short walk over a romantic footbridge away.

We love it here and plan on coming back each year as our tradition.

Took my son up here for 4 nights staying at 5D. We had a good time, the room has 2 beds and a kitchen. Even though its right in the middle of the place it feels secluded with the way the trees and windows are situated. Lots of easily accessible hiking and views. Your are practically on the SHT and several other trails for skiing or snowmobiling depending on what you are into.

It's definitely an older room and the bathroom needs updates for sure, but the kitchen made up for this. Bathroom fan crazy loud, needs replacement, tub drain doesn't work, vanity cracked, slight odors, etc. Also heat didn't seem to work in the living room but opening the doors to bedrooms compensated for that.

They should probably have more pictures on the website so you can better see what you are getting.

But to have a kitchen in the $140s range is pretty hard to find better than that; I would have given this place 4 stars but i just called about a lost item and they are sending it back to me so that is great news and great service so I'm giving them 5 for that.

We had our daughter’s wedding at Cascade Lodge and it was better than we could have ever hoped for. Between late planning (change of plans for pandemic), and new rules to be followed, Thom and Jelena made sure her day was perfect. They safely accommodated our guests and every detail was attended to by them and their amazing staff. The food was so delicious— due to the location and weekend events, most everyone ate 3 meals a day there and no one was tired of the menu— plenty to choose from! Not to mention the event food itself, it was perfect. Any detail we missed, Jelena was able to step in and take care of it. I highly recommend Cascade Lodge— for any event, a weekend away or just a bite to eat. You won’t be disappointed!

Another great North Shore hiking trip, based at Cascade Lodge. We have stayed at Cascade Lodge many times over the past 30 years, in different rooms and cabins and have loved it every time. This year we had one of the lodge rooms with a great Lake Superior view and we brought our friends who chose a cabin with a quiet location right on the creek. One of the best aspects of staying at the lodge is the on-site restaurant, with great pub food and local craft beers. It's an ideal casual place to enjoy after a day of hiking the many trails up and down the North Shore. The restaurant is in a separate building to the main lodge, which is ideal....it's only 30 seconds to walk to dinner, but the lodge rooms stay really quiet and peaceful. The owners and staff are always helpful and very friendly. Looking forward to our next visit!

Traveling during the summer from the Kansas City area to enjoy beautiful North country. This is a small family resort with cabins and lodge with a restaurant next door.

This lodge is next door to the Cascade falls, one of the most beautiful falls in the area.

The lodge has an old country charm with queen size beds, bathroom and small fridge.
If you happen to hit this lodge during a summer heat wave, only two rooms have air conditioning. Nights cool things down though.

Lots of things for kids to do as trails are nearby and they have board games billiards and a small playground.
Rooms have been updated and clean.
Okay my only negatives for this location is I wish they would sweep daily as people bring stuff in from the outside and that just seems to be not part of their to-do list.

They do not do daily housekeeping which is fine just don't leave me a basket that's requesting a tip for getting the room ready before I got there. Just frustrates me that everywhere I go now they're wanting a tip for doing the job they're supposed to do in the first place.

Would I stay there again absolutely yes!

We stayed two nights in the cabins at Cascade Lodge with our dog. The cabins were very and clean and we had a very nice stay. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had to change cabins due to availability when we booked and they let us move our stuff over early in the morning so we didn't have to drive with all that in our car. There is a restaurant on site that has great food and trail access to Cascade River State Park. The rocky beach across the street is an excellent place to watch sunrise over Lake Superior. We would definitely stay here again if visiting the area.

My family decided to take a trip up north and we were able to find a great deal at Cascade Lodge. We stayed in Cabin #7. They also have rooms on the main building. However, the we opted for the cabin and we were glad we did. The cabin had a great view and if you cross hwy 61 they have a picnic tables setup as part of the property. You could also climb down the stairs and you have an excellent view of Lake Superior. This is an ideal location that is between Cascade State Park and Tettegouche State Park. It is only 15 minutes from Grand Marais. We enjoyed going to cascade state park and hiking up to cascade falls. We also drove to Tettegouche State Park for a hike up to the falls. Cascade lodge also has a hiking trail going from the lodge to the Cascade Falls. Great place to stay and the staff was very friendly. They were very knowledgeable and helpful.

We stayed in one of the cabins for a week at the end of July. The location is excellent, across Highway 61 from Lake Superior and abutting Cascade River State Park. The front desk staff was helpful and there is a fairly good restaurant near the lodge. Cabins were clean. My only suggestion, not a strong one because the rates were very reasonable, is that the cabins need a bit of updating: paint outside, perhaps some newer furniture inside. Even given these suggestions, it was a nice place to stay and we - family of four - enjoyed our week very much.

No size restrictions that I'm aware of as we had a large German Shepherd in the room next to us, and a big soft Golden boy down the lane 😊 fees should be right on their website.

Is there any place to enjoy a campfire ( in the summer ) if you are staying in the lodge or base camp?
Answer from cascadelodge
Lutsen
Yes, there is a fire area right on the lakeshore that is available for all to use. Guests will also often make a small fire on the ledge rock also on the shore of the lake. We have a larger fire pit area off to the side of the property in the woods that guests often use, this is a little more protected from wind, but not on the lake shore. Definitely a few spots to have a fire. Thank you for thinking of us.
