This is one of two international standard hotels in Danzalangad Soum. It is the cheaper of the two, and it works fine; the other one is reputed to be frequented by mining people. Gobi Sands is on the main road into town, a distinctive circular-shaped building covered in glass which literally glitters from far away when catching the sunlight.

I had a standard king room which was are clean and comfortable, with the east facing room catching the morning sun which warmed the day. The bathroom had a nice shower and tub with piping hot water. There is wifi in the rooms which was patchy but good enough to download emails most days.

The restaurant on the 7th floor has a great view across to the mountains. Breakfast is a set menu with eggs, toast and noodles. The coffee is not good so if you need it, go to the lobby and ask for ready mix coffee from the fridge, surprisingly much better. For main meals, there is a good selection of Mongolian favorites plus pasta dishes which were reasonably priced. I noticed that locals come here for business and family dinners.

There are VIP rooms on the top floor. We held a small function in one of them one afternoon and the catering was done well, and business partners were pleased.

Service is just fine for Mongolia, friendly enough, and possible to get assistance if needed, although English not spoken well by anyone I met at the front desk.

A decent base for doing business in the Gobi region, for business functions, or as a stopover for weary travelers.

We stayed twice before and after our gobi desert adventures. They have good wifi, reasonably good food and hot water. English is not widely spoken, but the menus have pictures and the staff tries very hard to please guests.

This place was ok. Not terrible but not worth $50 per night, especially when it is cold in September and there is no hot water. I called reception multiple times and there is nothing they could do to help and noone here speaks English. Not sure if there is anywhere better - maybe this is as good as it gets. The showers in my ger camp were much better. The restaurant is ok but nothing special.

I stayed at Gobi Sands for one night. Hostel in Ulan Batar phoned night before to make reservation. It cost about equivalent of 40 USD for single which is amazingly good value for a hotel which is at least 3-star level. Large room with satellite TV. Located next to a bank and a few minutes walk to supermarkets.
I could not make reservation before the trip as only one or two staff seem to speak some English. I guess it depends whether an English-speaking is working at the time.

Large comfortable room. East facing morning sun. Conveniently located. 7th floor restaurant imposing views, English menu, cheaply priced. Other Restaurants
Most probably cheaper. AC comfortable. 6 TV channels with English if that is important.

We stayed here for one night before heading out to the Gobi Desert. This is probably the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at though not sure how other hotels in the area would compare (i.e. not sure if other hotels in the area would be any higher quality).

The electrical sockets were coming out of the wall so the plugs wouldn’t stay plugged in and we couldn’t charge our phones. The room was dirty and there were stains in the carpet. They only had enough towels and shampoo/body wash (the shampoo and body wash were the same thing) for one person even though it was indicated that 2 people would be staying. They didn’t provide real toilet paper. There was no AC. Not a great experience.

Traveller tourist Book advices this hôtel as the best of the city but....
Good size of the room with good beds
Good restaurant at 7th floor for an european food break
Employees do not speak english
Room outdated and not so clean
Shower without hot water
Electricity shut down so air conditionning
Unstable wifi
Night noise
Our advice is to prefer a good ger camp with nice accomodation and buy a local SIM card for web access

As there is not much choice for places to eat in Dalanzadgad, this was as good as anywhere to go for dinner. Situated on the top floor (7th), it offered some nice views of the sleepy desert town. The menu was extensive and covered both Mongolian and western. Good value for the money. No problems getting a table as we were the only two people there.

An unusual step for me on this trip was I let the local team make all the accommodation arrangements and this was how I ended up at the Gobi Sands Hotel on my first time in Dalanzadgad.

It's a unique architectural design that looks like a converted silo, being circular. Makes quite a statement in a town where the majority of buildings favour the squat and square design. Made for a nice atrium with a lot of natural light.

The disappointment started when we arrived to check in after driving all day from UB to be told that there is only hot water from 7-10pm and again at the same time in the morning. I had no problem with that except the hot water never came despite follow up assurances from the front desk that it just takes time to warm up. The 3 nights I was there, the only warm bathing I got was when I filled the sink with boiled water from the kettle and used a washer.

Being on a work trip, access to wifi is important. Again we were assured it was working on our floor but we didn't bother fighting this one so just went and sat in the restaurant where it was pretty good.

As the title says, the highlight for me was the breakfast set. I don't remember the name but it was a traditional Mongolian breakfast arrangement (or so the local staff with me said) and it was delicious.

All in all, if I didn't want hot water and internet I would have stayed in a Ger. This hotel may find it's feet eventually but it still has a way to go.
