Detailed Reviews
What an adorable place to stay while in Ely. Cute little house that has been set up similar to a bed and breakfast. There isn't a front desk, so check-in/check-out is personless, but was well setup and organized. Rooms were very clean, comfortable and quiet. We loved the living room and kitchen area and enjoyed chatting with some of the other guests while sitting by the fireplace. Bonus perk was the coffee and muffin at Northern Grounds. We will definitely stay here again when in Ely.

Three of us and two dogs stayed one night in Ely while we were up North to visit the Soudan Mine. This hotel was exactly what we needed. The accommodations are simple and rustic, not fancy, but worth it. We had the Crimson Room, at the front of the house, with direct access to the front porch, where we had a delightful evening drinking, talking, and watching cars and people go by. I think that room might have gotten a bit crowded if we had filled all five beds, but for three of us and the two dogs, it was perfect.
The self-check-in process was smooth, just pick up the instruction letter outside the back door and use the lock codes you were given by email. We didn't make too much use of the common kitchen or living room, since we were only there a night, but I can imagine they are very handy for longer stays and good places to hang out with other guests.
The location of the hotel is great for exploring the main drag in Ely. You're more on the edge of the central business district, but everything downtown is in walking distance from the hotel.
Parking was along the side of the hotel and off the alley in the back. We only had the one car, but I can imagine that when the hotel is full, the parking will be a little hard to come by.
No breakfast in the hotel, but we did take advantage of the free pastry and coffee at Northern Grounds coffee shop down the street for hotel guests. Honestly, if we were staying longer in Ely, I'd spend a lot more time in that coffee shop, too. It was legit and looked like it had a substantial nightlife wine menu, too.

+1
This was truly a home. I was by myself, but would be great for couples, families or rent out the whole house for a group!
Bed was super comfortable and the linens were soft. I have stayed in many large chain hotels and high end resorts and this was cleaner than most of them!
If I get back to Ely, which I truly hope I do, we will stay here! They include breakfast just down the street at Northern Grounds, which was so good I went back for lunch!

We stayed here 3 nights with our two dogs in the Crimson Room. We enjoyed the great location and walkability around Ely. Other than a dusty headboard the room was very clean. I also liked the convenient access with key codes. We were always able to park along the side of the building or at the top in the alley each day. The complimentary breakfast was nice but the staff at the cafe didn’t tell us until the last day that if we wanted something other than coffee or muffin, we could get a $5 credit towards something else.
The Crimson Room is much smaller than it looked online, and with our bags, shoes, and two dogs who slept on the floor, it was a real challenge. The private entrance was a nice feature with the dogs. One thing we learned and should have done is, if you're staying multiple nights and have dogs, you may want to ask for some kind of room service just to take care of the dog hair, sand and dirt that builds up.
Another thing about the Crimson Room is that it would have been nice to have a shelf or side table or something to set things on. The only place to lay anything down like a phone, keys, or a cup of coffee was on the headboard of the bed (which was very dusty). The room only has a bed, a loveseat in the hallway, some coat hooks, and a TV on the wall.
They do need to fix the interior door to the Crimson Room. It's loose and anytime someone else opens or closes a door in the rest of the building the Crimson Room door rattles and it also makes it hard to enter the code because it keeps moving when you push a button. Another thing to keep in mind is the place is covered in wood (floor, walls, and ceiling). It looks nice, but there is little to no fabric anywhere and that makes every little noise audible. When I was laying in bed I could hear people going up and down the stairs at various hours. The first couple nights we stayed, there were guests in the other rooms that decided to party and be loud in the common area till late in the night. That's one of the drawbacks of this kind of layout with the common kitchen, dining and sitting room that everyone has to share.
Overall, I would say it's a great place to stay in the right situation. Like if you have a large family gathering or a large group, it's a nice idea with the shared common areas. For us, between choosing the wrong size room (which was our fault), and the other things mentioned above, it was an ok experience but would do it differently next time.

What an adorable place! I was in the Indigo Room for two nights. Takes up the entire third floor in an elongated floor plan. All knotty pine. Beautiful craftsmanship! Immaculate and cozy, and very private. Comfy bed, hot hot water, great water pressure. Walking distance to restaurants and shops. Outstanding!

Be warned, they do not change key codes between guest stays. Unfortunately a guest scheduled to stay a day later was able to enter my reserved room. There is no front desk, but a number to call the manger is given.

Used this for a one night stay in Ely. Nice botique inn that looks newly completed. Well setup, homey knotty pine and clean room. Nice Kitchen area to share if desired. Bonus of Northern Grounds credit for coffee house up the street. Would stay again without hesitation.

The room was large with a couch and TV. The bed was super comfy, as were the pillows.it was very clean. It was quiet. Everything looked to have been recently remodeled in the inside. The outside not. There was nothing but a small sign on a fence by the driveway with the name on it. So it was a little hard to find. There was coffee but no food in the morning. We would stay there again!

This is the second time my wife and I have stayed here. An older renovated house split into several rooms. We stayed in the Amber room which is on the main floor with the front porch outside our door. The porch was nice for sitting to enjoy the evening. We arrived after the bakery closed but we called ahead and that was no problem at all. Great location, cabin type room, very clean, nice kitchen for shared use, reasonable price.

Clean, charming, quiet room.
We stayed a night in the Indigo room and it was very comfortable - the room is so relaxing and most businesses are within walking distance. I would choose to stay here again.

Hi Pete, that is just fine with us! We do have "designated" pet friendly rooms at the Stay Inn Ely, these rooms are the Crimson and Amber room (both have private entry decks.) Otherwise, our West and East Lofts are also considered pet friendly. There will be a $20 pet fee adjusted onto your reservation.
Please be considerate of other guests at the Inn, who may not be "animal people." We ask that you please have your pet on a leash, especially if walking through or hanging out in the shared common space. We also ask that you please avoid leaving your pet unattended in the room. You are responsible for any damages, cleaning and liability caused by your pet as well.
If you have any questions or need help with reservations, please give us a call at 218-365-6010.
