Secured me a motorboat on a last minute trip to the BWCA. Dennis is friendly and talks about old time stuff but ignore that. Casual personality. Don't canoe at Snowbank Lake. The wind and choppy waters are no joke.

Ron and Julie and Dennis manage to provide a fantastic meal home cooked and you can stay on a island or camp, or in the motel and cabins. We go annually. Don't expect wi fi or phones or tvs there are none. Get in touch with nature and take a hike or look for moose even dog sledding in the... More

I've been going to Smitty's for years for our first dinner after traveling in the wilderness. It's always a great time. They are warm and welcoming. The owners are aging and struggling so this might be your last chance to experience this old style rustic resort that seems right out of the 50's. The dinner is home-cooked style and they... More

I am no longer a fisherwoman, but I still enjoyed Smitty's this year. It's on a large lake not all that far from Canada, and the BWCA border cuts through Snowbank. Those Minnesota woods are stifling on a hot day but if you get in a boat and out on the water, the problem goes away. Mr. Schmidt dropped us... More

We first stayed at Smitty's three or four years ago, and we have since stayed there at least once a year. It is a place that draws one back. Smitty's is not modern, but it is rustic and lovely. The family who operate it know how to make you feel comfortable and welcome. In the evening guests gather in the... More

We stayed at Smitty's for only one night because we had already rented a cottage and it wasnt ready until Sat. We called and they were happy to take our reservation. They explained that they fixed meals there and because we were too late to make a reservation, we would have to eat in town. We made reservations for breakfast,... More

Ely MN is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. While this is not a place for everyone, if you think it’s a place for you why would you come here and stay in a motel in town? Especially if you can stay on one of the lakes in a fishing cabin for the same price? Smitty’s is called... More
