This is a family resort in northern Minnesota. We have an indoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzi hot tub, sauna, and game room at the lodge. We are just north of the headwaters of the Mississippi River. We are located on a chain of three lakes with good fishing, and we have daily summer activities. We rent boats, and provide guests with canoe trips. We offer WiFi, cable, and non-motorized water sports included. Our cabins have full kitchens as well as air conditioning, gas fireplaces, and campfire pits.

First - addressing some of the previous reviews: most resorts do not provide coffee, soap (hand or dish), or towels of any kind. However, we are seasoned resort travelers and know this but I do agree it should be better disclosed on the website. We booked a while back - maybe it’s posted now? If not, it should so newbies know. And our first year at a resort- we found that the hard way too. This property is beautiful! We really enjoyed our stay- and are considering coming back! (We tend to bounce around but will make repeat visits at our favorite resorts). But will address a few of the cons: First, we went as extended family. All siblings, their kids, my parents. We rented two cabins and a poolside suite. Ours were one of the few non-renovated cabins. That’s fine! We knew that going in! And they were still clean and cute but our cabin was cleaned better than the other (my bro’s). For them; the initial extra cleaning was not what we/they wanted to be doing first day. Second - and this again is how it’s advertised; the website said Charcoal Grills. I interpret that as black grills with a cover. I was surprised to learn that the “grill” is park-style charcoal grill. I have not experienced this before. Disclosure! I think most of the renovated cabins have an actual charcoal grill-grill, just not the non-renovated. That’s fine but should be more clear on website. However! Owners were very kind, heard me out and delivered the grill I was expecting the next am. Made my day/week. Yes, it is the small things that count as we had planned every meal but one (to serve a group of 12 including kids) on that grill! Third this resort is pet friendly. Great! I love that. My siblings are dog owners themselves but chose to board than bring. While this is not totally on the resort owners -but there should be some groundskeeping to monitor, or keep pet people more accountable? And; Pet Owner: Clean up after your dogs!!! No; there was not poop everywhere or anything but there was a lovely turd on the walking steps from beach to cabins, another near the swing bench by the playground and another near the beach itself- where my brother got the wonderful experience to step in while grabbing a beach chair for my mom. Last - before I brag; when the office is open, it should be staffed. I know finding help is hard right now. So I say this with some grains of salt. But there were a couple times we stopped in for beer (no one around). This is actually one of the reasons why we do resorts. This is an amenity you can’t get at an Air B&B! And we loved that this one had local beer on tap! Again, someone did always come around, you occasionally had to be patient to buy things or pay for things. ;) However; this is a picturesque resort! The beach is clean and stocked full of sand toys and water toys! Kids went crazy for both and played all day! Adults got kayak and paddle board time in! They rent tubes for tubing! But free tubes for lounging in water! Nice beach chairs and loved the hammocks! The owners are “new” but very nice and helpful. We had a couple not-so-great weather days and really enjoyed the daily activities. Fun to play bingo and have a beer and cheese curds. Loved the food options on site. The fishing is fantastic. And even if you don’t fish? The boating was awesome. We brought ours and loved this lake! Really enjoyed the shuffleboard, bean bags and volleyball! We had a really wonderful time and we would come again.

Way over priced for what it is and the new owners are extremely rude and unprofessional, from what I herd from some locals they just bought the place a few years ago and it had been going down hill ever since

We booked an extended stay here and absolutely loved it. The property is gorgeous, overlooking a big lake. Huge range of cabins depending what you're looking for. They come fully furnished and with a stocked kitchen if you'd like to cook on site. Their bar & restaurant is fun and they have tasty beers on tap. The fried pickles were my favorite. There's an indoor pool open year round, which is perfect for families when it's not nice enough to go to the beach. The owners are fairly new, and they were the most amazing people - we could see how much they cared for their guests. Can't wait to book a summer vacation here (or a girls weekend!) Thank you Kohl's!

With COVID our Alaska cruise was cancelled, leaving us looking for an alternative. We found this resort and booked for a week in July. After booking, it was announced the resort had been sold so the old owners could retire. It left us hoping all would go well, and it really did. We had a great week at the lake. The cabin was what we wanted. Simple, adequate, screen porch, deck and all the tools you needed in the kitchen. We rented a pontoon and got out on the water for fishing. And throughout the resort it seemed like they wanted family fun. A playground, ladder golf, shuffle board, some daily events, ping pong, and plenty of water toys like kayak, paddle boards etc. We had a great time as a family, caught some fish, had a bonfire. The new owners are very nice and they were figuring some things out too. Can't forget to mention we got ice cream and a tap beer or two at the lodge. But they had food may have to try next time we're here too!

We booked a small cabin (#4) for my birthday. It was just what we needed. From the queen bed you can lie in bed, lift your head up and see the water. Even though there were plenty of fisherman, kids and what appeared to be a bachelorette party, it was quiet at night. Believe them when they tell you to bring towels and soap. Wish I would have remembered paper towels as I am so used to them. The new owners, Ashley and Brian, are very helpful and were around anytime we needed a beer. (the Lions Liar has Bemidji Brewery tap beer which is a real joy instead of Coors light). Enjoyed the pizza very much and the free beer they gave me for my birthday while I waited for the pizza. It is nice to be in a place where dogs are welcome. (It is a $25 daily fee for the dog, but it is worth it!)

My girlfriend and I stayed here for the night this past weekend and were very disappointed in the level of service and the lack of basics that were provided. First the service. We purchased a room through Hotels.com. On the confirmation we received, it clearly stated check in is between 2pm and 8pm with checkout being at 10am. We did arrive a bit early (1:40pm) and were told by the owner that check in was actually 4pm and checkout is at 9am and that "they don't know what the booking sites are saying for check in and check out times". It felt very amateurish. They could "rush" to have the room cleaned by 3 and we could walk around the property until then. We had driven for over 5 hours that day and wanted some R and R which was a bit frustrating but I can somewhat overlook that. Second the room. We paid $173.00 for a "poolside" room. When I imagined poolside, I did not imagine a room through a sliding glass door in their indoor pool area. The descriptions for the room were at best deceptive. There was very little privacy and you could hear everything being said and done in the indoor pool area. Children screaming, splashing, and yelling up until 8:30 pm. The room lacked the basics such as body soap, shampoo, coffee, etc. The only pro was this property was pretty cool. Lakeside with a private beach for guests. Other than that, the room and level of service was greatly disappointing.

Thought I would share since there hasn't been a review in over a year for Kohl's resort. We usually take our kids to the water parks for summer vacation. That wasn't happening this year. Liked the idea of getting away from the crowds. This was a great retreat. Rooms were clean. Every cabin has their own fire-pit. The resort is open, and you have neighbors but aren't on top of each other. Lots of lake toys for everyone. Kayaks, paddle boards, floating play area on the lake for the kids. Once you get waist deep it gets a bit mucky, but not a big deal. Playground area has bags, horseshoe pits, shuffle board. We always had something to do. It is a little spendy, but thought it was worth it for the time we could spend together away from home. First world problem, the WIFI is wonky. Login and password are easy to find, sometimes you just lose connection. Not a big problem since we were outside most of the time. Indoor pool was popular with our oldest. Was welcomed on arrival, and would like to come back next year.

Looking for a great family oriented retreat? Look no further than Kohl's Resort. Clean cabins with all the ambience of a northern Minnesota getaway. Deb and Jim are great hosts and the property reflects their high standards. The rates are reasonable too. We just returned home and are headed back for the fall colors. The rating should be 5 stars; they certainly have earned it!

We wanted one last get away before school started up for the kids. We stumbled across Kohl's Resort and booked for a week. I'm so glad we did! The kids had such a blast with all the amenities and activities they had to offer. We enjoyed hanging out at the lodge while the kids swam, the kids had a blast at the beach building sandcastles, using the kayaks and other water items, we rented a pontoon for a day and fished till our hearts were content. We are already planning on making this a yearly trip! The cabin (202) was the perfect size for my husband and I, two kids, and my mom and step dad. I loved the fact that they had a washer and dryer on site since we were there for 7 days. The food and items available at the lodge was perfect for the times we didnt want to cook or when the day got away from us and we could eat outside on the patio. I also loved the fact that they are pet friendly and we were able to bring one of our dogs with us. I highly recommend taking the day to visit Lake Itasca and the Mississippi headwaters. Other than that, we didnt leave the resort and didnt want to! 5 stars way, way up from our entire family.

We stumbled on Kohls looking for a cabin for a one night stay. When we got there it was so beautiful and peaceful. The owners were so nice and friendly, This is the epitome of a family resort. Clean and comfy and rustic. Each cabin has a full kitchen. Very family oriented with the beautiful lake and swimming area. tons of toys for kids to use free of charge. If I had children this is where I would take them during the summer! Great memory creator!
