We have stayed at many bed and breakfasts over the years and in my personal rating system, the Cocoa Cottage is right up there at the top! Lisa and Larry are very personable and made our stay very pleasant. The house is lovely as well as the rooms and it is very charming in the arts and craft style. This is the first time during the pandemic that I have gone away and I felt very safe. The cottage has four rooms (all charming) so I felt safe knowing that there could only be eight guests or less. The cottage was very well kept and public surfaces were always cleaned. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast.

The beauty of this Arts and Crafts bungalow was enhanced by the beautiful, peaceful location in western Michigan near water, water, water. The village center of Whitehall was within easy walking distance of the Cocoa Cottage, as well as to recreation trails.

The accommodations were clean and comfortable, with thoughtful attention to detail. Our gourmet hot breakfast was tasty and memorable with signature chocolate additions to the menu.

The friendly Innkeeper, Lisa, was attentive to our questions and suggestions about local sites and dining.

We had a most enjoyable stay with Lisa and Larry. The house was immaculate, with a comfortable bed and very cozy decor. Larry prepared a gourmet breakfast daily which was delicious, eating outside surrounded by Lisa's garden made it even better.
Great location near Lake Michigan with beautiful sunsets. We will be back.

My mom booked our trip before Covid-19 started, for my 40th birthday. We decided we'd still go if they were open when our trip was planned. Lisa and Larry were so accommodating, took all necessary precautions, and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and safe. The food was delicious for both of our breakfasts, and their hospitality was even better. If you have the opportunity to go and stay, you won't regret it. And the chocolate.... YUM!!

First of all, the breakfasts were incredible and that alone would be reason to book a stay. The house is beautiful, and even with Covid restrictions was warm and welcoming. On check-in, Larry gave us lots of great dinner ideas, and later in our stay we enjoyed hearing about some of the history of the house and the renovation process from both Larry and Lisa. The love and effort they put into the house shows -- definitely will stay again if going back to the area.

I was first drawn to this lovely Bed and Breakfast because of the charming, beautifully restored 1912 bungalow. I came back because of that and the wonderful hospitality of the hosts. The home itself is clean, gorgeous and furnished with authentic Mission/Arts and Crafts decor. The room was extremely comfortable and appointed with everything we might need (and chocolates, to boot!). There is also a small lounge area upstairs with a Keurig coffee maker and a small refrigerator for guest use. The Innkeeper, Lisa, is a a fantastic host. Sumptuous breakfasts are served at 9AM each morning and a lavish charcuterie tray is available as an addition to a reservation. Cocoa Cottage is just the place for a relaxing getaway!

Lisa is a very nice innkeeper and it was a pleasure to meet her. Breakfast was good. Served promptly at 9 am.
The website makes the place seem a bit nicer than it actually is. Kind of bare bones.
If you like mission style arts crafts era you will like the decor.
The biggest issue for us was that the bed/pillows were EXTREMELY uncomfortable. A sheet set with light blanket & old thin spread are all that was in the room. We tossed all night & I had to take 2 Aleve in the morning just to get moving. *There really needs to be some upgrades in mattresses and bedding. That would make a huge difference.
There are also no little extra amenities offered such as Keurig coffee maker for any time of day or evening treat etc. We are very early risers so that mattered to us.
We frequent b&b’s whenever we travel and maybe we are simply used to a bit more comfort or a higher end place…it just honestly wasn’t for us.

Response from Lisa Tallarico, Owner at Cocoa Cottage Bed and Breakfast
Responded Jul 25, 2021
Thank you for your candid feedback. I appreciate it very much! If you would please contact me and let me know which room you reserved, and the date, that would be very helpful. Thank you! All our bedding has been replaced within in the last 2 years ( just prior to us closing for Covid!) . Considering we were basically not open much in 2020, and only open part-time since then, it is fundamentally new. I only wish I knew more at the time of your stay to be able to correct this issue for you. I am baffled by your Kurig statement, as we have had a 24/7 Kurig coffee and tea station available for guest use for over 5 years! 5 different coffees, 5 different teas. Really, not sure how to respond to this comment other than I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. That is not our goal for any of our guests. i hope your next B&B experience meets your expectations! Thank you again for you candid feedback.

The Cocoa Cottage is the perfect place to stay, no matter what the occasion. Located in the fun and relaxing town of Whitehall, staying at the Cocoa Cottage provides the opportunity for exploring the town, enjoying the outdoors, or simply resting inside. Larry and Lisa are incredibly welcoming, friendly, and flexible to suite what you need: and make a delicious breakfast each morning. This was a perfect weekend trip. So glad we stayed!

Larry served us a new breakfast entree which was toe-curling good. We also found a new restaurant for dinner nearby (Big Daddy Walleye) which was a fun place. We felt very safe at the Cocoa Cottage as it was very clear they had taken every precaution to ensure our safety from the Covid virus..

The breakfast meals were wonderful every morning fresh fruit and fudge before the entree. Authentic arts and crafts home on quiet street. Highly recommend. Lisa is a very gracious hostess and we enjoyed sharing many stories with her. Her breakfasts were a big hit.
