I have been driving past this place for so many years and have always wanted to stop and check it out. All the eye catching colors are relaxing somehow and drew me in every time so I finally had the opportunity to stay toward the end of May. This was an awesome place to go without having to fly somewhere tropical during this time and when you are on the beach side of the resort, you truely forget that you are still in Michigan. I had the most relaxing, enjoyable time. The cabins feel like home, relaxing and comfortable. The staff was amazing, they genuinely cared that we had a minor concern when we got there but it was a simple one (a dirty spoon behind a lamp) that was probably a child on the previous stay before ours but it was hidden good. Lol. The staff came down and rechecked everything right away and were very attentive. We figured out we were being picky at first, they helped us relax, staff was friendly and so down to earth. We had such a good time that we booked the following week and the week after that too, I've been home a week now and I'm having withdrawals. Nothing but good things to say here. I fully recommend checking this place out. I'll be back up again very soon!

Beautiful view, but beach pics on line are old. It’s mostly sea wall now.

For some reason they have walkways connecting everyone’s porch, so our neighbors keep walking over our deck, within a foot our two of our windows. It’s rude and odd. There is tons of beach to go around, and walkways around as well.

Two cabins over they’re smoking non-stop and it’s blowing in to our unit

These two items are making in an average stay at best.

We knew to expect people all over the beach, just didn’t expect them to be basically INSIDE OR RIGHT UP TO OUR Windows all night.

Take a mattress topper with you, beds are firm. We were supposed to have an outdoor movie and never did. We did have a community bon fire that one of the guests started. We went to the main office twice and both times they were out.

Don't waist your time and money!!! I booked a 4day 3night reservation only to have them cancel it within a hour and half of calling me to ASK if I wanted to add another night. I called the manager Lindsey and she was so rude, immature and not professional at all!! So if you don't mind taking off work & booking a vacation, only to have it taken away for I still don't know why. Then this place is great for you. If you care where you spend your hard earned money. Than stay ANYWHERE else!!!

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had in my 63 years - unit 16 Mai Tiki!
The room was so small you would stand up and hit the wall! No AC !!! But no one said anything about that. When I stated I was thinking about leaving. Was told there is no refunds! The unit is small and dirty. Bugs Everywhere!
You would think you were in a third world country.
This is one place to stay away from !
Trip advisor gave it 4 star’s!!!! Are you kidding me.
The ole saying- you got me once! You’ll never do it again!!
Beware’ don’t visit here cost me $600.00 for three days of hell!

I made a reservation online and contacted the owner Theresa directly to confirm. She confirmed the stay and the location we selected that day. However, the following day they called back now saying the resort was overbooked. They of course offered more expensive options or locations on the property that we were not interested in at all. Their website is extremely vague and difficult to navigate - you need to look at multiple websites to see photos of "some" of the properties available. When I asked for further details of the units I would be potentially moved to, the owner became increasingly more difficult to talk to. I think she forgot that as a business owner, it's a good idea to apologize to a customer when an error is made and then try to make it right. Theresa was rude, ill-tempered, unapologetic and dismissive. I feel it was a complete bait-and-switch operation as I was being pressured to pay a higher rate than I had reserved or move to an undesirable location. Thanks for failing to honor the confirmation you gave me and for disappointing my kids Theresa.

This was our first time to Tiki. We booked online a few months in advance, we thought we were getting cottage #12 that was in all the pictures. When we checked in they "stuck" us at (to our limited knowledge) some place call El Cortez. WHAT's THAT? There was nothing on the site about El Cortez.
Basically Tiki bought them out last March but did not really make this clear on there website when you book. They also have not updated the sign. The bottom line is this causes frustration and confusion. We were really disappointed (at first) when we check in to unit #12 at the El Cortez.

So TIKI please listen to my advice. Please change the sign of the El Cortez and also do not use repeating numbers for all three of your resorts. Start with the number #1 and go from there. it will avoid a lot of confusion. We were not the only people who thought we were getting a different unit (two people on the same weekend tells me there is a booking issue) - your website is too "slight" to distinguish between the resorts.

OK if you are still reading, after all that, I think the unit we stayed in was decent. It was clean and furnished well, except for the tube tv. Tiki needs to replace that with a flat screen to save room. Also you need to either inform people on how to light the stove (that's right I said light the stove, the stove is so old you need a match to light it - this is a major safety hazard. I could just imagine a 20 something group not understanding pilot lights and leaving the gas on. So TIKI please invest some money and get self lighting stoves. I don't have any hair on my hands after trying to light it)

The bathroom is ok, the shower is TINY!!

This is a shout out to the employee named JUSTIN, I'm still waiting for my fan that you promised me. Again if you are planning on staying there, there are NO FANS OR AC. This makes the unit almost unbearable. One of the other units called the front office for a fan and they went to Walmart to buy them a few. When I asked, a person named Justin said he would do the same, this was in the morning, when I called back in the afternoon Justin whined about how he had to go to another store to get it and he was making a "special trip" just for us. Well Justin and Tiki you guys should have had fans in the units from the start of the season. I can't even imagine how people stayed there when it was 90 plus. Please take care of the issue as well. We never got a call or the fans, so that is a bit unprofessional (luckly it was cool enough that night). Justin go now and make sure there is at least on fan in each unit.

So the units need new TV's, fans or AC's, and new stoves.

The resort itself is ok, we were at the El Cortez so we felt a bit isolated from the cool units that are pictured on line. I will say that my one experience with one of the woman employee during the raffle was very positive. I could tell she cared about the guests and had a big heart, so I really liked that and would like to see more of that.

A little about the area. please do yourself a favor and go to Lumbermans Memrorial and the other sites down the road, that's what PURE Michigan is all about.

Everything I wrote about is true and factual. I think the resort is very nice, it just needs some tune ups.

On Sunday, June 28, my fiancé and I stopped in on our way back to Saginaw after spending the weekend in Oscoda at my parents summer home. We were looking for the perfect place on the beach to host our wedding and weekend full of fun next June. Mai Tiki seemed to have everything we were looking for, except friendly customer service. We asked the guy at the front desk a few simple questions and he seemed bothered that we were even there. One of my questions was when did he recommend we book by, and he said they book 50 weeks out and the earliest they would take our reservation was July 5. We left, feeling puzzled as to how many the resort would even be able to hold, we were looking at renting the entire resort plus the sister resort down the road. I called back on that following Wednesday to speak with someone and was told to come in on Saturday, July 4th at noon and we could get a tour and meet the owner.

When we arrived on Saturday, not only were we denied a tour and didn't get to meet the manager but we were also told by the guy at the front desk that our dates in June were already booked!!!! My fiancé asked when it had been booked since we were originally told we couldn't put the $500 deposit down until July 5. The guys only answer was he didn't know it was just in the books, with a very cocky attitude. Something wasn't right, but hey if you don't want our business that's fine! You'll lose out on others also when word gets around.

After reading some of the reviews on here I am glad we didn't book Mai Tiki. How embarrassing for us if we had our guests stay in a filthy, outdated resort. As they say, everything happens for a reason. If I am ever asked by my clients or staff on recommendations for resort places, I will make sure I mention our experience at Mai Tiki. Word of mouth is the best advertisement.

I'm so sorry that you were not able to book your wedding at Mai Tiki Resort. Unfortunately the dates you were looking for were already booked for a wedding for next year. The manager that you spoke to did not have the wedding dates for the following year yet. You sent me an email and I called you immediately to discuss the wedding dates. I know that you had an appointment at noon on Saturday the 4th and as you stated you got caught in the 4th of July parade downtown and were not able to be here at that time. Cleanliness and customer care are our priority. Every cottage has been updated and we have a full time 24/7 staff to assist our customers. Every night we have a bonfire, throughout the week we have movies on the beach for kids, we have a fowling game, life size jenga, sand volleyball, playground on the beach, tiki bar that serves ice cream, slushies, hot dogs and stand up paddle boards and kayaks. We do have a facebook page Mai Tiki resort where you can see many pictures and our website Thank you

Not much good to say. I expected a good time. Came up way short. Unfortunately for the owners, there isn’t much they can do about it.

The road noise is too loud. The place is just too close to the road. Although there was no health hazard that was obvious, the dumpsters were overflowing, but come to think of it, this may explain the uninvited visitor in our unit that we needed a mouse trap to catch. The beach area was dirty and littered by the guests. It was like that all week. Despite the resort rule of no fireworks … every night by very young kids under no supervision.
Arab-American clientele .... rented nearly half the units … in two waves. I’m guessing that goes on for the entire summer judging from some of the other surrounding rental properties where they were very well represented as well. Oscoda must be their vacation getaway from Dearborn. They had no consideration of other people’s belongings (games, chairs, …) Adults and kids picked up our stuff and used it as their own. They didn’t ask. We had to go retrieve it.
Monopolized the fire pit. It was very uncomfortable for our family when you’re so drastically outnumbered and everyone is speaking a different language and smoking a hookah.
We thought we had some relief when the whole community left on the same day, but the second wave came in the next day. There were so many of them (the second wave), they got their own fire pit. must have had some pull with the owners. On second thought, I don’t believe they were anywhere to be found. Did I mention that they were loud … the kids, the music …. That combined with the road noise … so much for hearing the waves lap up on the beach.
Probably sound like a racist right? Check it out yourself. We had such a good time, we left a day early.

I am so sorry you did not enjoy your stay at Mai TIki Resort, our goal is for everyone to have a great vacation experience! I am aware that certain members of this particular family was not satisfied with their stay. I called this family to discuss the issues, instead of answering or returning my call they decided to post this review. We have a full time staff that is there 24-7, so I am not sure where the comment about not seeing an owner or manager comes from. I know that the Father of the family spoke to Emily the manager and the main complaint was about the people that were renting a few of the condo's close by and that they were arab-americans. We do not discriminate against race or religion. If there was a problem with your neighbor all you have to do is make us aware and we will fix the problem, we cannot fix the problem if we do not know what it is. If the other guests were bothering you in any way we would have found a solution, but I can't do anything about someone not liking someone else's race or religion. There are 22 units and we have about 150 person capacity, there were 4 condo's rented by arab-american families that week. That's a maximum of 24 people out of 150 people as we were full. We are here to provide to you the best vacation experience you can have, all of our units but 1 have been remodeled, the last one will be remodeled this year, we have over 500 feet of pure sand beach and beautiful, pristine clear blue water. We have a nightly bonfire and movies on the beach for the kids. We have a staff that lives at the resort 24/7 to answer any questions and help with anything you may need. If you read a review and you are unsure or have any questions please call us and talk to us 989-739-9971 Thank you

When I say "simply the best" or "owner care" in the title here, I'm speaking from long-experience, as I used to live in Oscoda, and after I moved 'downstate' as we call it here in Michigan, this resort became my new "home" in the area. It's transferred ownership since I was last in the area to stay -- and to truly wonderful, talented people who not only care for the absolutely UNMATCHED beach and property qualities, (from cabins to beautiful condo-style rooms and suites), but to that rare set of individuals in this business who also TRULY care for their guests. They do this not just for the "business", and it shows. Their actions alone speak to how they handle every part of their operation, from its infrastructure to the obvious care in choosing their employees, and to how they, themselves, are set apart from other hospitality industry owners/operators in that they're caring for people FIRST, with pure business aspects of such an enterprise coming second ... especially when it counts.

This could not be better illustrated than by how they have recently treated me, entirely unknown to them at first, when I came up to attend to a very personal tragedy in terms of losing my child at the end of April -- and, strangely enough, precisely on the weekend that these "owners" (I'm sorry -- can hardly think of them that way now), were just beginning to open the resort as a whole for the season. It was perhaps "fate", in a way, that I just happened to catch them while they were there off/on that weekend, to ask if "my usual cabin" would be available for me to stay in as I often had before -- whether there to spend time with my son in "our favorite hometown" (work pulled me away from Oscoda, although it remained "our home" in so many ways -- and still does, for me, to the extent that I will most likely be moving back soon), or, in between, stayed in the very same cabin, every time (whenever it was available, anyway) throughout short or long periods of shooting an outdoor television show wherein I was the 'angler' of the group of outdoors professionals. Theresa and Paul, though, without even knowing about my son's passing, saw what was later described as a 'near urgency' in my eyes that I stay there even if they weren't "officially open" yet (in terms of their own expectations of how the resort should be represented to guests), especially in that particular cabin, and went BEYOND the call, in every way, to make sure that THAT cabin, before their other ones and/or their more luxurious hotel rooms/suites, could be made ready for their first guest of the season. The resort hadn't even officially opened yet, as I've mentioned; and still, they opened their hearts to a complete stranger in this way -- and the updates in the cabin itself since I'd last been there, were of course wonderful as they continue to strive to improve/update and make Mai Tiki Resort even more beautiful, in every way, than it always was.

Once they learned who I was, what had happened, and that we had a memorial service planned for Oscoda as well as another one, later, downstate for local family/friends to mourn my son's passing ... the outpouring of true emotion and care, the ways in which they went OUT OF THEIR WAY, SO many times, to make sure that we ALL had whatever/however/whenever, etc. that we may ever have wanted or needed (or didn't even know we would, frankly, because we were all still in shock, I believe) -- while they were still readying the full resort for its more official opening ... simply extraordinary in the way that ONLY extraordinary INDIVIDUALS can be in their willingness to show respect, kindness, and ... I don't even know HOW to describe it, especially as words fail me while this loss is still so profound and recent. What I can express, however, is that they weren't doing any of it for "revenue" or "great press" ... they were doing it, personally, because of, simply, who they ARE. I will be forever grateful, as will my family/friends who were there and/or who couldn't stay as long as we did, but felt comforted, too, by simply "knowing" that I was not just "in good hands" when they had to leave ... but may as well have been in FAMILY hands, considering how much simply being there meant to ME, and how I/we were being treated by ALL Mai Tiki staff.

This review may be terribly composed, I realize, so please forgive that part of it; but I didn't want to wait another day to "tell the world" of this beautiful, peaceful place you will NOT find anywhere else in the world, and most certainly, the MOST caring of people who now own it who will move heaven and earth to make your stay there the peaceful, fun, comfortable [or insert your own 'need', and if possible, they'll make it so for you while you're in their care] 'vacation' you would want for yourself, and/or your family. The beach frontage is huge and pristine, with the endless horizon of the majestic Lake Huron the FIRST thing to greet you every morning with the sun's rising ... the enormous beach area and play area for adults AND children to simply spread out and enJOY Michigan's gorgeous sands -- amazing! There is more than enough room at this resort, ESPECIALLY, for both large groups and more intimate couples or solitary travelers to find whatever it is each might be looking for in terms of either a large group to have a blast, or a solo traveler or couple to set themselves apart from the larger groups and simply ... find tranquility.

The grand Au Sable River, rated one of the finest trout streams in the country, is a mere few miles away, its mouth into Lake Huron and harbor/marina area(s) offering you MUCH more in the way of fishing for ALL kinds of fresh water fish during spring and fall runs, or simply summer "fishin'", let alone the place you'd BEST want to be to boat, canoe, tube, kayak, jet-ski ... or to get yourself into some very exciting off-shore trolling for huge lakers and browns, steelies and salmon -- and need I even mention the ever-present perch, walleye, bass in the upper reaches, as WELL as the beloved trout? Because, truly, there really aren't ANY fish in fresh water you won't find in or near Oscoda; and, as a former professional angler, if you want to try multi-species, multi-techniques, and seriously multi-FUN -- you WILL want your "base of operations" at Mai Tiki, so that, at the end of the day (or night, grin), you can return to another kind of heaven to contemplate your adventures on that extraordinary beach, to grill the freshest, tastiest fresh-water fish on the planet ... and to be taken CARE of by people, if you get to know them, you will always later consider friends far more than you will mere "proprietors of a resort".

I cannot thank Theresa, Paul, and the rest for ALL that they have done for me, personally -- again, not knowing me at ALL when I first arrived during their own first day of opening up, turning on water, beginning even more remodeling/landscaping, etc. ... in the midst of ALL of their own hard work, and it's extensive, they absolutely STOPPED, looked at me as a PERSON, opened their hearts AND "my" cabin for me ... and in those moments? Before they even knew I'd just lost my son, they became so much more to me than simply people to "do business with" ... more than the "anonymous desk clerks" or "owners of a resort property" ... they became friends I'll respect and hold dear for the rest of my life.

So, while I've read some of the less than "excellent" reviews here, and honestly, was taken aback by a couple that, honestly, shouldn't have been written on ANY level, let alone on the levels they were -- please discard those in your mind. If you wish the BEST in terms of location and beach frontage and access to Lake Huron, let alone the BEST in terms of what client SERVICE is truly all about? Then there's really no other choice for you BUT Mai Tiki.

I write this not as a grieving, appreciative mother, but as a professional woman who has traveled extensively across the globe, used to live IN Oscoda itself and certainly knows the area and offerings intimately, and as a fellow traveler and human being, who appreciates it when business owners aren't simply "operating a business", but who truly CARE about each and every move they make for their GUESTS. You simply will NOT find another property OR other resort owners, anywhere -- let alone on the east side of Michigan, near and/OR directly on Lake Huron & the AuSable River -- which could please you (and/or your family) more on any level.

Thank you again, my new friends, from the bottom of my heart. I'm sure I will see you soon, and I look forward to it -- as I will even more so every single time I'm in Oscoda from now on, whether or not I end up back "home" to stay, sooner than later.
