Detailed Reviews
We just spent a long weekend at The Lake House. It was spacious, with three bedrooms. It is located right on the lake and you can hear the waves in the bedrooms. It is a private location with a private beach, quiet in October at least. The location is perfect- close to Ontanogon and to the Porcupine Mts and several beaches. The cottage itself is older, but the kitchen and bathroom have been nicely updated and the kitchen is well stocked. The living areas feel like grandma and grandpa just left- leaving behind their furniture, books, pictures, photo albums etc. It gives the cottage character ,the cottage feels like it tells a story. Unfortunately it also has that granny, musty smell. We enjoyed our time there.

Pro: Right on the beach, fully equipped kitchen available in cabins, combination locks so no keys to lose, fire pit is wonderful with a sunset, a few chairs available
Con:. No view of water from rooms, not enough chairs on beach for everybody, difficult to find owner, a bit grimy and tired
Rooms in need of a fresh coat of paint, and better cleaning. Hairs found on shower ceiling and walls, towels stained and dingy, never saw manager.

This is our ninth stay at Superior Shores. That, in itself, should speak volumes. This little resort is our sanctuary. It is clean and well maintained. The sunsets here are stunning! We have met so many nice people here over the years. But the best part of our stay is always our hosts, Don and Linda. They bend over backwards to make sure we have everything we need to be comfortable. We are so well taken care of here. And you won’t find a more reasonably priced resort on the lake anywhere!
Update: we keep coming back! New owners Jeramy and Nardia are working hard at updating this quaint little resort. Every time we stay we notice things that have been improved. I’m sure it’s a daunting task but they are cheerful even after a 12 hour shift of remodeling. We hope to squeeze in a short fall trip but have our reservations for July 2025!

This resort is truly right on the shores of Lake Superior. We had Cabin 9, which is a duplex with Cabin 8, and our back window was about 20 feet from the lake! The cabin was roomy and clean. The upstairs bedroom had a very comfortable queen bed and an air conditioner. There was plenty of room to sit and watch the sunset, plus a communal fire pit. We brought our dog, and there was plenty of room to walk her on the grounds. The owner is super helpful and loaned us several useful books on the area. We would love to come back.

Room was outdated, but had access to lake, sunset, etc. Family-owned. Felt like grandma’s cottage. Owners were very eager to help us enjoy the stay and scenery nearby. Room was clean. Just a cool place to stay, with or without kids.

Our stay at Superior Shores was very disappointing to say the least. I had called the office on tuesday february 10th and arranged the reservation with Linda, the owner. She was very friendly over the phone and told me that the only room available was cabin #11 for the days that we would be staying there.
Although it states on their website that the cabins have a 2 day minimum unless there is a single day vacancy, this was not the case. Over the phone it was plainly communicated that I would be checking in on the 14th and checking out before 11 a.m. on the 15th. She stated over the phone that she was surprised that the cabin had not been booked yet and I was glad to hear it because I thought it would be a perfect place for a romantic get-a-way.
She told me the total would be $125.00 for one night and I let her know that we would be bringing our dog with us. Pets are an extra $7 per night so the total was changed to $132 plus tax. OK everything fine......UNTIL WE ARRIVED.....
My girlfriend and I arrived at the office around 5:30 p.m. When we pulled in and stopped we met Don, the owner, coming out of cabin #11. He told us where we could park and then to go into the office to fill out paper work. As we started to fill out the papers I noticed the total on the receipt was $250 + $14. I asked about it to Don and he told me right away that they have a 2 day minimum on their cabins. I told him the same thing that Linda and I had agreed to over the phone and again he stated that they had a 2 day minimum. Linda then came into the office and Don went into the other room. I asked her about the total and she said that they had a 2 day minimum. It was like I had never even talked to this same person over the phone.
We could hear Don yell from the other room "If theres a problem let me know" and "We have a mortgage to pay for". At this point all I wanted was out and our deposit back. Don stated that they had several calls on cabin #11 and that we were the ones that had made the reservations already. We ended up staying there one night for $211.37. The cost for one and a half nights.
Not only did we get ripped off but were disrespected by the owner's hostility toward us. Don did show us to the cabin, which was 3ft. from their residence, and through his booze soaked breathe, told us good night. Never again will we set foot on their property and I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!

Our expectation was that cabin #11 was right on Lake Superior and private. We were right on the Lake but the cabin sits almost on top of the residence and office of the resort owners. The resort website led us to believe that cabin #11 was more private--it was not.
In that we were using the cabin as a base while we did day hikes in the Porcupine Mountains State Park, Superior Shores was adequate for our purposes. The cabin was clean, the accommodations pleasant. The cabin includes cable tv, which we didn't need. We plan to return to the area, but we will not stay at Superior Shores again. There are cheaper options in the area if your main interest is the Porkies. Also, our experience was that customer service could have been better. There was a misunderstanding about the dates of our reservation. We had changed our reservation to one less day and communicated that change by phone. Don, the resort owner, claimed that the message was not received and charged us a portion of the rate for the day that we were were not staying there. Whatever the resort policies, this is poor customer service and we won't be back nor will we recommend Superior Shores to our friends.

Found this place on our drive to Porcupine Mtns..would have been better to drive on. First hint that all was not well was the list of rules found after checking in. Rule one..no refund for early checkout!! Musty odor permeates all. Brown water from shower and faucets. Waterview room was stated then given a cramped room w/bunkbeds. Not sure why this guy runs a motel.unfriendly and unconcerned w comfort of guests.spins a good yarn to get a reservation though.

We are very sorry your stay was not what you expected. We work hard to make sure our customers enjoy their stay. We take pride in being clean and comfortable even though we are an older establishment. Our policies are handed to each of our guests at check in. We also have them posted on our website. We would not reserve a room as water view without it being a room with water view. We had two units available for the night and the option was given, a room with a smaller window facing Lake Superior and two double beds or a room with a queen bed and futon bunk bed without a view. The room with a queen bed was chosen. We are on a well and our water has iron in it causing the brownish color. Had we known of your concern we could have addressed it. We would have welcomed the opportunity to resolve your issues had they been brought to our attention.

We are sorry you were unhappy and arrived at a time when there was a high volume of mosquitoes and both black and stable flies. You arrived in the early evening and we had no indication until the next morning there were any issues. You came into the office as said “we need to have a discussion buddy”. You informed me you had been up until 3:00 AM killing and being bit by mosquitoes. I told you I was sorry and asked if you had left the door open (unpacking) or open any windows because there might possibly be a hole in a screen. You assured me not (it was a very warm evening). You told me you would decide what you were going to do and shortly came back to the office to say you were checking out. I told you we’d see if we could re rent the cottage (we have an early departure policy). You proceeded to tell me there was mold in the shower and that you were aware we allowed pets in the units and that there was dog hair everywhere. I told you I was unaware of either thing but would make sure to check because it was important. I asked why you had not mentioned this earlier and you told me you weren’t going to bother to. You let me know you were not happy with me. You never mentioned the other items you brought up in the review. I will respond to them: 1) we are clean not “dirty and filthy”2) we do not have a 2 foot black mold hole in our shower 3) we do not have bed bugs 4) we do not have mice in our cottages or rooms 5) the window air conditioner has a 6 foot UL listed appliance cord so it can reach the outlet (it is run along the wall and is removed when the weather is not warm) 6) we have working battery powered smoke detectors in this cottage both upstairs and downstairs 7) I can’t address our grounds since the reviewer does not say what is wrong. What is true in your review is that the cottage had insects (mosquitoes to be exact), there were many in the cottage especially in the shower drain in the bathroom. I can only guess that around dusk the door to the cottage was left open for a period of time. The following day it was not an issue. I find the demeanor of this guest and what I feel are untruths to be disturbing and invite visitors to visit other views of our establishment on Trip Advisor. Don Kermeen
