My son was on his way back to college after a holiday weekend at home when his car broke down and had to have it towed to a dealership in Newberry. I contacted the Gateway hotel since i needed to get a place for him to stay the night and it was within walking distance to the dealership. The owner was Very friendly and personable and helped me (and my son) feel at ease during this stressful time. The owner was accommodating and allowed him to stay longer that next day while he was waiting for service on his car. The room was clean and had everything he needed!

We made last minute plans to travel over a holiday weekend and everything that would accommodate our family size of 6 was sold out. We ended up calling Gateway because they don't do online reservations after several misses elsewhere. Mike didn't even hesitate when we told him how many people and when he told us the price that was even better! The day we were supposed to arrive we were running late, but he was so easy to work with and made it so that we could easily access our room. The room was better than I anticipated, had plenty of space for us, and the staff was accommodating. It was not overly fancy, but it was just what we needed. We would definitely stay again.

My fiance, our son, and I stayed here for 2 nights, and we HIGHLY recommend it! The room was VERY clean, the bathroom was spotless, and the beds were comfortable. The decor is unique. The bath towels were thick. Air conditioning worked great. The owner was very nice and helpful. Fyi, bring your own shampoo, there is none in the room (not a big deal since there is a Dollar General, a pharmacy, and a grocery store within 5 mins of the motel).
We will DEFINITELY be staying here again, and we will be avoiding the big expensive chain hotel that's nearby.

Very pleasant stay in an old style roadside motel. When you stay here you’ll experience what travelers had available before all the chain and franchised motels. The room was rustic but clean and neat. The owner was quite friendly and helpful. For those willing to make a motel adjustment for at least one night this place will create a positive experience. If in the area again, we would stay here.

I thought I would be getting a room that looked like the pictures. I must have been put in one that was never updated. I was a little disappointed. Bathroom so small you could barely turn around, shower stall only and it had that and mildew on the shower door. Shower ran not and cold, almost like when my kids used to flush when I was in the shower. Lol. Other than that it was clean and friendly. Morning light made it impossible to sleep in, large window facing east and drapes were cream colored. Air conditioner was so loud couldn't run it at night.

I have no idea how these folks have been able to maintain the absolute charm of a motel from yesteryear while keeping everything just immaculate! Super nice owner, eve. Brought out towels to dry off our motorcycle after it rained. Not a lot here for young children but if you are a couple looking for the ultimate UP experience then this is the place for you! Also recommend the parties at Timber Charlie's which is just down the road a bit.

This is a cute little motel on a main highway. It is comfortable and clean. There was a microwave, but no refrigerator or coffee pot in the room. The bathroom was very small, but had some very pretty homemade curtains. Check-in was pleasant and our host was helpful about the available restaurants in town. I'm guessing that the rate was half that of the Quality Inn down the road.

We had not planned on staying in Newberry but were tired and it was the next town. There are a LOT of motels in this town, several of which are closed. Also, there are a number of others that you DO NOT want to stay in! However, the Gateway Motel was great! For $49, we got a room that was more like a B&B room, but without the breakfast. It was decorated in knotty pine and had a desk with books and magazines, real artwork on the walls, lots of towel racks and hooks, and was a really cozy place. The owner had owned this property for 13 years, and has put a lot into it. Highly recommended!! Also, just north of town is the Oswald Bear Ranch. While it may sound like a tourist trap, it's not. They have only bears and really care about them. Not to be missed.

After having car trouble on 77, we were able to get towed to the dealership in Newberry, located conveniently across the road from Gateway. We were reluctant but had no other choice, so we got a one bed room for the night. The female owner was kind enough and even allowed our dog, no troubles. Our room was sub par with no shampoo in the shower, no wifi, and poor heating, but it was one night, who were we to complain? After about 30-45 minutes in bed I began to get itchy so, thinking perhaps it was an allergic reaction, I showered then headed to bed for the night. We left the next day and 4 days later the itching became a persistent, full-body issue. 3 weeks later a doctor's visit confirmed it was Scabies, contracted from the bed sheets in the motel. I called the motel to let them know (let's face it, it happens to the best) and possibly seek reimbursement only to be told by the male owner that I am "out of my mind" and then he hung up on me. I am now completely dissatisfied with the place, the owners, and the entire experience. Sorry guys, I'd love to support a fellow yooper but you've let me down.

We were in a jam and saw the good reviews, so we stopped in to rent a room. First, the room smelled pretty bad, but we figured we could hack it since it was just a night. When going out to eat that night, we tapped the bumper of a car in the parking lot, causing some very minor damage. We let the owners know about it, since that's the right thing to do. Turns out it was the owner's car. He starts having a conniption about it, even though my insurance is going to pay the whole thing. Then he tells us we have to leave and he won't be giving us our money back.

Stay away from this property and its unstable owners. Life is too short for this kind of craziness.
