Travelers' Choice
At the crossroads between a leisure castle and a family country house, the Château de Saulon is located in Saulon-la-Rue, a small village in the Côte d'Or between Beaune and Dijon, a few steps from the Route des Grands Crus of Burgundy. The estate welcomes you in a green setting of 27 hectares, a multi-faceted place of life and an ideal setting to escape alone, with family or friends during a stay in Burgundy. The estate has several outbuildings in addition to the main building: the two former stables, located on either side of the main courtyard, respectively host a series of suites, and the gourmet restaurant Deux Rivières. The Pavilion, the other outbuilding of the castle, also has around ten rooms. The Orangerie, a beautiful 360m2 glass roof, was built in 2018 to host Château events, weddings and seminars.

What is a better place to explore Burgundy than staying in a real castle in a most romantic setting including moats, gardens, a park and a lake? Chateau Saulon has an excellent location between Dijon and Beaune, a romantic ambiance, comfortable rooms, a nice pool and a rood restaurant. And it is affordable. We have stayed at Chateau Saulon five or six times and watched this hotel upgrading from 2 stars over 3 stars to currently 4 stars. It is a story of continuous improvement and the new owner, an interior designer, is adding further beauty to this gem of a hotel. Let's go systematic. LOCATION: The Chateau is located in Côte d'Or, the heart of the most famous wine-growing region between Dijon and Beaune. The closest wine-village is Gevrey-Chambertin which is 8 km away. To Clos Vougeot you drive 17 km. The village Saulon-La-Rue is not overly attractive, so you need a car or bicycle to go around. The castle is on its own grounds at the fringe of the village and in an absoluty quiet location. CASTLE & GROUNDS: There is a wonderful ensemble of an alley leading to the castle, a gate, water-filled moats, a central square, the stately mansion, several side buildings, the rear terrace, the pool, the garden and the romantic park with a creek, a river and a small lake. Around every corner, you find a nice detail, like an old stone bench, a bridge across a stream, a little waterfall, a historic fountain etc. It is really nice to stroll across the grounds. ROOMS: The least expensive rooms are in the castle building, while the junior suites and suites are in the former stables and other side buildings. We had a junior suite in the Grange building with private terrace, stone walls, period furniture, an excellent bathroom with a modern designer's bathtub and a rainfall shower and a separate toilet. Everything very comfortable and very beautiful! PUBLIC AREAS: There is a beautiful lobby area under a modern glass roof with tasteful décor, a small, cozy bar, a terrace and the lawn where you might sit, relax and enjoy a glass of wine. POOL: The outdoor pool (unheated) is nice and clean. They are currently building a spa house from an old barn behind the pool area. RESTAURANT: The restaurant is in a historic, vaulted side building with a large garden for al fresco dining in summer. The food is excellent and surprisingly inexpensive. Try the foie gras in meurette sauce! Extensive wine list. Good service. The restaurant alone could be reason enough to stay here. For less than €40 you get a really good 3-course menu. BREAKFAST: Buffet breakfast costs €19 and includes scrambled eggs, self-boiled eggs, bacon, sausages, excellent cold cuts, breads and croissants, homemade jams etc. They even have a complimentary bottle of good champagne (Charles Heidsieck) on the buffet! COVID POLICY: On check-in, they scan your pass sanitaire and than you can freely move around without mask. VALUE: This hotel offers very good value for money. The room rates are affordable and so is the restaurant. Breakfast is also reasonably priced. No extra costs for parking. CONCLUSION: Still our favourite hotel in Burgundy. The closest competitor would be Chateau de Gilly which has a slightly better location and a more medieval look & feel, but Saulon has better rooms (at least on the junior suite level) and an ambiance which feels somewhat lighter.

Disappointment! A potentially beautiful Chateau but located in an unattractive place. The architects who renovated this hotel did it well but only on the inside because it is decadent on the outside. Good breakfast. Unfortunately, although the staff are quite professional, there is a lot of neglect in the structure which, especially in the common areas (see especially the park, the swimming pool) is really poorly maintained and falls apart!

We had booked a superior room which was spacious, but turned out to be located at the ground floor next to the office and the very unpleasant noise from its slamming door which even woke us in the middle of the night. At check-in we were escorted to the room which was not cleaned yet - not the best view off used towels and linen to start with. After a long drive we hd looked forward to relaxing in the garden and pool, but two men were working with loud machines on maintenance and mowing the lawn. We had been on the waiting list to the restaurant and were happy when we upon our arrival were informed that there now was a table free for us in stead of dining in the bar au vin. However, when we arrived at the restaurant at 7 pm as agreed we were not on the list and had to argue with staff for 10 minutes. They then set up an extra table for us, offered us a free glass of champagne and both the following service and the food was excellent. But some major flaws and not meeting our expextations for a 240 euros night’s experience…

This hotel is a gem. Absolutely lovely. Staff were helpful and attentive. The hotel is in the countryside but only 20 minute drive to Dijon or several cute villages. The grounds of the chateau are beautiful and the rooms are comfortable. The pool is wonderful in the afternoon on a hot day. They have a fun barbecue concept on weeknights with a fire and sausages, cote de boeuf, or salmon. And their Des Rivieres restaurant is only steps away for more elevated dining. Extensive precautions are taken for cleanliness, etc. We will definitely be coming back here again!

In rather uninspiring surroundings, Chateau de Saulon offers a great, relaxing stop next to Dijon. Set in lush, green grounds where you can stretch your legs, it gave us a very warm, friendly welcome and offered a comfortable and nicely appointed room. The restaurant, using many locally grown products, was a real treat: a light, refined and innovative meal.
