Leon, a rough-round-the-edges, steeped-in-history city, provides a satisfying contrast to the more touristy streets of Granada. And Hostal Calle de los Poetas offers a great base to explore this intriguing corner of Nicaragua. So many great sights and adventures to be experienced; with Leon being a great springboard. The guesthouse is in a good location, a short walking distance to the main plaza. Once you check-in and get your room key, you are free to come and go as you please, or just hang out and read a book in the common area. There is purified water available free of charge from a cooler by the kitchen. The hostel is secure and hides a lovely, leafy courtyard from the bustle of the street outside. Marthe & Rigo are the real gem about this inviting guesthouse. Just speaking with them for a few minutes, you can see they are thoughtful, considerate people, who do a lot of good work within the local community and the guesthouse is a good side business that helps support the other local initiatives they are involved with (working with street children being one of them). I would highly recommend a stay at Los Poetas to anyone looking to get away from the gloss of faceless bigger hotels, and enjoy a true local Nicaragua experience. I think our only regret was that we did not have more time in Leon to get to know Marthe and Rigo a little better. We have no doubt that we will return to visit Leon and stay at Los Poetas again.…
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Marthe & Rigo in November 2015! It was an absolute gem of a hostel. Wonderful, knowledgable hosts that made us feel so welcome. The garden and building are lovely, and it's in a perfect location, easy walking distance to the central plaza in Leon, as well as lots of great restaurants, bars and sights. It was a very special place that we look forward to returning on our next visit to Nica. We loved Leon and staying with Marthe & Rigo made our visit all that much better... Thanks you two!!
Excellent location quite close to the city centre, nice, clean rooms, such a beautiful garden, hammocks and a bookstore. Unfortunatley we didn´t get to know Rigo and Marthe, but still enjoyed our stay (although it was sooooooo hot!! Not even the two fans in the room helped)
I stayed 4 nights, and will return. The room was great, the hospitality excellent. Rigo and Marthe were wonderful. Enter through the bookstore (well stocked with a multitude of English language titles) into a small courtyard with tropical foliage, and a back yard with several palm trees. Clean, comfortable and quiet. Short walk down clean, wide streets to the central square.
I can't say enough about the hostel and it's beauty. The rooms were spectacular, the garden is gorgeous and the staff are so lovely. It's so reasonably priced (we paid $10 per person per night). There's a full kitchen at your use, and it's very close to all the main streets in Leon. Not to mention Rigo and Marthe, who run the hostel. They are incredibly lovely people with enormous hearts who want people to learn all about their country. They're so friendly and welcoming, and we experienced so much more of true Nica culture because of them.
