I found Sunraay after having a really bad experience at another hotel. I just walked in and asked for a room, and the couple who runs it were so nice and helpful! The hotel is basically lying ON the beach, so you couldn’t ask for a greater location. There is no breakfast at Sunraay, but they can do a deal with the hotel next door, so you can get their breakfast for a good price (Sri Lankan or American). I chose not to do this, since I was getting up very early a couple of mornings, but it is available for those who want it. In general, they have a good working relationship with next door, so you can also use their sun beds on the beach if you don’t want to lie on the sand. There is music on the beach every day from around 4 o’clock, so if you want quiet and tranquil, you should do your sunbathing before that... I didn’t mind, I think it gave a bit of “beach paradise feeling”. It is also worth pointing out that many of the very popular beach hotels on Uppuveli Beach don’t allow locals to hang out there, even if they want to buy drinks or food!! This was not the case at Trinco Beach where Sunraay is situated, and I really enjoyed seeing so many nationalities getting together in the evening. My room was quite spacious - I had three beds, but only paid for one since I travelled alone. There is a bit of brown spots here and there, so the cleaning can’t get full marks (but bear in mind I walked in from the street, so they didn’t have any notice about that particular room being used). The design and interior is a bit inferior to more fancy hotels, but considering the price you get more than your money’s value! There is WiFi all over the hotel, and if you want a steady connection (e.g. for video calling), you just go stand next to one of the routers. To Trincomalee, this is impressive! I’ve already mentioned the owner couple being really helpful, but I just have to say it again! The English is a bit slow, but no matter which question I had thy always found an answer. Seriously, any question big or small. At night, the front and back (beach) gates are locked for security. But no worries, they will let you in and out of the hotel “after hours”, you’ll just have to ring a bell. Drinking water of good quality can be bought at the hotel (cheaper than the nearby shops). Remember to bring an adapter for charging your stuff, since they don’t have enough of these for each room (apparently, they keep mysteriously disappearing...). All in all, this is not a 5 star hotel, but they are definitely worth 5 stars in their price range! At least! I had an excellent stay, and I will recommend Sunraay to anyone who considers travelling to Trincomalee - single, couple, friends or families - and want to discover a bit of Trincomalee outside the “tourist enclaves”. …
