The hotel is pleasant, clean and all the rooms are different. It looks tribal. Different than most of the wood in the temples in and around this city. Although, it elevator should be reinvested in....dragging stuff up and down is quite a task for anyone.

First, Nepal is an amazing country with intense culture the moment you land. I just came back from a 10 days trip in Nepal from Hong Kong, me and my friends stayed at Hotel Heritage for 1 night as we love Bhaktapur so much. Not only did we see the reviews on CNN travel on Hotel Heritage, but we were attracted by the hotel location and the traditional architecture. The hotel is very charming. All the staff there are happy, helpful, and genuine. The food at the restaurant is delicious. We were lucky enough to meet the owner, Prakas Mohan Dhaubhadel. He shared his passion about saving Nepalese culture, nearly all furniture in this hotel are salvaged antiques, the 75-year-old carved window frames were pulled from a bonfire while the 400-year-old stone flooring was rescued from the rubble of a destroyed royal palace. This is a wonderful hotel to stay that creates lasting memories.

This hotel is a charming replica of a historic building in the old district of Bhaktapur. We greatly preferred the town to noisy Kathmandu. The historic sights, marketplace, and airport were easily accessible by foot, tuk-tuk, or taxi. We ate three delicious meals in the quiet hotel restaurant. The staff were very warm and professional with good English skills. Great quality for bargain price.

As someone danielrachmanis wrote, "You don't really need to spend a night in Bakhtapur." The hotel is "fine." On first approach, it is lovely. There is definitely a traditional feel to the hotel. The staff is friendly - and they carry your luggage up to the room since there is no elevator in the hotel. The rooms are nice. They are clean and the rooms have character. So, why only an average rating? The restaurant is highly priced with very mediocre food. The area around the hotel does not have a lot of other options. If you want to go into the old city, you have to buy a ticket of 15 dollars per person. Although this is good for a day of sight-seeing (and some wonderful food), the night we arrived we did not want to pay 30 dollars just to be able to go in to town for dinner. Service was slow and the food was not great. And it was expensive. The prices seemed fine until they added the 10% service and the 15% tax (which was calculated with the total bill PLUS the service!) The hotel is fine. It definitely has character. However, we had stayed at a different hotel when we arrived in Nepal and it unduly influenced our ability to be objective about this hotel.
