Situated on the outskirts of Graskop and overlooking the beautiful Mpumalanga escarpment you will find our Guest farm. The name ZUR ALTEN MINE is German and means "to the old mine". In the old days there was a private gold mine on this 10.5 Hectare property. Our guest farm is ideally situated to explore the Panorama Route with its spectacular view sites such as Gods Window, the Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Blyde River Canyon .

Detailed Reviews
We stayed in two different self-contained bungalows and both were perfectly clean and well furnished (including power adapter for European and Swiss plugs). The location is a bit outside of Graskop, which means less fog in this time of the year. It's tucked away in a clearing and the green surroundings, the pond (its frogs' croaking may annoy some people; however, you cannot stay in the middle of nature without the sounds of nature) and a little walkway invite to just relax in nature. The host is super friendly and very accommodating.

From Manyeleti Reserve we drove to Graskop, a beautiful drive through a lush green landscape, full of forests. From Graskop, its another 10 min drive to 'Zur alten Mine' which is on the road towards Pilgrim's Rest.
Our chalet, the Honeymoon Chalet, had a lovely view over a pond full of fish and water lilies, with a little bench nearby for dreamers and poets who love to just sit and enjoy the beauty of nature1
The chalet itself was very cosy, comfortable and spotlessly clean. We were very happy to have an electric blanket as it was a very cold night.
Breakfast at an extra charge is optional. The homemade bread and jams, made by the German owners, was well worth it. Unfortunately, we didn't get to meet them as they had just left for Germany.
The location of the Guest Farm is ideal for visiting Pilgrim's Rest, God's Window and Graskop. We did this in the afternoon....had coffee and pancakes in Graskop and dinner at a really cosy restaurant at Pilgrim's Rest, the 'Vine Restaurant'.
The following morning we drove to Blyde Canyon, the Three Rondavels and then on to Tzaneen.
A one night stay was definitely not enough. Next time we will plan for more. Would have loved to have had more time to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the lovely gardens.

We had travelled from Tshwane, turning off at eMakhazeni into the special village of Dullstroom. Then on to Mashishing avoiding plenty of neglected potholes on the way. We enjoyed the Long Tom pass, stopping at the life-sized replica of the Boer gun and on to Sabie. Zur alten Mine is near to Graskop and was easy to find. Rainer greeted us, completed Covid formalities and took us to wooden chalet number 6. This had a splendid view in the Graskop direction. A covered area with built in braai is reached by a few wooden steps. The interior includes a spacious living area with an adequate kitchen alcove, an ample bedroom with adjoin twin beds, and a large bathroom. Being winter, we were impressed with the modern wood burning stove that Rainer explained to us and that was easy to light and burnt wood very effectively.
It was load shedding when we were there, but with German efficiency (which showed up in other ways as well), there was a powerful battery lamp that lit automatically when the power went off.
We had time to walk to the old vertical gold mine shaft and beyond to the graves and hillside view-site. The paths were well marked and cleared.
We cooked our supper before load shedding and appreciated the stove which kept us snug when there was no power.
The shower was excellent- with an overhead spray and a hand held head. I can honestly say it was one of the best showers I have enjoyed in my life. There beds, with electric blankets were warm and comfortable.
We went to the Graskop Gorge Lift (not to be missed) and the silk farm and factory the next day and fitted in a visit to Pilgrim’s Rest. A full and varied day.
Our second night had a shortened power cut and it did not really affect us due to lighting and the stove.
Rainer and his wife Walli were very helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We have already told family and friends and would certainly stay at Zur alten Mine if we are ever in the area again.

The details of our trip kept changing due to friends dropping out last minute, yet Rainer kept on doing his best to accommodate us. The unit where we stayed was clean, spacious and met all of our requirements. The property is large, so you feel a real sense of privacy in your own space. The grounds are well kept. There is a large indigenous forest with well marked trails on the property. I will definitely go back to stay there again!

Our family stayed in the Family Cottage and the Garden Cottage. The surroundings are fabulous, and the hostess is welcoming, kind and accommodating. My children loved exploring the dam, watching the fish and seeing the goats. The gardens are tranquil and the cottages are well appointed. The indoor fireplaces warm the whole cottage in the evenings and provide a welcoming atmosphere. The self-catering kitchens are well outfitted and there is a braai area at the Family Cottage. We did not have enough time to do the walk, although it sounded lovely. The Family cottage has an upstairs room, which the kids loved! The beds were comfortable. The shower has four different settings, which made the kids laugh, and was lovely. Breakfast was fabulous! Such an array of interesting options.

High-quality cottages in a wonderful location, very tastefully furnished, the location is great for visiting the Panorama Route and other highlights in the area. Super friendly and helpful hosts. The absolute highlight is the breakfast - home-baked bread, homemade jam and local sausage and cheese specialties. Fantastic! Many thanks Rainer and Wally

For anyone looking to stay in the Graskop area, do not hesitate to make Zur Alten Mine your home base. Rainer was very helpful and friendly and making a booking was a breeze. We stayed in one of the log chalets and were thoroughly impressed with how easy it was to make it toasty even in the chilly weather. Lots of wood for the efficient fireplace, a lovely kitchen to use, a heater in the bathroom and awesome shower, heated blankets on the beds and easy access to plugs everywhere to charge our electronics. Bonus: the tap water is mountain spring water!
It was like a breath of fresh mountain air. The location is also stunning and not far from all the stuff you'd want to do in the area (Graskop Gorge, Berlin and Lisbon Falls, God's Window and even Dri Rondawels). We will never stay anywhere else in that area.

Such a lovely place and a nice warm welcome too! We stayed in a 4 bed cottage and it was so nice, a fireplace really was the cherry on top because it was cold, wet and misty when we arrived. A cozy cottage with a full kitchen and a nice clean bathroom, the whole place was neat and tidy and tastefully furnished. Unfortunately we were there for only one night but we did manage to do a forest walk the next morning and it was absolutely magical! Words cannot do justice to this beautiful place and we would love to return again one day.

Great location just outside of Graskop. Rainer made great recommendations for dinner and his homemade breakfast was fantastic, fresh bread, brownies and jelly. The houses are very cute and the location is nice and quiet.
