Making the most of the beautiful vistas, the Fish River Lodge has been built in harmony with its stark, striking surroundings. Completed in 2009, all the buildings that make up the lodge pay tribute to the amazing landscape, offering spectacular views of the Fish River Canyon from sunrise to sunset. The architecture and interiors of Fish River Lodge have taken their queue from the rugged landscape that surround it. Contemporary, and at times monastic, the lodge was designed to reflect the unique beauty of its location.

Wow what a location. Long drive to get there and not without challenge but work all the effort. Each chalet has a spectacular view of the canyon and is well equipped and very comfortable. The dining is amazing given the challenge of its remote location. Recommend the drive down to the canyon floor and the waterhole swimming. Dream maker location. Just do it!

This lodge is all about its location on the rim of the canyon. Amazing views from the rooms and the restaurant. The rooms are modern and comfortable. The food is good and they cater for vegetarians. There are walks along the rim or trips with guides. Would like to have stayed longer.

Perched high on the rim of the Fish River Canyon, or on The Edge of Eternity as they call it here, the views over the second largest canyon in the world are simply stunning. How something so immobile can look so different with every passing minute is incredible. If you are keen on landscapes and hiking this is the place for you. Join up with Justice or Nicklaus, two of the great guides here, for the full day hike into the canyon and a swim in the rock pool. Those who dare can leap off the rocks - yes, it is deep enough! It is a challenging hike and at times like a roller-coaster on foot but the rewards are great. All that is going on outside the lodge, but what about inside? As we make our nomadic way around Namibia inevitably reviews begin to be comparative. Having stayed in some small and medium sized camps in similarly remote places Fish River Canyon Lodge is the first to feel more like a hotel than a lodge. Speciality coffees (ahem, a cappuccino??) carry an additional charge, and there are no bar snacks with your evening drink. The staff singing feels choreographed and the passing of a tip basket more Fuengirola than Fish River! In summary the service and experience isn’t quite up to hotel standard. I understand that there has been a bit of a management upheaval and that many of the staff are new, but the place simply seems to lack joy. Talking with the staff not all enjoy working here. The rooms are comfortable without being memorable, the beds being small doubles, and the towels a bit scratchy! So I am left feeling that I have had a bit of a quixotic experience. The location is amazing, the food very good…. and that the lodge is both standing on the edge of both eternity and an opportunity to do the fine tuning to really deliver!

This is a hotel we won't forget - the location is unparalleled (on the edge of the canyon rim), the rooms are smart, comfortable and stylish. The staff were great, and the half-day canyon drive is an absolute MUST (although the 3 hour trip down is pretty challenging, with the road quite rough in patches, and 'Terror Pass' is well-named!). Wilhelm was our driver and guide - and he was great. The breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the staff very helpful. It's a bit of a trek from the B4 road (hope it's been recently graded) - but worth every second!

Thank you for your review. We are so happy you took on the Terror Pass, the reward to see the rock pools at the bottom of the canyon and the unique view is quite worth it. We will pass on your compliments to the staff and hope you will think back on your stay on the Edge of Eternity with loads of happy memories.

Being the only property along the whole 220 km rim on one side, we knew it would be remote but nothing prepared us for the experience of just being at the Fish River lodge for two nights: once in a lifetime !! As with all our hotels I did loads of research however I do think there are some pros and cons you should be aware of: Cons We travelled in winter and expected warm days and cold nights but nothing prepared us for the cold damp nights in this property. Other Namibian properties lodges we experienced seem to heat up during the day, making the nights bearable….. not these concrete structures…. It was warmer outside than inside during the day….Even the clean sheets felt damp on night one and two! The only relief is hot water bottles placed in the beds but maybe more rugs would help with the concrete floor and fixing some way to use the prolific sunlight that is present all day to help warm the rooms ? Power outages - to be expected. Even with no kettle or hairdryer in the rooms it happened frequently at busiest times (maybe the hairdryer kept fusing it 😉) So don’t plan n making this a hair washing stop ! Also Wi-Fi spotty at best and only present in reception when power was up and on full. The journey we had read was long and arduous and to be honest we wondered what all the fuss was about….until we reached the turning - the last 104 km took over two hours. I would suggest you need a four wheel drive or at least a high clearance vehicle as it’s not an easy drive. Pros The location is second to none and you certainly feel privileged to stay there. The cabins are on the cliff edge and the views as mentioned previously are something truly spectacular…. Difficult to articulate. The staff are amazing so many made our stay truly memorable Francois, Sunna, suzette, wilhelm and the restaurant staff were all sharp and extremely attentive. Management couple ( assume as one white couple present) gentleman pleasant carrying out meals but lady clearly chosen the wrong career - she was sullen to the point of being rude. A remote location like this could truly benefit from an engaging manager that actually interacted with guests….. let’s be honest there’s nothing else to do here, so conversation, bit of local knowledge shared and introductions would be welcomed and enjoyed by the fellow travellers. Food - excellent!! A set menu but very well prepared, large portions and delicious. I am allergic to wheat and chef not only made me gluten free bread but also my own desserts each evening….. thank you Chef …. Above and beyond expectation. I guess as always the answer as to whether we enjoyed our stay is would we return - the answer is a definite YES….. as said earlier the location makes it a once in a lifetime experience that cannot be missed…..

This place isn't the easiest to get to but when you walk through the doors of the lodge and see that view then it's just WOW and so worth the effort. To know you are in the only place on the edge of the canyon is pretty special. We didn't do the canyon hike as we were at the end of a long trip and we just wanted to rest up and take in the view, there are canyon rim walks on well marked tracks that we did a number of times as the view seems to constantly change. The food in the cozy restaurant was the best of our trip, compliments to the chef and the team for the work that goes in to producing such great food in a remote location. The road to the lodge isn't the best, the last 20Ks in particular are pretty rough and takes about an hour. We had a problem with one of our tyres, the team were amazingly helpful, the obvious issue was a puncture but they spent a considerable amount of time getting to the root of the problem ( valve issue not puncture ) and getting us back on the road again. We booked direct with the lodge as it gave more flexible booking / changes than the booking sites. Overall it is a bit of an effort to get to Fish River but if you have the time then you will be well rewarded with a great lodge in an incredible location, the spectacular views and sense of isolation will leave me with wonderful memories. Do try and fit it in to your itinerary if you can.

May 2022 - Three night stay. Wow. This was our second visit to Fish River Lodge. Spectacular views of the second largest canyon in the world. Lodge is located on the absolute edge of the canyon. Rooms are stand alone cabins lining the canyon edge on either side of the main lodge. Rooms are sparse (no tv, Wi-Fi, etc) but very comfortable as the view is the main attraction. We did the half day tour to the canyon bottom via lodge 4x4 guide and it was breathtaking. Best way to experience the canyon is also seeing it from inside as it is canyons within canyons, with the Fish River flowing through the bottom. Lunch and a swimming hole on tour plus exciting 4x4 trails. The food at the lodge was very good with plated dinner meals and cook to order eggs/buffet breakfast. The lodge experienced a power outage during our stay but while enjoying the canyon view and hiking we hardly noticed. The manager provided complimentary bar service for our inconvenience. Nice touch. A bit out of the way off the D463 road but worth the drive to get there. Absolutely recommend this as part of your Namibia adventure.

The trip was part of a five week tour of Namibia with friends. The location of the lodge is unparalleled. The service of lodge staff is very good and they are accommodating and very hospitable. Unfortunately the weather was vert cold with gale force winds. There were numerous power problems creating electric shocks in the showers which was extremely concerning. Hot water is a major issue and the size of the ned - small double made for uncomfortable sleeping. However the staff were extremely helpful and moved us to a twin bedded room which was a major improvement. An excellent vegetarian dinner option was prepared for us.

I've wanted to visit this place for a long time and a dream came through in every respect. It has all been said in other reviews but not writing another one feels like not doing justice to this absolutely amazing place. It could figure as a sole reason to come to Namibia, or at least to Fish River Canyon. Breathtaking views, the wonderful isolation of the setting, surrounding nature, and the lodge itself, with its fabulous design and tasteful furnishing, all accompanied by friendly service and delicious food. It doesn't get much better than this. I am utterly thankful for the whole experience.

Ahhh what can I say. The best. The best! After a long drive from near Marientar, we arrived here with no expectations - after all we were here to hike and that was it. Wow. We were blown away by the location on the edge of the Canyon, the views were breathtaking. The hotel itself was simply and beautifully designed. The rooms ( also on the edge of the canyon) were stunning and spacious. We stayed here one night before our hike and then the night after our hike. Staff, service and dinner were amazing. We did the 3 day hike into the canyon. What an amazing experience. It’s not easy but Willem our guide was the best best ever. Overnight camps were beautiful, so welcoming and the food was fabulous. We even had hot showers! Thoroughly thoroughly recommend. Would do it all over again. ❤️
