Making the most of the beautiful vistas, the Fish River Lodge has been built in harmony with its stark, striking surroundings. Completed in 2009, all the buildings that make up the lodge pay tribute to the amazing landscape, offering spectacular views of the Fish River Canyon from sunrise to sunset. The architecture and interiors of Fish River Lodge have taken their queue from the rugged landscape that surround it. Contemporary, and at times monastic, the lodge was designed to reflect the unique beauty of its location.

We stayed 3 nights at unique location at the rim of the canyon, which offers fantastic views over the canyon. Rooms are well equipped and offer a beautiful view, you can see the sun rise laying in bed.

We did the canyon drive and the sundowner drive with our guide Dassy. Both were beautiful excursions, he did an excellent job. Furthermore we did two hikes along the canyon rim which were great as well.

Food was nice and served in a beautiful setting.

Our view on the two main points of criticism you might read about this lodge:

The road to the lodge, in particular the last part, isn't a motorway, but it is not particularly difficult to drive. A car with high clearance is recommended, but a 4x4 is definitely not necessary.

You hear the wind in the cabins from late afternoon onwards, but it was never disturbing in a way that it would have prevented us from sleeping. The view you have over the canyon in exchange is just unique.

When I was looking to book I read the other reviews which were mixed. This is an eco lodge in the middle of no where so I appreciate that there are limitations on what can be offered but for the price as a minimum you need to be able to sleep. Your room is essentially a concrete box with a picture window and a metal roof so you can imagine how hot the room gets when the outside temperature is hitting 40 degrees. The room heat meant that the room was essentially unusable during the day and even with a fan it was just too hot to sleep. Aircon is essential and they need to find a way to provide it. Also although mention is made of the 19km track to the lodge you also need to consider that to reach the track it is 85 kms of gravel road so the whole drive form the main turnoff will take around 2 hrs. Because of the effort to get here, and the price demanded, the lodge must be a destination in itself. It is good and the staff are lovely but it stills falls a little short from excellent. I think the best way to sum it up is to say that this is a view with accommodation rather than accommodation with a view.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your valued feedback, we respect and value your opinion regarding our property and we will definitely ensure to make constructive use of your feedback. In the summer months we do experience very warm days, aircons are something we will consider in future renovations of the rooms.

Let me start by saying that we adored this place. It is right on the edge of a canyon and it has everything you need if you want to really really get away. We spent new years eve here and enjoyed it because it was so relaxing and far from the wild and exaggerated partying that goes on elsewhere. We had a really good massage (in room or on your terrace overlooking the canyon). Internet wi fi signal is terrible, which can be a blessing (to put a positive spin on it). Breakfast staff could be a bit smilier and more helpful. It seems like they all wake up later than the guests do and stand in a corner looking sleepy and a bit angry. IF you are a light sleeper, beware ! The wind picks up late at night and blows all night long which gives you the impression that you are sleeping with a hurricane going on outside, but we loved it. DO check your bill before leaving. They charged us for a more expensive bottle of wine that the one we drank (but that may just be a one off mistake).

We don’t regret going here as the location is spectacular and unique, and we felt it was good value for money, but there is much more which could be done with the lodge. For such a wonderful location, we were expecting a more polished and luxurious experience.

The rooms are sparsely decorated with small beds and exposed light fixtures, and staff are friendly but do not seem experienced. The food was not good. Lunch was especially weak— they were running low on salad and we were told we could only have one salad between two of us— and in the end they just gave us fries. The pool area, while beautiful, is too small when the camp is full. The rooms were very noisy due to the wind at night— obviously not anyone’s fault, just the cost of being perched on the edge of a canyon.

Given the location, the lodge could charge a big premium if they made small investments in upping their game to that of higher-quality lodges.

This beautiful lodge situated on a truly unique location was our starting point for a multi-day hike through the canyon. The hike took us to very beautiful locations with stunning views. The guide was enthusiastic and showed us a lot of details of fauna and flora. Dinner was blissfully enjoyed under a beautiful starry sky accompanied by a deafening silence. Spending the night in the tents made the trip even more adventurous.

The way back by jeep was also wonderful.

This location is more than worth the detour!

We have booked a stay of 2 nights via a local travel agency. Driving there shows the remote location but at no point you have to worry for your car. We made the entire trip with a small Toyota Corolla and it was no problem. Welcome and Check-in was very nice and easy. Rooms are very nice with a spectacular view from the beds. Dinner is well prepared and presented. Staff were very helpful. Canyon drive was a very nice experience, always felt safe with the driver but we were not thrilled to hop into the offered "rock pool" for lunch break.
We extended our stay for another night, as we loved it so much. Yes it's windy at night. Hot water and coffee delivery to the rooms in the morning are gorgeous.
Little confusing was the bill preparation for the last day, as they mistakenly put the high season rate on our bill although it was, according to their homepage, the cheaper green season rate to apply for our stay. But everything got sorted within a few minutes and billing was correct at the end.

We are staying in Fish River Lodge. Literally, as they write on their homepage “on the edge of eternity”. We are in the last of their chalets with undisturbed views to the canyon and southwest. The tall windows and terrace outside allow views of the canyon to take priority everywhere.

Our chalet is in a very modern style and in fantastic condition when we arrive. Everything is perfectly cleaned, a standard that is maintained over the next 3 days (perfect housekeeping). We have both outdoor and indoor showers, a large bedroom with a view, and a platform outside where we can lie and enjoy the undisturbed view. In addition, we find all the small necessities that you expect in a hotel.

The main lodge itself is also incredibly beautifully built on the edge of the Fish River Canyon, with spectacular views everywhere. A spectacular rim pool provides cool comfort in the hot summer months also overlooking the canyon and nature park.

The 45,000-hectare Canyon Nature Park is a sanctuary for the nature, including the rare Hartman’s zebra, oryx antelope and ostriches, which appear and disappear in the rocky side canyons.

Good trekking opportunities!
We love to hike! And the Fish River Canyon is a top hiking destination. And Fish River Lodge has access down to the Fish River and meandering paths on the rim of the canyon. First day, we take the short rim walk for 1,5 hours. Second day, we take the full day canyon drive. Followed by the longer rim walk for 3 hours (!)

The Fish River Lodge, some opportunities for improvements
One of the minor opportunities for improvement was the restaurant, where we found the service to be of very variable nature. Fortunately, always friendly, but not always very professional. Orders and requests were forgotten more than once, and guests (including us) sometimes placed very close to the hot fireplace. However, when the problems were pointed out, the staff immediately reacted (but sometimes forgot again). The restaurant did not provide the same "luxury sensation" as the rest of the lodge.

Another thing to be aware of is that the lodge is extremely exposed to wind. Two out of three nights, we had very loud wind noise all night, partly due to the construction of the roof. For the same reason, there are earplugs in the chalets, which you can choose to use. Also, there is no air conditioning in the chalets, but a fan and high ceilings. It can probably be a challenge on very hot days!

However, all in all we loved the place and would be happy to return.

This place isn't the easiest to get to but when you walk through the doors of the lodge and see that view then it's just WOW and so worth the effort.

To know you are in the only place on the edge of the canyon is pretty special. We didn't do the canyon hike as we were at the end of a long trip and we just wanted to rest up and take in the view, there are canyon rim walks on well marked tracks that we did a number of times as the view seems to constantly change.

The food in the cozy restaurant was the best of our trip, compliments to the chef and the team for the work that goes in to producing such great food in a remote location.

The road to the lodge isn't the best, the last 20Ks in particular are pretty rough and takes about an hour. We had a problem with one of our tyres, the team were amazingly helpful, the obvious issue was a puncture but they spent a considerable amount of time getting to the root of the problem ( valve issue not puncture ) and getting us back on the road again.

We booked direct with the lodge as it gave more flexible booking / changes than the booking sites.

Overall it is a bit of an effort to get to Fish River but if you have the time then you will be well rewarded with a great lodge in an incredible location, the spectacular views and sense of isolation will leave me with wonderful memories. Do try and fit it in to your itinerary if you can.

We loved this venue, especially as it was at the end of a very very long drive off the main freeway (about 100km of gravel road). It has a wonderful view of the Canyon, with easy nearby walks. Food and accommodation was exemplary. PLEASE HOWEVER that you must book with them via email res2@journeysnamibia.com to get the less 50% special SADC rate, if you book online you will be paying double!

The lodge sits on the edge of the Fish River Canyon and has unbeatable views into the canyon with spectacular sunsets and -rises. The location is extremely remote so we had a Cessna to fly there. The lodge itself is rather basic compared to other top lodges in Namibia. Rooms are spacious but basic and sober. Food is good but not always very fresh as they get delivered only every couple of days. People running the lodge are mostly nice and helpful. All in all it is a great experience to be there at such a remote location.

We did this trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a long drive, but that is mostly because the road is very rough and takes time to negotiate it safely. I wouldn’t worry too much about winding and turning as you just go too slow to become sick and it is an open car, so you’ll have plenty of fresh air. There is plenty of time for stopping and walking around and you can swim in the river if you want.

What is there to do in the 2nd/3rd week in March with regards to tours etc please?
Answer from JourneysNamibia

Hi,due to the heat in March, we cannot offer guests any hiking tours. However, you can still participate in a cycling tour of about 2hr30min either in the morning or afternoon. Or take a half day Canyon drive - down into the canyon and enjoy a swim in the rock pools. Other then that we also offer stunning Sundowner Drives.
Answer from JourneysNamibia
Windhoek, Namibia35 contributions
Hi, It is not necessary for you to go to the other side of the canyon, as we are the only lodge on the rim of the Canyon and it is worth spending 2 nights and do the Canyon excursion with us as we have exclusive access to the river on our side. Plus the distance to go on the other side is about another 5 hours drive and you will not experience the same view.
