Hotel Sterling was a wonderful place to stay while visiting Monroe. Within walking distance to coffee shop, bakery, restaurants and Farmers Market. Hotel was very clean and had a great layout. We had a lot of room. Ours was a two level room with bedroom/bath upstairs and living room kitchenette downstairs. Mini fridge was stocked with variety of complementary drinks. Snacks were in the room as well. We would stay there again!

Pros:
1) The small fridge was stocked with water, pop, milk, yogurt and juice.
2) Breakfast items were provided (cereals, breakfast bars, fruit and instant oatmeal).
3) Spacious room.
4) Room was quiet. We didn't hear any noise from nearby rooms.
5) Free local and long distance calls.
6) Comfortable chairs and the TV rotates from facing the living area to facing the bed.
7) Room was very clean.

Cons:
By far the worst part of the room is the bedding.
1) The comforter was stained (see photo). Yuck!
2) The pillows had stains on them.
3) The mattress pad had stains on it and it had several holes in it.
4) The pillows needed to be replaced. They were lumpy and uncomfortable.
5) The clothes iron had a large gummy burnt spot on the bottom. After I plugged the iron into the outlet, it began to smoke and give off a very bad odor.

Overall, Our stay here was pretty good. Its just hard to ignore stains on the bed you are sleeping in!

I needed this....BAD!!! It couldn't have happened any more easily for me. I was browsing the internet Friday morning looking for a quick personal getaway that I can begin the moment I got off work. When I came across Hotel Sterling it was as if my prayers had been answered (quickly). I was commercially impressed, as the hotel looked more like home than a lodging center, and was equally pleased at the opportunity to experience a small, private-owned, meticulously maintained, do-it-yourself, boutique hotel. Everything went just as the front desk operator said it would. My confirmation email was received almost instantly, my door access code worked perfectly, and not having to interact with another sole throughout my entire stay was THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! The decor at Hotel Sterling fits my style to a tee! The dark woods, the exposed bricks, the lush leathers, the AWESOME marble, raindrop shower, a bed that hugs your every curve, in-room heat/air controls, windows that actually open to allow in fresh air......it was as comfortable as being at home, minus the responsibility....which was the exact point of my much needed getaway. Kudos to the pioneer who established this great experience!

Pleasantly Pleased & Relaxed,

Worst night ever at a hotel! No one at the desk when we checked in, another guest told us to grab the envelope on the desk. No room number and no answer when I called the hotel twice. We literally had to go to every single room and try the key, the last room on the 3rd floor it worked! Mind you my fiancee is 7 months pregnant it’s very warm in the hallways on this humid hot day... finally get into the room it’s a queen bed not a king like we were told/expecting. We leave for dinner and come back to our keys not working And then call three times before someone answers and let them know what’s going on and then he told me to go down to the lobby to get new keys, so I went downstairs waited over five minutes and no one showed up so I go back up three flights of stairs get my phone and call them back for him to tell me I was supposed to call him when I get down to the lobby. SMH back down 3 stories of stairs and he then gave me instructions on how to get into a lock box behind the desk to get a key for the room And then go back up three flights of stairs and that key doesn’t work either. Guy on the phone says he will have someone there in a minute, 15 minutes later a nice young lady comes up there with a master key and cannot get in as well. We are in the hallway for another 15 minutes and she tells us that they can’t get in right now that they will give us another room across the hall (the room that we were supposed to have to begin with) until they can solve this problem. 10 minutes later They inform us that they cannot get into the room at all tonight and we have to wait till the morning so now we are in another room with all our possessions in the room we cannot get into it until tomorrow morning when they can get someone here to get the door unlocked. All our clothes, phone chargers, food & drinks are all in there and my fiancé has all work stuff in there for tomorrow morning. Hopefully they get it open so she can be to work on time.. we left and came home. Unbelievable smh

My wife and I stayed 2 nights. We are 73 and 74 year old seniors with a third floor room. 42 steps to the room and no elevator and no warning. The room had a double bed. There was no ice available. There was a coffee maker but no coffee pods. No hooks in bathroom to hang clothes. Small area around sink to place toiletries. No holes in toilet paper rolls so you had to unroll it by hand. No plastic bags for dirty clothes and no hangers. We might stay again if we were on the first floor and these other items were taken care of and we got a bigger bed (at least a queen). Nicely decorated and the heating, cooling worked fine. Good downtown location. Great coffee shop across the street. No service at front desk.

I stayed at the Hotel Sterling on a long weekend visit for a family wedding. I was aware before arriving of the no elevator situation and I was fine with that. I had the door code to enter the lobby and the reservation envelope was there on the desk in the lobby. I went up to my room and even though it was 4:00 pm when entering the room it was dark and upon entering Rm 205 I walked into a step up into the main area and hit my shin against the step. From that point on always made sure I left a light on when leaving the room so I could alert myself to this step. I was very satisfied with the room and everything was clean and in tip top shape. I checked in on a Thursday afternoon and everything went smoothly. My only complaint was that on Saturday the only housekeeping I had was a new supply of towels and removal of the old towels. Bed was left unmade. Then on Sunday nothing and no housekeeping whatsoever was done. Dirty towels were left in place and again bed was left unmade. I reread all room information and no where did it say that housekeeping service was not done on weekends. Trust me I scanned through everything and nothing noted no housekeeping. This was a very negative with me. My local family I was visiting wanted to see my room so that if a need ever came up to recommend to someone else they would know what they were recommending. I took them to the room on Sunday evening not knowing that room service had not been there and what a disappointment to show them an unclean room. If housekeeping is not maintained on the weekend then it needs to be communicated to the guests. That is my only complaint but it is a BIG one in my book and is why I only will give an "average" rating.

We returned for a visit to Monroe after having been gone 16 years and this hotel was recommended and a wonderful surprise. The rooms were huge and lovely, beds comfy and overall equipped with everything you need. It's a boutique hotel in a historic building so the exposed brickwork is beautiful but with all the modern conveniences. It has a microwave, mini fridge and sink and is fully stocked with snacks, cereals, drinks and treats. It's located downtown and has easy parking and access.

The Hotel Sterling is a renovated older building in downtown Monroe, Michigan. It was very clean, quiet and relaxing. We appreciated the NO PETS policy. Once you check in, there is someone available via phone, but the lobby is not staffed 24/7. My wife and I were very impressed with the accommodations much like a luxury hotel. Breakfast items were provided (i.e. cereal, milk, cereal bars along with coffee and juice) in your room. We would definitely stay again and recommend this hotel!!!

Beautiful room. Very comfortable. Free wi-fi. Excellent location. Easy parking. Also free beverages, cereal, coffee, nutrition-grain bars, yogurt, and fruit in the room. Outstanding value. This is not a chain hotel. It is quite different in that there is no one at the front desk. You check yourself in, but the instructions were perfectly clear. This is a historic building, which makes it very charming, but if you have a hard time with stairs, you need a first floor room or a different hotel. We would not hesitate to stay here again. I highly recommend it.

I'll start by saying I was pleasantly surprised by our stay at Hotel Sterling. I'd never stayed in Monroe before but was there for a wedding and the family of the brides suggested the Sterling. I'll start with the positives:
-the room was wonderful! spacious, clean, a fridge stocked with complimentary beverages and snacks! have had very few stays where the room was better
-Location was good, downtown near most of what you'd need, next to the park (good for my kids), parking available on the street
-price was very good for the quality of the room
-good directv selection

Now the negatives, and mind you, they are not as important as the positives in my book, and probably not issues when compared to the other options in the surrounding area:
-it is a boutique hotel/b&b, so don't expect a lot of "service"
-no elevator, so be prepared to carry bags up a few stairs (wasn't an issue for me, but might be for some elderly or mobility impaired guests)
-noise was a bit loud, particularly later in the evening...unfortunately we had some other guests in the hotel who were celebrating their love for each other pretty enthusiastically and we could hear it. With no one at the front desk over night, there was no easy solution either
-the tv is in the middle of the room...not sure how they could design around it given the room layout, but it made it kind of odd for the 4 of us to watch tv together as we relaxed upon arrival

In summary, I'd stay again, and refer others staying in Monroe to try to the Hotel Sterling!
