Avoid at all costs! Staff are psycho and violent. Our group was aggressively and prematurely ripped out of the river by Hinchman Achres staff on Saturday 6/30 around 3:30pm, cussing at us and nearly hurting many of us. The following day while leaving the area one of our group members stopped by Cummings Flats and was attacked/jumped by 4 Hinchman Acres employees who clearly held on to that aggression and also were upset that our group leader filed a complaint about their behavior. Our friend is hurt but will be okay. I noticed there was a woman filming the altercation as we were abruptly ripped off the river. If you are this woman or know who she is, PLEASE reach out to connect. This has gotten way out of hand and these men need to be held accountable. Also for the love of god, avoid this place at all costs. When our leader complained (prior to our friend being attacked) the following day the owners were not apologetic at all for their staff's behavior in splitting our group up and forcing half of us off the river 3 hours early while screaming at us and nearly hurting many us including a friend that has a considerable physical disability. I am still in awe that this happened. This place should be shut down immediately!!!

Went tubing for the first time. It was super easy. We parked the car, rented the tubes...floated and ended up taking a bus back to the starting point. very nice set up. I would do it again. The scenery was very pretty.

This isn't the fanciest of resorts, but we were not expecting such in a small town in Central Northern Michigan. We were wanting a cabin in a campground setting with access to atv trails, river trips, bon fires, and lasting memories... and that's exactly what we got. Three couples shared Cabin 12, which was a 3 bed/1 bath cabin at the top of a small hill. The driveway was tricky and you would likely need 4wd and room to creatively park 3 vehicles (but 2 easily). We were hauling 3 atvs so left the trailer parked at the bottom (quads at Cabin). Basic dishes, pans, towels were provided by not many of (could use more). Our friends, a family of four, had Cabin 10 a short distance away. The first morning we went on a river trip with 2 rafts and 1 canoe, which was fun. They take you around the bend and drop you off and then pick your group up at a location w power lines nearby. Be sure to check on time allotted by livery as the latest we could be picked up at the end was 5:30 pm, which was quite a bit earlier than most locations. This is not specifically mentioned in brochure. A note on door of livery said Closed Wednesdays (we didn't know until we arrived on Monday). Day 2 consisted of riding trails w a wonderful lunch at MaDeeter's in Lazerne. Resort delivered exactly as it should, however, could improve w just a few more extras such as more glassware, towels, communication (such as a book of info in the cabin).

We hadn't stayed at Hinchmans for years--we were afraid that it wouldn't live up to our happy memories. I am happy to report that it is still a lovely setting, still a great place for families--wooded grounds with a playground, beach, and good-sized fishing pond. There are hiking trails to the national forest which borders the property, too. The cabins are quaint--some date to the 30's with original log walls--but nice and clean and well-equipped with AC, flat screen TV's, and kitchen equipment. Many units have screened porches which is super for the evenings. Of course, Hinchman's canoe/tube rental is on the same property if you want to get on the river, but there are lots of other outdoors activities as well.

The river was nice and relaxing! Be prepared to be around a lot of tube/alcohol parties and bad language! The bus driver that took us back was another story he almost hit a man and was rude about it and he hit a new blue trucks mirror and bent it the way it wasn't suppose to be bent! His actions and attitude was not cool for him to be around children! Slamming on his breaks for no reason! I had to hold my 10 year old daughter back so she didn't get whip lash totally uncalled for! We sat in the front we seen it all! That was the worse bus trip!

On Saturday, July 30, 2016, my wife and I took our kids on a kayak trip in this section of the river, along with another family that had never been on a river trip before. The river was beautiful and the weather matched! However, the beauty of the river quickly turned as hundreds of people in tubes used the river as their own mardi gras. Drunken floatillas of 20+ people passed around bottles of hard liquor and screamed litanies of profanity in front of my children. Drunk people insulted me and my wife as we passed by. At one point, 50 feet in front of me and my 9 year old boy, a lady popped her top and flashed her naked body while others threw beads at her. This happened several times. There was a conservation officer on the river, but I did not see him do anything about it, and it seems that one conservation officer is not enough to take care of this enormous problem. We were completely disgusted and appalled. A few times I quipped that I had children and asked that people refrain from saying and acting this way in front of them. Each time the retort was “why did you bring your children here on the weekend?” The last time I checked, the beauty and majesty of the resource belonged to everyone, and everyone has the right to use the river in a lawful manner. I didn’t know that there were times when we couldn’t bring our family kayaking on Michigan’s famed Au Sable. It seemed that everyone in Mio said there is nothing they could do about it; the canoe livery, Hinchman Acres, did nothing to discourage it. In fact, on the bus ride home from the river the bus was filled with these drunk people that were screaming profanities in front of my kids. Several needed to be carried on to the bus they were so drunk. The bus driver said and did nothing. I complained at the office, but they said there is nothing they could do about it. It's not right that I cannot bring my family here to take a kayak trip without complete debauchery happening all around us. I really wish they had told me this when we made the reservation with them and told them we were bringing 3 families, but it seems they just wanted our money.

This place puts a high priority on serving people. The river is fantastic as well as the scenery. They have kayaks, tubes, and canoes to rent at a reasonable price. They are also good stewards of taking care of the river.

Actually stayed August 2014. Picked this place based on their advertising. They advertised free wifi. We wanted to get a quick getaway during caring for some sick family members and staying in touch was a must. After arriving we learned that wifi only existed if we "took a walk" while we were out on a float down the Ausable, we came back to a cabin that was fumigated and we couldn't even enter for hours because they buttoned the place up. Ended up sleeping across the street for 2 nights and paying for this non wifi fumigated cabin and all they knew is "we are busy with other customers right now" I wonder why? Did they get the same results as us? Would not recommend.

Stayed at the Hinchman Acres Resort because they offer cottages and tube rentals all at the same location. Loved the cottages. Ours had a screened-in porch as well as an area for a fire outside with BBQ and picnic table. We sat by the old campfire at night and talked about the good old days. Cottage had everything you needed. We requested some items that were missing and they delivered them immediately. Location right on the Au Sable river. Free fishing, game room, basketball court and many others things to keep you busy. Walking distance to town. Wifi worked fine but I did not come to Mio for the Wifi. Front desk was great. Greeted me by my first name when I came through the front door even though I had never been there before. Stayed the night and then got up to rent a 4 passenger tube with our friends. Great process for handling the 4 of us. They have got the process down pat. Very good equipment. They drive you to the river and then picked you up when you are done. Had a wonderful time. We will return.
