What a charming campground in an absolute beautiful setting!! Nancy was extremely pleasant and accommodating, upgraded our site at no additional cost to the best site in the park. We have a 44’ Newmar motorhome, pulling a Jeep, just passing through the area. Wish we had planned on a couple nights. Would’ve loved more time in this peaceful place. We will be back. Thank you!!

Beautiful and friendly! Very well maintained. Has that old time family reunion atmosphere. Our site was on a hill overlooking the quaint sitting fed lake. Lots of grass, not much dirt which is great. Owners are very friendly. Highly recommend if you are looking for a quiet family experience.

My wife, kids and I have camped in a tent for nearly 10 years and have always gone to the same place until last week when we went to Bluegill Lake Campground right after we bought our first camper. We had never used it before and I was a little nervous about all that had to be done as far as set up, break down and maintenance compared to a tent. Not only were Paul and Nancy extremely helpful when it came to that part of our stay, they were hospitable, fun and very friendly. It was a big step for our kids to try a different place than the only campground they have ever known and Paul and Nancy made it very easy. So much so, our youngest thanked God for how nice they were in his prayers the night we got home and all the kids said we have to go back; my wife and I agree.
If you prefer campgrounds where you stay up and party until 2am and can be as loud as you want, this is not the place for you. If you want a place where you can have a blast, relax, unwind and watch your kids play until they’re exhausted (and be safe while doing it), this is the place for you. I can not believe how quiet it is at 10pm and 8am, a very peaceful but also fun place. These 2 (Paul and Nancy) are doing perfect work for them and we are thankful for that. This really is an excellent place to take a family.

This is a nice facility, but the Male half of the ownership is extremely Rude, Unprofessional, and Confrontational to say the least. This was the worst stay in a campground ever! When they say quiet time is 10:30 that means go to bed! Two people whispering around a campfire is too loud. The Owner walks around the campground with his flashlight and will stop at the end of you site and if he can hear anything look out!!!!!!, this includes young children!!! In most encounters with him he seemed to be absolutely drunk and goes right to yelling and screaming. Do not stay here!!!

Response from bluegilllake, Owner at Bluegill Lake Campground
Responded Aug 8, 2013
Thank you for all of your opinions. This rebuttal is in response to all the criticism that stemmed from the J____ group (family reunion) that was at Bluegill Lake Family Camping Resort the first weekend of August 2013. Some points need to be clarified: First of all you group consisted of 17 sites and by your own admission over 100 guests. Groups of this size historically present their own sets of challenges, especially, when the majority fails to read and understand the campground expectations. These guidelines are put in place for the safety and consideration of everyone. Some points to consider: A multitude of expectations were totally ignored and difficult for us to ignore. As your group learned, quiet time is at 10:30, you were learning this point on Friday night and I absolutely wanted to make certain it was understood by Saturday night. A large group at the campsite (webster defines this as over 20) your group had over 50. The incredible amount of noise that your group generated having “fun” could be heard throughout the entire campground (15 acres large). The children running around after 10:30pm throughout the campground screaming and hollering has not place here, those children should have been supervised, but again, we were assuming you cared about the consideration of others, since you wouldn’t address it, we did. As ironic as it sounds, the “prayer circle” that your family had Saturday did in fact answer some of my prayers, and that was to keep your group quiet after 10:30pm. Furthermore, this insistence about me operating this campground while drunk is totally slanderous and if you’re not careful, prosecutable! To paraphrase a few quotes from your group, Mr. O___ stated, “Our group has never been invited back to a campground”, as well, your Aunt Deb, “We may not be a good fit for your campground”, and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Happy Trails, Paul

We were all excited to go camping this 4th of July weekend at Bluegill Lake Family Camping Resort in Mecosta. We had a blast staying there hanging around the fire, then going fishing in the mornings and evenings at lakes around the area. However, this all changed in an instant when one of the campground owners came back to our campsite. A visiting friend failing to check in at the office is what prompted the visit. The way one of the owners approached us about it and the tone of his voice, was the worst form of professionalism I've ever seen. He told our friend that he was trespassing and was to leave his property immediately. Our friend was given no warning, the owner was angrier and meaner than anyone I've ever seen. Since the campsite was in my name, he pointed at me with an angry face and motioned me over to him with his finger like I was 7. He began to threaten me with his anger that we were about to be kicked off his private property because of our friend. They have 0 tolerance I was told. When he sternly told me that I should have read the list of expectations they gave me, I calmly tried explaining to him that I was not given any such list. (When I registered at the office the day we arrived, they were in a hurry and there were changes to our invoice they had to make. So they had me sign a paper and I was camping). At that point he got even angrier, didn't believe me and told me to follow him to his office. I said I’d be there in a minute; let me grab my wallet just in case. He said no, now. So I went to the office where both campground owners were. I was treated with kindness and respect from the other owner. But I was then told by the guy, that he wouldn't mind getting rid of my kind and quality from his campground. If that wouldn't make you feel discriminated against or at least a piece of dung, you’re not human. But still trying to be nice (with my blood pressure sky high), I took the list of expectations that she gave me, said thank you and went back to camping. The next morning we had gotten over it and were all set to leave to go fishing. When my wife's Grandpa and Grandma pulled in to follow us to the lake to go fishing, then they were going to come back and eat lunch with us at our site. The owner told them that we were running a motel at our camp site and he would let them know if they could come back for lunch. We had 9 family members come visit us throughout the 4 days we stayed there. Which might sound like a lot for a campground, I’ll give him that. But anyone that stayed past 3 hours paid their $5 guest fee. But we weren’t going to let him ruin our 4th of July vacation. He wasn’t around the office when we got back at lunch time, but the other owner told them that if they weren’t there for the whole 3 hours for lunch, she would give them their $5 back for the guest fee. Then on our last day as I was driving out with my camper all packed up, I stopped by the office to see if I needed to sign anything, tell her bye, thanks for her hospitality and let them know the camp site was all cleaned up. Both the owners were there, after saying good bye, the guy walked outside the office with me and told me he personally would have liked a few minutes around the side of a building with my buddy. Then he told me that if he could fill that place with people that never fish, people of my kind and quality, his prayers would be answered and his job would be 1,000 times easier. When I asked him if he didn’t like fisherman, he said he doesn’t like people slaying their lake and he needs to protect his aquarium. He said their rates are higher than the other campgrounds in the area, to filter out the problems. He then said something again about us running a motel, I told him maybe I over looked it, but I didn’t see anything in their expectations about there being a limit on guests per site. He said I am going to help re-write their list of expectations for them. I don't understand how a business can stay in business with this kind of belittling, threatening, and discriminating ownership. But then again, the campground was only at about 60% capacity during the 4th of July weekend. We had our worst camping experience ever this past weekend and I feel terrible having to write a review like this, but I have never been treated like this in my life so I want to prevent this from happening to anyone else in the future by getting the word out there that one of the owners at Bluegill Lake Campground has quite the anger issue, is the worst professional I've ever seen and is just down right mean. On the other hand the other owner remained professional, civil, and was a delight to interact with.

Response from bluegilllake, Owner at Bluegill Lake Campground
Responded Jul 17, 2013
Derrick U, Thank you for your opinion. Our festive filled forth of July at Bluegill Lake was a resounding, spectacularly safe and enjoyable holiday for all guests, with the exception of one, yourself. There were children and guests of all ages over the road system and throughout the campground; on bikes, walking and jogging. Much to everyone's enjoyment, the weather was co-operative and our beach and lake (as reported by a long time "Seasonal Guest") was at a capacity never seen before. Over the course of the holiday, it had become increasingly obvious that you and your guests had not familiarized yourself with our posted (on the website), and printed set of expectations. You are correct in your ascertation that we are a Zero tolerance campground. Frankly, it disturbs us at Bluegill Lake to have to create a living document of Expectations, when we would like nothing more than to outline our Expectations with a one sentence statement, "No excessive or abusive behavior allowed" period. Unfortunately, due to people like yourself and your friends, we are forced to outline every step, procedure, and policy that we can think of to help curtail abuse. As well, with taxing guests such as yourself, we continue to learn more about our ignorance. We had watched your "friends" repeatedly violate our visitation policy, and admittedly we only corrected one other of your situations. Our final straw for tolerating your group's behavior came when one of your "visitors" went blazing thru our campground, drove past the beach, (speed in excess of 15 MPH), ignored our Stop sign located in front of our office (which I might add is in fact a DOT approved stop sign, at eye level), and speed up to your site, unauthorized, which I might add, at this juncture in his visit, he now is trespassing on private property. This being said, this educated young man, your friend, deserves no respect from me or any one or our staff, and frankly, I could have had him arrested and you and your party thrown out immediately with no warning or refund. For reference, it was Bluegill Lake who decided you were going to stay for the rest of the holiday. Singlehandedly, your "visitor/friend" jeopardized the safety and welfare of everyone roaming the campground. When approached at your site, he was boisterous and blatantly disrespectful of my request to leave immediately. To say I was infuriated was an understatement. With this being said, we thank you in advance for choosing to never stay here again, as well, we've advised all other local campgrounds of your existence. Happy Trails, Paul

Found this place in michigan campground directory book and thought we would try it out. I went with my wife, 2 kids, and dog. My parents went as well with their trailer. Now, I dont typically read or believe most of what is said in these reviews, but in case, it's true. 1st-Campground is very nice. Clean, level, shaded sites, peaceful, and safe. 2nd-The owners. Wife is very nice, friendly, and curteous. The husband. Nice when he wanted to be, but if you do anything he doesn't like, look out. I understand rules and the reasoning for them. I don't disagree with them. The problem is, if you do something he doesn't like, there is no hesitation, with him becoming rude and disrespectful. The way he goes about talking to you is not in a professional way. Nothing about is nice. It's rude and he makes you feel like you really did something horrible. I was fishing just before dark on a dock, which turned out to be private, with my ten year old daughter. He rode up on a bicycle with his hooded sweatshirt up and asked if I had permision to fish there. I said no, I didn't know I needed it because your wife said you guys own the whole lake. His response was "you could have asked" which he said multiple times rudely. Me, being a service manager for a dealership and deal with customers daily, can't phathom treating one of my customers that way. His approach is what's wrong with him, not what he is trying to do. He comes across as, I'm the boss, hear me roar type power trip. There was 1 other incident I witnessed but wasn't a part of so I will not comment on them other than saying what I said previously-his approach sucks!Overall it is a very nice campground but I will not return just because of him. They have about 100 very nice sites, but only roughly 20 filled. For such a nice campground, there must be a reason for this and I believe it's him. If you go, dot yours I's and cross your t's and you will have no problem. I was there with my family, which included a 2 1/2 month old baby, so I dont feel in any way I was there to create a problem, but that is how I left feeling. I was surely disapointed.

Thank you Gorbyadvisor for your opinion. As well, a round of applause for your “professional” assessment of the quality of this campground. As new owners of this beautiful campground we are striving to purge the park of guests such as yourself, who choose to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. Your kind fall into the category of “the abusive and excessive”, which I might add, is becoming fewer and fewer. Far and away, the vast majority of our guests continually praise and thank us for our continual effort in making Bluegill Lake a fun, safe and relaxing place to stay within a family type environment. My only regret is that I can’t advise your employer what type of person he has on staff, but I’m willing to bet they already suspect this. On a similar note, I thank you for advising other potential guests with behavior patterns such as yourself that they should heed your advise. With your on line presence, you are making our job of transforming our campground easier and easier. By the way, when you handed me a piece of equipment that you had wantonly destroyed, with the comment, “I’m sorry” and no offer to remediate the situation, you noticed that I had turned the other cheek and wrote the episode off as the cost of doing business, with no thanks from you for this professional behavior. I see that no good deed goes unpunished! Happy Trails, Paul.

If you stated the new owners are doing the best for this camp ground then you are related to them. My family and I have been camping here for a long time. I am shocked on the way these new owners treat people. They are nice at first but all you are is a paycheck. If you do or say one thing wrong he is in your face yelling and making a scene. He will then tell you to leave with no money back. i watched this owner yell and scream at a group of elderly people because they wanted to step up and help out another camper. the owner went crazy screaming that this was his camp ground (actually said that about 25 times) and when he says they are not to help people he means it or they are out of there. Are you kidding me? not normal behavior which is to bad because there are alot of good people there that camp that is until they leave. who can have fun with this owner?

As new owners we expected to uncover problems with the infrastructure as well as problematic guests. There are absolute chunks of detail missing from this review. It is so skewed that it borders on fiction. Not only do we embrace quality guests, we cherish them. Our mission has been and remains to be a safe and clean family friendly campground. We wish you the best of luck in future your camping endeavors.

In 4 years of camping w/ my friends this was the best run campground we've stayed at. The owners were friendly and knew who was coming and going so we felt safe leaving our stuff during the day. They made us feel more like friends than customers. They delivered wood right to our site and took care of any issues right away. The bathrooms were the cleanest campground bathrooms I've seen and even had music playing in them!

My family had a memorial to attend near Remus so we went online and searched for campgrounds nearby. We usually stay at state campgrounds where you never meet the people running the place and the bathrooms are scarey. We read the reviews for this one, which for this campground are of kind of funny. It was obvious the negative nellies just don't like rules. No problem for us.
A few of our favorite things:
The rules that ensued the most civilized family camping experience ever. Have you ever camped and had loud obnoxious people right next to you and it ruins your whole trip? That would NEVER happen at this place. This is definitely a family friendly campground.
The owners. So friendly and approachable. We felt like old friends by the end of our four day weekend. They clearly love their campground and go above and beyond to make the place nice.
What they did when I actually broke a rule...I confess!!! Dogs must be on a leash. Totally fair. I wouldn't want someone else's dog coming up on us. But they have this gorgeous trail that goes around the lake. Most of the trail is deep in the woods. So I let me dog off leash so she could run. What did she do? She ran right into a skunk and got sprayed. I was in a panic wondering from those negative nellies if we were about to be kicked out before we made it to our memorial because how obvious this would be. Right as I was telling my husband, the owner Paul came cruising by on his four wheeler. My husband flagged him down and asked him how to get rid of the skunk smell -- that was only on my dog and not me! Not one word about me breaking the rules. Instead he and his staff put their minds together with what resources they had and ended up giving me Dawn detergent that cuts grease from their own kitchen. It actually worked. They had a good laugh about it the rest of the weekend.
The inflatibles. My kids LOVED them. Hours of fun and exercise. My husband and I even went on them too. We had plenty of opportunities to have them to ourselves. It wasn't like a busy city pool.
The lake. Mist rolling on it in the morning. Canoeing around it (only $7!) and checking out the turtles. Swimming in the clean water. The sandy bottom between the shore and the inflatible. Still a lake but at the swimming area there was no weedy scarey stuff. The depth! 15 feet deep off the inflatible so the kids could go nuts with diving and cannonballs.
The trail. Minus the skunk that Paul said he may try to capture and release elsewhere. Although it was cute! I jogged the trail. I loved it that it was a perfect mile around so I could train for a race. I just couldn't get enough of that trail. A mile is a nice distance too for a family to take a walk. But I was grateful for the DEET. The bugs loved my sweaty head.
The store. They seemed to have the right things and at the right prices. No gouging there. And it was fun talking with the owners.
The bathrooms. Clean! Four toilets, five sinks, three showers. Each shower has a changing area before the shower. We usually had it to ourselves. They had nice music in there too. And the water temperature. You like hot, you get hot!!! If it's not hot enough, they want to know because they can switch it to the next huge hot water tank. They even have a sign that they WANT to know if the bathroom needs attention.
The cabins. Cute! The owner gave me a tour. Paul built them himself. Log cabins. Two bunks and a double. Microwave, cute little table, little refrigerator, right on the water.
The emergency. Before we even came camping my poor husband started itching all over. He thought it was his deoderant so he quit that. Then it spread all over his body. He was frantically ithing himself and trying to tough it out by our last night. It was close to 10:00 pm when we all had enough of the camper bouncing and his misery. So I went to the store and did a you-hoo and knock knock at their house part. The owner and her assistant came out. They opened the store and gave us children's Benadryl (on our tab...which was cool!) because it absorbs the quickest. He was out like a light and sawing logs, but not itching himself and all of us silly. We were grateful!
Mecosta. What a one horse town! But we discovered two gems there. The party store that sells the subs, per the advice of the owners. Honestly the best subs EVER! Huge!!! They put Jimmie Johns and Subway totally to shame. Homemade fresh bread and did I say HUGE! Delicious. My other discovery was the used book store. Floor to ceiling interesting books through tiny little passageways. The owner looks like a white bearded wizard right out of Harry Potter. I asked him which King Louis was married to Marie Antoinette and he was able to answer and take me right to his French Revolution fiction and nonfiction. Then my 9 year old had a request. He dug through boxes upstairs and in his store across the street and found that little book. I was shocked. It was so fun I could have stayed for hours.
We had a great time -- skunk and hives and all! We can't wait to return!

In the 50 plus years I have been camping I have never experienced such rudeness. The owner Paul seriously needs to take a hospitality class along with a anger management. The first thing, he told my husband and 7 year grandson to be expecting there equipment to be scrutinized when they got off the pond from fishing and he did just that. The next was a man was pulling his boat to go fishing at a near by lake he got down the hill the office where Paul came fly out yelling and screaming at the man that he was going the wrong way instead of just simply tell the man your going to wrong way please don't do it again he made him back his boat up the hill around the kids activity center where there were tons of kids playing. But wait it gets better the campers next to us daughter came up to visit which her parent had registered her at the office earlier. So the daughter pulls in not knowing that she had to stop and pick up a tag. Drove in and found her parents. Before she could even get out of her car there was Paul beating on her window Once again yelling and screaming at her that she didn't get her tag. Which as you could imagine scared her. Than to top it off he started mocking her .. I bet you guess how mad her dad was..Which no could blame him As it turned out Paul kick them out ... Really over a tag. You can bet we will never go back .. Kris
