Our 3-day stay at the Kalamazoo House B&B was the highlight of our 10-day swing through Michigan. Not only is the Kalamazoo House gorgeous and comfortable in every way, its location is ideal for enjoying the city's vibrant downtown. The art museum, public library, parks, restaurants, cafes, breweries, wineries, and shopping are within easy and safe walking distance. Speaking of safe, proprietors Laurel and Terry Parrott meticulously clean and sanitize all areas of the B&B throughout the day to minimize any risk of exposure to germs and COVID. Guests are seated at tables well apart from each other to enjoy Terry's amazing breakfasts in the two beautiful dining rooms. Our breakfasts were so delicious and filling that we were able to skip lunches. Our room was well-appointed with everything we needed and then some to assure a comfortable and pampered experience. I have stayed at many, many B&Bs and Kalamazoo House ranks at the top of the list.

Convenient, contactless check-in (keypad/lock), clean and comfortable room, friendly host, yummy breakfast. They take care to "extra sanitize" things like the tv remote in the room. The breakfast area tables are spaced out and you have to schedule your breakfast time (2 seatings and take away available) to minimize the contact/interaction. Obviously taking pains to make your stay enjoyable, while being attentive to pandemic precautions/safety.

This delightful B&B was perfect down to the last detail. The building is lovely, the front porch a delightful place to sit. Breakfast was delicious. My room was on the third floor, but very cool and comfortable on a hot day. The room had a phone charger (adaptable to both apple and android), a water carafe, easy places to plug things in, a very comfy bed and pillows, thick robes and towels, and mints on the pillows. There are cookies awaiting you when you arrive!! I can't recommend this place enough.

I have stayed at the Kalamazoo house two times now and both sets of my parents have also stayed there. We all absolutely adore the place. These owners definitely know what they are doing, every detail as been addressed. Daily baked goods in the entry way, noise makers in the rooms, umbrellas ready to borrow, etc. We had free run of the game room and the bar and it was nice to play bar tender and mingle with the other guests. The breakfasts were absolutely phenomenal. I loved that you had separate tables to eat at, a large time frame to decide when you wanted to eat and the option of several breakfast choices. The housekeeper we joked was the "ghost of the house" because you rarely saw him but in a good way, he was only there when you actually needed him. The owners were there on occasion and were always extremely welcoming. We even saw them out at a local restaurant and they sent over a round of beers. Just the most hospitable place with ever need accounted for while giving you the freedom and privacy you desire in a B&B getaway. We plan on getting several rooms for my graduation and I'm so very excited about that.

This inn is in the heart of downtown and so close to anything happening! It is in a safe neighborhood and gives you quick and easy access. There is such a historical feel to the building, so much character. We came for our anniversary and we had fresh and delicious chocolate chip cookies for us upon arrival. The couple was lovely, friendly, and down-to-earth. We loved our breakfast in the morning which was cooked to order and set out beautifully. We had a bruleed banana and yogurt which I don't normally like, but really won me over. There were TWO courses to breakfast which made me feel spoiled. The room itself had a huge king bed which was very comfortable, including a heated blanket, a fireplace, reading lights, many digital services on the tv, a carafe for water, a couple of chairs to read in, and a wealth of ambience from a room that made us feel like royalty! The bathroom was large and well-maintained with a jacuzzi. There are bathrobes in the room for your use, which are so nice. It was extremely quiet and peaceful. Will definitely come back! THANK YOU!

We would give Kalamazoo House ten stars if we could. We travel at least 100 days a year and we can honestly say this is one of the best B&Bs we’ve stayed at.Everything was just perfect. Easy parking, easy self check-in. We were met by Steve the host who was most welcoming. Everything is there for you: a variety of teas and coffee and fresh cookies.
The house is just amazing, period but not old and musty. It is shining clean. The room was spacious and well furnished, crisp bed linens, piles of towels. We had a two-person jacuzzi bath and a shower for those who don’t like bathtubs. In the morning we felt lady and lord of the manor, being served a luxurious breakfast in the parlor. There were gluten free items especially for me. This B&B is highly recommended by us to any traveler.

Looking for a get-a-way weekend, we discovered a B&B offering a mystery night! Kalamazoo House has a very informative website including pictures and descriptions of all the rooms. We picked the Marquette room which had a very comfortable bed and cozy fireplace.

The Inn is in the heart of downtown and in a safe neighborhood. You are given a door code, easy check in, and free onsite parking. There are coffee and tea stations and complimentary sodas as well as early evening fresh baked cookies.

Amy and Jeff were friendly and accommodating, even having gluten free options for my husband. A two course breakfast was served and was scrumptious. We had a fun time meeting other couples and enjoyed a wonderful relaxing stay.

We heartily recommend this B&B – the best experience for us yet!

We stayed at the Kalamazoo House over New Years weekend, and it was the perfect location for attending New Years Eve Fest in Bronson Park and visiting various other locations downtown. We stayed in the Kalamazoo Room, which was beautiful, cozy, and very comfortable. We added some of the extra packages for bonus luxury, which were well worth the cost (champagne and chocolate covered strawberries on our room upon arrival, in room breakfast service). All the food and drink was delicious, and the service was top notch. The Christmas decorations around the inn were a nice touch for this time of year. This Victorian inn is well kept and maintained and makes for a restful vacation spot. During your stay, be sure to make reservations at Principle Food and Drink, less than 10 minute walk away, for amazing food and cocktails. On the Kalamazoo House website, there is a referral for A’vie Salon and Spa, where we booked the best massages we’ve ever had. Be sure to visit Water Street Coffee, and a local brewery or winery (plenty to choose from). To experience all Kalamazoo has to offer, you won’t regret staying at the Kalamazoo House!

My wife and I have stayed at many B&B's over the 40 plus years we've traveled together and stayed at B&B's.
Over those years, we have noticed a shift in the quality of the B&B experience that is not good and our recent experience at the Kalamazoo House reinforces our conclusion that the B&B experience has changed for the worse in many instances.
To support this conclusion are the following details from our stay:

1. The breakfast options the first day of our night stay were "Belgian waffle and sausage or an egg Frittata with mushrooms drizzled with a brown sauce". The waffle was served with some sort of red sauce drizzled on it and some sort of syrup served on the side. The waffle was burned black on the bottom side, which was observed when I lifted a piece to eat. You don't serve burned food to your guests. The frittata tasted like sugar had been added to the brown sauce, which rendered also inedible. We did not say anything about the food because if they thought this was food fit to serve, there wasn't any point in mentioning it.

2. The owners were mostly absent and not very hospitable in the limited amount of time that they were visibly present. The owners check-in instructions mentioned that we should "text" them if there are any issues even though they lived in the coach house at the back of the property. The owners appeared disinterested in having interaction with their guests during breakfast service or at any other times during our stay. Reservations were handled by internet rather than telephone.

3. The furnishings of the B&B were very limited and did not feel in keeping with the historic nature of the building. There were no special touches consistent with other B&B's that we have experienced over the years, such as at the Old Rittenhouse Inn in Bayfield, Wisconsin or the Scofield House in Door County, Wisconsin.

4. The experience we can best compare the Kalamazoo House to is that of staying at an Air BnB in someone's home where the owner does nothing to make it and you feel special. I don't know if the owners have had training on operating a B&B. Maybe they have, but it doesn't get reflected in how they operate theirs. The large chain hotel two blocks east of the Kalamazoo House, which costs the same, is in some ways nicer and at least you know what you're getting and not getting.

Hello Gregory. Amy and I are surprised and disheartened by your review. Not sure how much engagement you were looking for as you checked in after hours, and left early the first morning, I presume, to go exploring. We did greet you both the next morning. I asked you directly how your stay was, you smiled politely and stated everything was good. Every bed and breakfast is different, we all have our own style and personal touches we share with guests. A responsible bed and breakfast owner must be willing to change and adopt in order to continue providing the best and safest experience for guests. At our bed and breakfast, Amy, a professionally trained culinarian, arranges daily a full descriptive menu. Guests write down their entrée choice and select their breakfast meat, then Chef Amy will prepares accordingly to dietary requirements. Amy and I are hands on with every facet of this bed and breakfast, we tell all our guests if we are not visible, because we are running errands, attending community meetings, or at home eating lunch/dinner, to text us as it is the fast way to get to us. Our lifelong motto, a well-informed guest is a happy guest. Have a pleasant and safe summer. Jeff and Amy

We stayed here during the Gilmore Car Museum's Model A Days, and it was a great way to end our trip to Michigan! The house is in a wonderful location downtown and easily within walking distance to a variety of restaurants, the Kalamazoo Mall, and the beautiful Bronson Park right down the road. During breakfast we asked Jeff if there were any historic homes nearby, and as busy as he was, he took the time to print off directions and information about the stately homes right down the street and another area nearby that we could drive to.

Breakfast was delicious, offering a choice of something sweet like french toast or a savory frittata, etc.

The house itself is beautiful and the interesting history is posted on the wall across from a lovely parlor that is complete with a piano, fireplace, and plenty of books about Kalamazoo to enjoy. Freshly baked cookies await the guests in the evening along with a beverage bar with hot coffee, tea, and soft drinks.

We stayed in the spotlessly clean and spacious Mackinac Room that has a jacuzzi style tub/shower. The king size bed is extremely comfortable.

We enjoyed talking to both Amy and Jeff. They are the perfect host and hostess and we hope to return again the next time we are in the area.

The Kalamazoo House has an eclectic and awesome history in Kalamazoo, and the Donovan family (some of whom recently visited) and their funeral home operations during the middle part of 20th Century are a great part of that story; it's noted on our history page on the web site. That history is also being included in a new and more extensive handout that history-minded guests and visitors will have on hand. Still, while it's not uncommon for us to share a detailed house's history for those who ask or express interest beyond basics (# of rooms and year built, and by whom)--and Garrett may have done so in this case--most commonly our check-ins tours are guest-focused on the present: orientations on locations of amenities, accoutrements, ingress/egress, area attractions, and the nuances of various breweries and restaurants. Not totally sure if you meant to be specific to that check-in, but hope that gives you what you needed.

Is the Kalamazoo House B&B pet friendly?
Answer from Steve G
Kalamazoo9 contributions4 helpful votes
Thanks for asking. Sadly, and although we have two dogs and are dog lovers ourselves (our apartment is detached, over the carriage house), the B&B is a pet-free environment. It has been for so long that many guests with allergies and sensitivities count it remaining so. Again, thanks for checking, and we'd love to have you stay if there is an alternative workaround for you. Cheers.
