Hosts were great, efficient and warm. Room was spacious and comfortable. Copper (their great Dane) was a star. Close to Black River Harbor and other summer hiking. This was our first trip to the Lodge and we definitely will return.
Staying at Black River Lodge felt like staying a friend’s house instead of staying at a hotel. We stayed in #24 (snowed in). The room was clean with everything we needed, including a powerful in window AC unit. Brittany and Justin made us feel at home and had lots of great local sightseeing advice. We brought our 2 year old dog with us and there was tons of space on the property for him to run out his energy and sniff around without getting in other guest’s way. There is even a trail to walk down to the river on the property. The location is great with lots of local hiking, waterfalls and beaches only a few miles away with only an hour to the Apostle Islands. Next time we’ll plan a little better and bring groceries to cook dinners ourselves in the well supplied community kitchen/bbq as there is a lack of dog friendly local restaurants (some were completely closed due to lack of staffing). The fire pits were great to stargaze at night with a supply of wood provided for us. We will definitely be back to this wonderful escape!…
We were blown away by the service! Their expert knowledge of the area turned an average trip into an unforgettable one! Clean, safe and quiet. It’s a work in progress, but I have no doubt it’s going to be great because it already is. Will definitely be back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our night in the Gitche-Gami room at BRL. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable. The pictures on the website don't do it justice! Although we've been to Ironwood many times on our way to the Porkies over the past 20 years, we've never stayed there on our journey. We're so happy we changed that. Brittany told us about the harbor and falls just a few miles away, which allowed us to enjoy a sunrise viewing of both. She also had some great suggestions for supper -- places we have heard of or tried. Again, her recommendations were spot on! We're excited to have BRL as an additional lodging option for journeys to the UP twice a year. I'm sure they'll see us again!
Brittany and Justin do a great job of keeping the place clean and welcoming guests. Brittany was able to supply us with firewood starter which came in handy considering my brother used a two pack up for one fire. We plan to stay there next time!
The lodge is perfect for skiing access and the area is great for sightseeing/hiking. The service was wonderful and Brittany was always available if needed. While the lodge is a little dated, it was extremely clean and well kept. It was perfect that they allow pets as our Golden had a great time in the snow at the lodge, but we didn't get to meet Copper!
We found Black River Lodge just a week prior to fleeing to North just after Christmas. The hosts are nothing short of amazing and accommodating in every way. Our trip to the YOOP was perfect thanks to BRL. Our room was cozy and quaint. We were allowed to use the community kitchen for cooking. Entertainment galore via chatting with other guests and our lovely hosts, plenty of board games, and a puzzle in the common area. The pool towels were clean and folded, the rooms and facilities were exceptionally clean, and the grounds were easily accessible and very pretty. We will be back again and again. Our weimaraner loved here time with their great dane Copper once she calmed down from the 15 hour ride North. Thank you for the memories this time around and look forward to staying here again. Plenty of snowmobile riders staying here during our stay. The road was snow and ice packed for the entire route to the trails and everyone I spoke to were quite happy with the short ride to the trail. Close to all the waterfalls, the lake, and all the necessities but out far enough away from everyone to disconnect. From hostel rooms to multi room family units. This place may not be for those looking for the latest finishes, spa treatments, and trendy drinks, but it was more than perfect for us.…
Very nice pet friendly lodge. We were traveling with our black lab and needed a room that would allow pets. We hit gold with Black River Lodge! They are not far from Ironwood and Bessemer and lots of things to do or see. The room was small per my selection - they have everything from suites to a hostel area - but the bed was very comfortable. If we're ever back in the area than this would be where I would stay.
I booked a room here for the lodge's proximity to Copper Peak since I was planning to do the Red Bull 400. Through the initial postponement and eventual cancellation of the race, Brittany was very communicative and helpful so I decided to keep my reservation. Very glad I did. My girlfriend, our Goldendoodle, and I had a quick but incredibly relaxing weekend at the lodge. Cozy accommodations, great hospitality from Brittany and Justin (and Copper), and beautiful surroundings. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Hoping to come back soon!
We came. Stayed. Changed our whole perspective on life and stuff. Mysteriously, it was fully both an inward and outward encounter. Therapeutic. Authentic. Both the lodge, and it's owners. The owners are super accomodating; forthright, virtuous, good willed and empathetic. The surrounding areas are charming this time of year; breathtaking during winter. We brought our toddler with us who is almost 3. Trails nearbye are mostly safe. There's a U.S. Forest Harbor (Black River Harbor), picnic area and beach just north of this lodge. I had a chance to speak with the U.S. Forest engineers on the Harbor. They are re-constructing the Harbor since a storm damaged it some years ago. Project has been in award for 3 years and is a $1.8 Million. Design changes are causing delays. They appeared to be about 50% done at the time. The harbor apparently sustains some commercial fishing in the area, mainly from the local tribes. Will be open for recreational fishing upon completion. It's also considered an international port according to the Engineers, so the harbor will apparently accomodate international transportation to Canada. We took little one out the Black River Harbor and crossed the Depresstion era pedestrian tension bridge over the harbor and onto the beach for the day. she loved it. The waves were big enough to create a constant ocean wave effect. We were all mesmerized by it. Sun was shining. Water was warm enough to waddle. She loved the nearbye forest trails that led to Gorgic and Potawatomi Water falls. All these areas are among the Ottawa National Forest. Toddler was charmed by all the nature. We noticed she was much calmer amongst it. I would say winters are more interesting here than say Tahoe or Big Bear or Arrowhead. Lake Effect snow gives this place such a glorious and mysterious beauty that it reminds me of Alaska in many ways. The roads too. Since they're not plowed, but sanded, best to have decent tires when coming up here. Will be back in Winter.…
