Black River Lodge has been a staple family destination for traveler's looking to explore the beauty of Ironwood and the Western U.P. of Michigan for decades. The lodge is a one of a kind in the Ironwood area... a hidden gem with lots of U.P. charm. We are not a standard style hotel. While we have some similar amenities, we operate much different and our layout/rooms are unique. The lodge is not considered upscale, but cozy and homey (after all, it is our year 'round home). The atmosphere is more laid back and social. Consider it along the lines of a very large house/chalet with a few perks. Our rooms are unique and sleep 2-10 people depending on the unit. All have at least one or two private bathrooms. Some have kitchens or 4 or more beds to maximize savings. Group friendly. Dog Friendly. Family Friendly. The lodge offers a large indoor pool/hot tub, a fully stocked resort-style bar, 65 acres in a remote locale and a few different common areas to relax with your family and friends.

The lodge is perfect for skiing access and the area is great for sightseeing/hiking. The service was wonderful and Brittany was always available if needed. While the lodge is a little dated, it was extremely clean and well kept. It was perfect that they allow pets as our Golden had a great time in the snow at the lodge, but we didn't get to meet Copper!

We found Black River Lodge just a week prior to fleeing to North just after Christmas. The hosts are nothing short of amazing and accommodating in every way. Our trip to the YOOP was perfect thanks to BRL. Our room was cozy and quaint. We were allowed to use the community kitchen for cooking. Entertainment galore via chatting with other guests and our lovely hosts, plenty of board games, and a puzzle in the common area. The pool towels were clean and folded, the rooms and facilities were exceptionally clean, and the grounds were easily accessible and very pretty. We will be back again and again. Our weimaraner loved here time with their great dane Copper once she calmed down from the 15 hour ride North. Thank you for the memories this time around and look forward to staying here again. Plenty of snowmobile riders staying here during our stay. The road was snow and ice packed for the entire route to the trails and everyone I spoke to were quite happy with the short ride to the trail. Close to all the waterfalls, the lake, and all the necessities but out far enough away from everyone to disconnect. From hostel rooms to multi room family units. This place may not be for those looking for the latest finishes, spa treatments, and trendy drinks, but it was more than perfect for us.

Very nice pet friendly lodge. We were traveling with our black lab and needed a room that would allow pets. We hit gold with Black River Lodge! They are not far from Ironwood and Bessemer and lots of things to do or see. The room was small per my selection - they have everything from suites to a hostel area - but the bed was very comfortable. If we're ever back in the area than this would be where I would stay.

So glad we were able to help as your pet friendly destination. Also, good to hear the room worked out! Some are surprised by our interior queens, but we try really hard to advertise them appropriately as a small, budget option. Would love to have you try out one of our larger guest rooms next time. I think you'd like one of our single King guestrooms. Thanks again for supporting our small business! See you next time.

I booked a room here for the lodge's proximity to Copper Peak since I was planning to do the Red Bull 400. Through the initial postponement and eventual cancellation of the race, Brittany was very communicative and helpful so I decided to keep my reservation. Very glad I did. My girlfriend, our Goldendoodle, and I had a quick but incredibly relaxing weekend at the lodge. Cozy accommodations, great hospitality from Brittany and Justin (and Copper), and beautiful surroundings. My only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Hoping to come back soon!

We're glad you kept your reservation too! I think you made it on one of the best fall weekends we have seen in a long time. So glad you all got to experience it and get some much needed relaxation in. Fingers crossed the Red Bull 400 is back on next spring and we get to see you again. It was a pleasure hosting you. Thanks for your support.

We came. Stayed. Changed our whole perspective on life and stuff. Mysteriously, it was fully both an inward and outward encounter. Therapeutic. Authentic. Both the lodge, and it's owners. The owners are super accomodating; forthright, virtuous, good willed and empathetic. The surrounding areas are charming this time of year; breathtaking during winter. We brought our toddler with us who is almost 3. Trails nearbye are mostly safe. There's a U.S. Forest Harbor (Black River Harbor), picnic area and beach just north of this lodge. I had a chance to speak with the U.S. Forest engineers on the Harbor. They are re-constructing the Harbor since a storm damaged it some years ago. Project has been in award for 3 years and is a $1.8 Million. Design changes are causing delays. They appeared to be about 50% done at the time. The harbor apparently sustains some commercial fishing in the area, mainly from the local tribes. Will be open for recreational fishing upon completion. It's also considered an international port according to the Engineers, so the harbor will apparently accomodate international transportation to Canada. We took little one out the Black River Harbor and crossed the Depresstion era pedestrian tension bridge over the harbor and onto the beach for the day. she loved it. The waves were big enough to create a constant ocean wave effect. We were all mesmerized by it. Sun was shining. Water was warm enough to waddle. She loved the nearbye forest trails that led to Gorgic and Potawatomi Water falls. All these areas are among the Ottawa National Forest. Toddler was charmed by all the nature. We noticed she was much calmer amongst it. I would say winters are more interesting here than say Tahoe or Big Bear or Arrowhead. Lake Effect snow gives this place such a glorious and mysterious beauty that it reminds me of Alaska in many ways. The roads too. Since they're not plowed, but sanded, best to have decent tires when coming up here. Will be back in Winter.
