This is an older hotel but it is very well maintained and the room was comfortable. The rooms are accessible from an outdoor balcony instead of a hallway so if it is snowing, as it was when we were there, the stairs and balcony will have snow and wind to contend with. We were there for the UP200 dogsled race and so the weather was as expected. Very friendly office staff, and the convenient location made walking to dinner and breakfast all part of our enjoyable time there.

This is the second time I have stayed at the Beach Park Motel. I was worried the first time I stayed at the Park in 2021. Some of the reviews tho dated were not favorable. However, management changed hands and I think that made all the difference. I will tell you both of my stays 2022 and 2023 were wonderful. I am planning to stay again in 2024. This is Yooper country. My room was clean and well appointed. This is not a spa or a resort but I would give it a 5 out of 5. I certainly would recommend this to friends and family. Its centrally located...nice staff...clean..quick walk to the beach...come see Grand Marais.

It's not grand, and it's not spectacular, but it's a perfect little place to stay in Grand Marias. Plenty of room, comfortable beds, and clean yet dated bathrooms. The flooring looks new, the furniture is adequate, the TVs are modern smart TVs, WIFI, hairdryer, coffee maker, mini fridge, and microwave. By UP standards it's well above average.

It's centrally located in a quiet town on a bay with a beach/shoreline just steps away. Nice unobstructed windows facing west for pretty sunset views. Nice fairly new lodge pole tavern across the street. An amazingly good breakfast place two doors down. There is a brewpub, gas station, sports outfitters, and a couple of other shops.

Plenty of parking for trucks pulling trailers. Great for snowmobiles with trails heading out of town in three directions.

Our room was very clean, tastefully decorated, and appears to have been recently refurbished. The manager was friendly and accommodating. There was a lovely view of the bay from our window. Bed was comfortable. Price was reasonable. We will definitely be back!

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It was $96 for one night and wasn't worth even half of that. There were stains on the bedspreads (ewww), holes in the towels and the room was freezing when we checked in. The bathroom is seriously outdated and also freezing no matter what the room temp was.

I would not stay here if they paid me. The person who took my phone call was very rude. All I did was question their fee for pets. He told me to go someplace else if I could do better, so that is exactly what I'm doing. If they run this business being rude, then I'm shocked there still in business.

We love to travel over to the U.P. around the South Shore of Lake Superior when we drive up to see family at “the other end of Lake Superior”. We planned our stay ahead, our reservations were made over the phone and everything sounded perfect for the two of us. The rate of $105 (I hope Im quoting that right) it might have been $108 plus tax, but sounded about average for the advertised room and amenities, which included a continental breakfast. It was a terribly outdated room, horrible bed, old linens, bad WiFi connection and no place to plug our phone chargers in. My husbands insulin needed to be refrigerated and to our surprise we turned off the fridge by turning off a light switch by the door. The “inroom coffee” was tasteless as brown hot water. Don’t waste your time even figuring out the cheap little coffee maker.
The bathtub appeared very dirty and we quickly figured out why. It was not draining properly and apparently hadn’t for quite some time. Very unpleasant not to mention unsanitary!
There was no staff to be found when we arrived to check in at 5ish PM, our names were written on pieces of paper taped to a board outside with a key. (So much for privacy) The disclaimer on the info sheet DID say “continental breakfast offered MOST mornings”! Hah! That certainly did not match the advertising we saw.
I received some generic canned response when I posted to the John the owner on their Social Media page.....we will NOT stay here again.

Response from Y6968IJdianav, Owner at Beach Park Motel
Responded Oct 26, 2018
Dear jchickman ‘ We take pride in our motel and do a lot of the work ourselves, striving to ensure clean comfortable rooms for all of our guests. It is always difficult to read or hear negative comments about something you really care about in life, especially when you are not given an opportunity to address or resolve issues, perceived or actual, in person. For us, we do not feel that FB or online forums such as these allow us to effectively address complaints from guests, especially when our goal is to find satisfactory resolution DURING their stay. Perhaps it is a sign of the times, that people avoid talking to one another in person and use online methods to vent rather than seek resolution. We gave you a full refund already, but here goes… Yes, we responded minimally to your first negative response on FB with a brief but true apology but it did not seem to satisfy you as you refer to it as a “canned response”. As the other half of the ‘discussion’, we would have appreciated the opportunity to ‘discuss’ any issues BEFORE you departed the “worst place [you’ve] ever stayed in Upper Michigan” and we did not feel that engaging in further dialog would resolve anything. But based on your negative review above, that seemed to escalate your ire. Our mistake, and one we to hope to rectify, at least to assure others who read your review that we are not disinterested owners but actually very keen on providing great travelling experiences. We are not perfect. Sometimes we miss the mark but we strive to make amends not just because guest satisfaction is a business goal but because we like making people happy. Pay it forward and you get it back. We are not sure how to make you happy, but the majority of our guests give us great feedback about how much they enjoyed their stay with us. Our motel is older. Despite our diligence and continued improvements, once in a while things go wrong. We can usually find a way to minimize any inconvenience to our guests, given the chance to do so. We think that we learned of your drain issue as you were getting into your vehicle to leave. Had we known earlier that morning, we would have offered the use of another room to have a nice hot shower most assuredly in a clean tub, even though you were leaving that morning. Because it’s the right thing to do. Some fixtures are dated, but they are clean, functional and comfortable. Linens are all newer throughout the motel. We do not wrap our beds in the manner of big brand hotels, because we like the at home feel that our updated bedspreads provide. Guess it’s not your cup of tea though. We believe we deliver our guests an environment for a good nights sleep. Your husband came into the lobby at least once that morning, where we our standard continental breakfast of juice, coffee, cold cereal, oatmeal, toast, fresh fruit and breakfast bars was available. It seems you wanted something more, but we are not licensed to prepare food. Our breakfast items are chosen to ensure that what we serve is as fresh as possible, not stale. We live in a remote area where supplies can be scarce. The closest bakery is an hour away, so perhaps you can better understand why we didn’t have sweet rolls during your stay. As far as our WIFI, we do not recall any issues with it during your stay and received no other complaints. Perhaps you meant that cell reception was terrible, which it is once you come down into town. There are many areas in the UP that are currently underserved by cell service and Grand Marais is one of them. However, that is not within our control. But if you did have an issue with our WIFI, given the chance, we would have taken steps to correct it asap… it takes 5 minutes for a router to reboot. As for a place to plug in your chargers, most of our guests have outlet adaptors for their cords. We have a variety of adaptors for guests to use if they don’t have theirs with them… just like other hotels, if you forgot something, let us know, we might have it. A standard coffee maker operates pretty much the same doesn’t it? Pour in water, put the coffee pod in the basket and turn on? We are confused by your comment, as you successfully produced “tasteless brown hot water”. Most of our guests are quite happy with their in-room coffee. Not sure why yours was so weak unless there was a bad packet. We would have made you a pot of coffee as black as tar and brought it to your room if that would have helped you enjoy your stay better, if given the chance. We were not in the office when you arrived, trips for supplies are events when you live in Grand Marais. We have an easy ‘self-check-in’ so that guests can make themselves at home. When we returned, we found that you had successfully found your room with a single key inside. We are confused by your comment about privacy. No one could get into your room after you arrived, assuming you locked your door when you left. It may be a bit different, but it works. We protect and respect our guest’s privacy. It is frustrating to have missed some opportunities to have improved your stay, for want of discussing things and finding satisfactory resolutions. Thankfully most of our guests must be misguided and are quite happy with their stay with us and shockingly enough even dare to risk coming back again. It’s a great feeling as owners when our returning guests notice the changes we’ve made and appreciate our efforts. Perhaps someday you will return to the area, and we can change your opinion, both with our service and our continued improvements, like the new entry doors we just put in!

The location is ideal. This is a VERY small town so you are close to everything you need (i.e. food). The beds were perhaps the worse beds I have ever slept upon. The linens "may have been" clean, but decades old
