Many guests commend the Terrace Bay Hotel for its exceptional service, with staff members frequently recognized for their friendliness and professionalism. The hotel's amenities, including an on-site restaurant and coffee shop, alongside the comfortable rooms with scenic views, are generally well-received, although some areas could use enhancement. The cleanliness of the hotel is a consistent point of praise, with immaculate rooms and well-kept grounds. Opinions on value are divided; some guests consider the hotel affordable and appreciate its stunning lakeside location, while others feel the costs are steep for the experience provided. The atmosphere and decor of the hotel earn compliments, but suggestions for a cozier vibe are noted. Room experiences are largely positive, thanks to their cleanliness and spaciousness, yet some guests have encountered issues with noise due to ongoing construction.

We so badly wanted to love our stay at Terrace Bay. We understood the hotel was under construction, but keeping the rooms cleans AND the grounds (the parking lot, the yard and patios) should be a priority to make a seriously good impression of what guests can expect upon the completion of their construction. In addition, the doors to the hallways need to be locked - anyone can walk in and have access to the interior of the hotel.

We did eat on the outdoor patio at the restaurant and the food and service was stellar! We were impressed with the care our waitress took to keep a nice distance (I am sure she saw us in masks as we arrived) and we were impressed with the staff wearing a new pair of gloves to serve our food. The chef checking on guests showed what great care is going into the wonderful menu. The view of the bay is lovely.

We stayed in a first floor roadside room so our family could unload/load via the exterior door and our whole family did not have to traverse the interior (we are continuing to be "covid smart"). The room walls and upper floor are very, very thin. If you are a light sleeper, we would suggest requesting a bay view room on an end to minimize the noise from other guests.

Our family appreciates what is trying to be achieved at Terrace Bay with the renovation and updating of a run down hotel/motel and would consider coming here for a future stay if in the area if the construction was complete and everything was cleaned up.

We had a few issues. Stayed 3 nights. There was a stain on the box spring that was super disgusting and when we told staff they sprayed it with disinfectant and didn’t clean it. We had a shower that had a mind of its own, the cold water knob would turn itself up all the way and freeze us out of the shower. Told staff nothing happened. The bar cost $50 for 2 shots that were half full and 3 bud lights. The toilet didn’t flush anything down unless it was flushed 2 or 3 times. Pool was so so just really dirty and floor was coming apart. Sauna didn’t work hardly at all. When we booked they said there would be free breakfast and that just so happened to end an hour into our first morning. So we had to spend a ton of money going out to breakfast. Room number on escape plan was not even our room number

I loved the renovated look. The photos on the walls are of places in the UP and the color scheme was perfect. The rooms are nice and bright and I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a hotel that didn’t have carpet so that was a nice touch. One of the downsides was the specific location of our room. We didn’t have an actual balcony and the pool room juts out in front of the room so you get half the view. Not a deal breaker but I think if people are picking a lake view room, they should be warned they are getting only half the view and not a true balcony. Also... maybe tint the windows. We could see straight into the pool room and they could see straight into our room so unfortunately we had to keep the blinds closed our entire stay. The only other downside was the bathroom remodel. There was not much changed in the bathroom at all. We enjoyed our stay and of course would stay again!

Oct 23, 2021 Stay… I can only blame myself so thinking $286.00 was going to be “worth it” for one Saturday night stay not sure what I was expecting. We choose a remodeled room which seemed clean but pretty much had just a thick coat of fresh paint over “everything” The hotel did a great job with the professional photos to make the place look gorgeous. All the hallways, entire pool area are in very rough shape and reminded me of a 70’s built motel that isn’t kept up. My boy loves swimming and wouldn’t hardly swim because the pool water had stuff floating, stuff at the bottom and the light in shallow end wasn’t working Google showed “free breakfast” which I used to help make my choice. “Free breakfast” isn’t a banana and a muffin (and at the very least this should be disclosed)that you have to ask the front desk for. Nothing at the hotel that I seen told us any type of “free breakfast” was included, I had to ask. We choose not to eat at the restaurant for dinner so I won’t review or say anything about that. I understand guests have the option to buy biggbys but every hotel in the past I’ve stayed at offered free coffee in the lobby for guests. Yes there is 4 K cups in your room. I only had brief contact with two different front desk workers and they were decent. Disappointed to say the least. ⭐️

My husband and I were going to be in the Escanaba area for one night, and spent some time debating whether we should stay at the historic Ludington House or the more luxurious-looking Terrace Bay. Based on the photos on the website, we chose the Terrace Bay. We failed to read the fine print and were sorely disappointed.

In our defense, we didn’t expect to pay $145 for a dingy motel room from the 1980s. I’m not above staying in dingy motel rooms — I do so fairly often when I travel for work and rarely complain. However, I typically pay about a third of what we paid at Terrace Bay and know what I’m getting into. Had we read very closely on the website, we may have noticed that SOME of the rooms have been renovated, but not all. Guess which one we got.

This kind of advertising falls just short of willfully deceptive, but it could certainly be clearer that what you see on the website may not be what you get. Had we just needed a place to crash for the night we wouldn’t have paid as much as we did, and I’m bitterly disappointed that we were duped into choosing a cheap motel over a historic location. I’ll give 2/5 because at the very least, the view was nice.

We decided to stop here as part of our road trip, but when we got to our rooms we realized we paid 130$ per night per room for a scam. The photos that the hotel posts are completely different from the reality, we had 2 very old room, stinking of cigarettes really bad, and there were hairs in the shower. The front desk lady was very nice at giving us a refund, but we still had to drive 2h at night for the next available hotel and completely destroyed our vacation plans. Avoid this place.

What a great room, just like last year. Bottom level facing the Bay. The remodeled rooms are designed sooo nice. Color block gray walls, and mixed gray/tan brick wall, white coffered ceiling with specifically placed track lighting, wood look floors, and low profile burnt orange chair and love seat for that punch of color. And, well placed mirrors. Thank you. Big wall mirror in room, floor length in hall, and large in bathroon. Great sink hardware too. Great job !! I hear they still have some yet to remodel, so make sure you ask. The Bay view can't be beat, it is literally right out your patio door. And your whole wall is windows and patio door !! The hallways and public areas are sooo nice too. The artwork in the rooms and down the hallways are the owners own photographs, showing locations. The on-site restaurant, Freshwater, is excellent, and Chris was fantastic. It is upscale and pricey. But the food and presentation are tops. The only downside is for the price, free breakfast could be offered. Some attention to the poolhouse may also already be on their list. The wood ceiling and giant beams is great. Maintain roof, floor needs redone, replace old wood railing with maintenance free white rail to match one visible outside, and paint walls same as hallways, white chairs are already there, then done. Will always stay here when I'm up this way.

This motel has been around a long time, and rooms have been nicely updated. While original size may be small by today's standards, they were quite comfortable and clean in a pine motif. Location was attached to great restaurant and Plaza with several amenities.

We were headed through the UP and had reserved a lake side renovated room before our trip. Upon arrival, I was told the room I reserved was no longer available, and had been put in an old parking lot view room. The front deal clerk has certainly not had any training in hospitality, and told me I could take or leave the room. No price adjustment, no apologies—not a care was given. I had my family in the car and everyone was tired, so I reluctantly checked into the sub-par room.
The hallway smelled nasty, the rug had curiously disgusting stains on it, and the beds were blow up mattress bouncy—sad and truly shows a lack of caring by the management.
The ads online are super misleading—I was able to peek in a renovated room someone was checking out of. Cheap finishes abound—they slapped lipstick on a pig and spent their money on professionally edited promo pictures instead.
Beware. We always like to support local businesses, especially in small hardworking UP towns. But this management isn’t trying to create repeat customers...they are counting on people who already booked being stuck with no other options and paying premium prices for this sad excuse for a hotel.
We have shared this with friends and family, and hope it helps fellow travelers during their adventures.

Our lakeside room was a newly renovated one and it was one of the best rooms we've stayed in. The property is far from the main road so no noise. The indoor pool, restaurant, and common areas(outside or inside) were very nice, always clean. The entire staff made us feel at home and always had time to chat about the area. We will be returning soon for pleasure instead of business and staying here instead of anywhere else. The price of room was comparable to most other area hotels given the season and nearby events but we feel we got a great deal for the price.

July 2021. A lot of renovated rooms and hallways but work is ongoing. You can choose between renovated or not but the price difference is not that much so take a renovated room if one is open

It is right off the main road. There is no traffic noise. The location is beautiful. Please insist on a room facing the lake, That is the whole experience.
