The Appalachian Mountain Club's Cold River Camp has been providing guests an authentic traditional New England hiking camp experience for nearly 100 years. Cold River Camp is a community-oriented camp in the beautiful and unspoiled Cold River Valley in the eastern portion of the White Mountains. Daily hiking is the primary activity, on led group hikes or on your own, with a swim in Cold River afterward as a particular reward. Evenings are spent relaxing, perhaps with a book or chatting with other guests, feet up on the lodge porch or in front of the massive stone fire place, or engaging in lively board games, weekly dances, or presentations by trip leaders, and other low-keyed activities. Appetizing dinners and breakfasts are served family style in the lodge; you make your own trail lunch from provisions put out in the morning. Accommodations are rustic cabins. Separate male and female hot showers and flush toilets are provided. Locally there are terrific trails, summits and water features. Guests are also within striking distance of the Presidential range and much of the rest of the White Mountains area. In addition to hiking there are great opportunities for canoeing/kayaking and road (paved and Forest Service) biking.

I've just returned from a magical weekend at AMC's Cold River Camp. The place is beautiful, the people running the camp are delightful, food is wonderful, facilities for a campground are charming and comfortable. I can't express how perfect a vacation spot in a beautiful unspoiled part of the White Mountains this campground is.

I used to go with my cousins when I was under 10. Last year I brought my family (10 and 6) to CRC for the first time. It was wonderful! My kids loved the freedom of being able to wander the campground more-or-less unsupervised. They loved playing with other kids. They loved playing in the river, going on the canoe trip down the Saco, the short hikes, making their own lunches, being able to control so much of their own lives in a way they just can't at home. I loved the people! From the other guests to the staff, everyone shares a deep love for the outdoors and nature. The staff does a great job preparing the cabins and the meals, while the guides (AMC volunteers/members) do a wonderful job putting together hikes, walks and other outings that range from kid-friendly to very challenging. The food is outstanding, and the cabins are perfect in their rustic simplicity. While it seems expensive when signing the check, the fact of the matter is that if we went anywhere else, it would easily cost as much, if not much, much more. I highly recommend Cold River Camp--and your family will love you for taking them!

AMC's Cold River Camp in North Chatham, NH is a wonderful place to bring a family for a week of outdoor activity. The focus of the camp and most guests is hiking in the surrounding mountains. It is very kid-friendly, and all meals are served family style in the central lodge.

My mother and father started taking me to Cold River when I was four years old. I am now twenty and have been back every summer. The community that surrounds cold river is an incredible testament to the beauty of the white mountains. As a product of Cold River's influence I have always loved hiking and recently finished up the four-thousand footers of New Hampshire. Growing up at Cold River I feel that I can say that it is a place for anyone of any ability, age or disposition. The only requirements are a love of the outdoors and good company.

OK, so here's the deal. You come to Cold River Camp for a week. Families predominate, but singles and couples are abundant. The premise is that it's a hiking camp operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club, where you pay one price per person which includes your private, rustic, cabin and all your meals and hikes led by experienced hike leaders and naturalists. We come from California and our air fare is more than a week at Camp. The food is great and the cabins are comfortable with a good bed and mattress, chair and dresser, and wood burning fireplace. Oil or battery lamps and towels are provided. Restrooms with electricity and hot showers are nearby and CLEAN. The daily hikes vary from easy to difficult or if you prefer you can strike out on your own or simply relax in the library or lodge. Bottom line is that you relax among people from all walks of life who quickly become friends. You don't cook, clean, clear dishes or do any chores. And, perhaps most importantly, the setting is magnificent. This is a retreat that will truly recharge your batteries. My only complaint: While there is WiFi, it is only available outdoors in an area with lots of mosquitos and it is weak. If they would put WiFi in the recreation room or library, the Camp would be perfect.
