What I guess I should have realized, even though most reviews don't mention it, is that this motel is RIGHT.ON.THE HIGHWAY. A main highway through the town. The noise was unbearable. There was very little sleep to be had by either my husband or me, which says a lot because I can sleep through almost anything. I actually laid awake at 3am considering an attempt at checking into another hotel. Our room's condition wasn't great. I could tell it'd been updated, including the bathroom with a newer tiled shower, but the floor in the room did not feel clean. There was a dead fly smashed into the wall by the fridge, a bug smeared on the ceiling, and gnats all over the ceiling in the bathroom. Behind the baseboard heater in the bathroom was a cluster of dusty cobwebs full of bug carcasses too. The highlight of our stay was that the people working the front desk were friendly.…
Stayed here a few years ago and, based in reviews, stayed again. Looks a bit more rundown on the outside. Still clean and surprisingly quiet given the location right on highway 2. Shower is very small and furnishings could use an update. For the price, but not a bad stop to sleep. (Apparently, the motel was recently purchased by the owner of the restaurant next door. Hopefully there will be some investments!)
Booked online because of the great reviews. Driving up to the motel I had my doubts. The place looked old and run down. But when we opened the door to our room, we were amazed at how nice it was. The beds were so comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful. Loved the shower. Only one thing could be a drawback. They really need to put up a room darkening curtain in the room. I'm still giving this 5 stars. The owners were very friendly and there were muffins, juice and coffee in the office the next morning. (after staying at other motels during the COVID, having a snack was a plus) The restaurant next door was great. Friendly staff and food delicious.
The room we were given had dirty walls, carpet, doors. Since the room was filthy they probably didn't do a good job of sanitizing it to prevent spread of Covid. Would not stay again. One positive was that the receptionist were friendly.
We stayed one night during Lake Michigan Circle Tour. Your first impression may be to keep on driving, as the outside appears slighty tired. However, the old addage, you can't judge a book by its cover applies at The Sunset Lodge. Completely renovated bathroom and king-size bed with lots of comfy pillows. Great night's sleep and refreshing shower in the a.m. Packaged breakfast bars and coffee in the office for morning farewell. Bonus after a long day of riding was the diner next door for dinner
