I traveled to West Michigan at last minute to attend a family member's memorial. Not really knowing where to stay I did a little search on Trip Advisor and came across The Dunes. I extended my stay a bit so I could explore and enjoy the area. The Saugatuck/Douglas area was a really nice spot, with great restaurants, awesome beach and this great spot, The Dunes! I didn't know until the day before my arrival that it was Mr. Michigan Leather weekend at The Dunes (was surprised I could get a room), so that made the weekend even more fun! I met some great, friendly people who included solo me in their groups and had an awesome time. Many hours at the pool, great bars (inside and out) that served pretty much everything available, music was really good and I enjoyed the DJ at the tea dance. Every team member was really nice and friendly - from the housekeepers to the bartenders. I was impressed how meticulously kept the property was, my room was spotless and comfortable. Will definitely be back for a bit more time, with better planning to enjoy the area!

Hi Rick! I am happy that we could help make your trip to Michigan a little better! Mr. Michigan Leather Weekend is always a blast and I am thrilled that a room was available for you then! It turned out to be amazing weather that weekend for a last little pool party. Definitely check out our event calendar online and plan another fun filled weekend here at The Dunes Resort! Thank you! I wanted to like this place. The resort is gay-owned and has been in business for quite some time. After reading previous reviews, I believe that the owners want to improve the guest experience, so I hope this feedback reaches them. When I stay at a hotel I have three basic requirements for my room. The room should be clean, the temperature should be easy to control, and the room should be dark at night. My room at the Dunes was clean and the temperature was easy to control, but the room was not dark at night. My room was on the second level of the building facing the pool. I assume that lighting outside the rooms is for safety purposes, but why not have blackout curtains in the rooms? Many, many hotels have figured this out. These rooms only have wooden blinds. They were not effective. I could easily walk around the room without my glasses on and could see everything. I probably could have read a book. I've attached a photo of how bright it is outside the window. I took the picture at 4:30 a.m. As you can see, it looks like it's the middle of the day.

Hello! Thank you for taking time to write a review about us! I appreciate your comments. We do have to have lights outside of the motel buildings for safety reasons. I understand that with the blinds in the rooms it could allow for some of the light to enter the room. I will talk with the maintenance team to look at options to see what we can do to help the stop light from entering the rooms at night. We hope to see you again soon! Thank you, Taylor

The Dunes continues to exceed expectations. Jaime at the Front Desk was helpful and is an excellent ambassador for the property. Housekeeping team is top notch . Centrally located to both the Saugatuck Shopping & Diner venues, an easy walk to the city center of Douglas and a short drive to lake Michigan and Oval Beach.

The Dunes was an amazing resort. The rooms were very comfortable, and my party slept well in the lovely beds. The whole resort was exceptionally clean. The pool area is beautiful with private-ish alcoves to sit in around the pool. The outside decks are large, on two levels, and big enough to accommodate any size group or meeting. The meals were delicious. But the best part of The Dunes is the staff. Each and every one were right there for any concerns, and quickly resolved any issue or need. For example, I left a small bag in the nightstand and did not realize it until I arrived home. When I called the next day, they immediately sent it to me, packed gently so it did not get damaged. If you are going to Douglas, please consider staying here. I know I will be going back! Thank you for a stress free, wonderful weekend.

Many things tire with age, become lackluster and lose their appeal...not The Dunes. My first time visiting was over 20 years ago, and I was just as impressed returning after quite some time to find it even better than I remembered it. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The rooms are spacious and clean and the upgrades are quite nice. My favorite place to spend time is the pool area; the facelift it was given is amazing. The bartenders are all excellent and the menu can't be beat...I spent the entire day out there reading and relaxing for two days. Tea Dance is still a special part of a Sunday and The Cabaret is always fun, no matter who is entertaining. Greg, Danny and Mike should be very proud of their thriving establishment. My best wishes for your continued success. I look forward to my next visit to The Dunes! 😄

Off season visit was lovely with the hot tub. Wish there was silverware in the houses but otherwise, all needs met. Friendly staff, lesbian friendly and the location is close to downtown. A bit of a ghost town during off season which only added to the calmness of the winter compared to the raging music of the summer

I've been a frequent patron of this establishment for over 20 years and have enjoyed their well-kept grounds, clean establishment and enjoyable bar and pool. My disabled partner and I were there the weekend of October 1, which happened to coincide with a rubber fetish weekend. We were literally chased from the pool area, into our car, which was then blocked from existing the parking lot (both in front and behind) by motorcycles and surrounded by people in rubber threatening to harm us and coming into our open windows. The owners banned us from the property for reporting this assault to police. It is a nice property but please realize the owners allowed an assault on their property (which continued to become a chase on the highway), the banned loyal patrons who were trying to leave peacefully. Their ethics and intent fly in the face of a safe space for our community.

Compared with other LGBTQ properties we’ve stayed at in the past, The Dunes was quite a disappointment. We had the misfortune of booking a “lower cottage,” which turned out to be a damp walk-out basement. The smell of mildew and urine forced us to check out early and continue our vacation elsewhere. Despite running a dehumidifier nonstop, all of our clothes now smell damp and mildew-y. The bathroom lacked basic storage and the toilet wouldn’t stop running. To add insult to injury, the sofa in the sitting area was a broken-down sleeper sofa and nearly impossible to sit on comfortably (we stuffed a blanket and two pillows under the cushions to make it comfortable). A few positives… the staff was friendly and attentive and it was apparent the owners have been making investments in the public spaces and it appeared at least one of the main hotel buildings has been updated. I hope they continue to improve their rooms, although it would take a lot to convince us to return.

Hi Scott, I'm not sure it's you, but if you are the Scott I think I did see that we refunded your night that you checked out early. Again, my bad, but my memory isn't as good as it used to . Did you comment to the front desk? I won't make a bunch of excuses. We had some terrible rain earlier this month, and we have been battling the damp. We had several repairs scheduled but continue to be delayed due to finding people to do the work. I don't recall anyone commenting about a damaged sofa sleeper, I'll check on our end. I hope you did comment to the office to give us a chance to fix sofa and/or toilet. As at least the toilet would have been an easy fix. Sorry your stay wasn't want you had hoped. I feel that the property and the product we serve are top notch. We continue to upgrade and improve the property every year. COVID has delayed a few things as has the lack of service people. Thank you for the comments and hopefully you'll give us a chance again in the future.

At $200 per room per night, I expected so much more. It was like staying at a motel 6 from tge 1980s. The rooms were extremely dated and lacked basic amenities. I had to go hunt down an iron and microwave. The only mirrors were makeshift headboards. The karaoke and cabaret were nice events. The cabaret performer’s talent was on par with Celine Dion (no exaggeration). Though if you say the show starts at 10 l, I expect the show to start at10, not to be waiting fir the doors to open at 10:15. I don’t think my group was the intended audience fir this establishment. The clientele was mostly older (estimating 60yo+) white men. We were black men in our 20s-early 40s. The music sucked. I understand dance/techno music, but how about add some variety. There were at least 3 potential dance spaces, offer different genres to appeal to different audiences. Cons: dated rooms, value for price, weather (rained whole time, not their fault I know), lack of diversity among guests and music, restaurant not open during hours stated. Pros; pool, friendly/attentive staff, quaint surrounding town, nice selection of items in gift shop. Overall, we made the most of it. Can’t say anyone of us will be eager to return though.

I'm sorry that your stay wasn't what you would have hoped. I feel good about our product. We are continuing to update our rooms, bars, grounds, etc. All hotel rooms have coffee makers and refrigerators. Cable TV, A/C, etc. We do not put Irons and Ironing boards in the rooms or hair dryers, but they are available upon request. Curious what basic amenities we lacked, as we always want to be better. the bathrooms do have the entire wall above the sink is a mirror (I'm guessing you were in a king room, as they do have the mirror headboards. Maybe you were here during Kelly and Rick, she is a rock star in the Cabaret. Again, if this is the weekend, because that girl can sing, she was stuck in traffic (which continues to be an issue this summer due to construction) and she was late getting here, making the sound check later than expected. Hopefully it was worth the extra 15 minute wait. I believe she still went on at the posted start time of 10:30p. Our normal audience is 21 plus and on any given week the crowd can be younger or older and I think our customers are diverse, but again every weekend is different. Our restaurant is open Thursday - Monday 11a - 5p and I know that has been open during this time since we opened the restaurant over the Memorial Weekend. Sorry about the weather, I wish we were having covid summer weather which was perfect every single day. Regarding music, we are limited in outdoor sound due to a sound ordnance, so at 10p the outside sound needs to be much lower than dancing music. We get a lot of positive comments about our DJ Keller and I'm sorry it didn't work from you and your friends. I hope your group will give us another try.
