Detailed Reviews
My husband and I came to the area for the annual Tulip Festival. This motel was very reasonably priced and did not jack up their cost per night because of the festival the way that many other hotels we looked at did. We booked a standard queen room. The room was small but what it lacked in size, it made up for in quality. It was extremely clean, had a coffee maker, microwave, mini fridge, hair dryer, and small ironing board. The back of the room had a door that led to the backyard. Comfortable seating outside each room door under an overhang, a beautiful deck with tables and chairs to sit in sun or a covered area of the deck with comfortable couches, several Adirondack chairs around a fire pit a little further out in the yard, and a hot tub were all available for use. A continental breakfast was available each morning in a room similar to a sunroom. Rachel (the owner, I think) was so sweet. She replied quickly to my emails, was able to accommodate a couple of requests before we got to the motel and was very quick to help us with other requests we had while there. She even came to our room one afternoon to fix the tv after I screwed things up with the remote! I can’t recommend Blue Star Motel enough!

Very well kept vintage roadside motel. If you want to feel like you have gone into the past when life was less hectic, this is a good place to go, and still have internet access with a retro 60s vibe.
I like mom and pop motels, as they remind me of vacations with my parents in the early 80s and also that Black and White Classic movie "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable. So few independent motels still exist along our roadsides and even fewer are as well kept as the Blue Star.
Very clean rooms, very quiet, many towels, large shower, hygienic and pet friendly floors. Love the late night contact free check in, perfect as I was running behind.
I also have my elderly dog with because he seems to want to be near me all the time lately. I thought that the first floor with no stairs or elevators with a direct outside entrance to the room was a good fit as he has not traveled much in recent years aside from camping. I thought the larger chain hotels with shared hallways and people walking the halls at all hours might make him antsy, and the stairs could be hard on his hips.
I chose this motel because I am traveling for work to retrieve some plants from a nursery in Holland. I looked at the satellite picture to see if the parking area would accommodate my needs. I am pulling a small 8 foot trailer, thankfully there are 2 parking spaces that if you have some skill backing, you can position yourself perfectly to pull right out onto the highway with ease.

Before we even arrived, we were texted a code to unlock our room. We had traveled all day and taken a Lake Michigan sailboat cruise. We stopped for supper at a local (like less than 1/2 a mile away) brewery for supper. Our room was spotless and relatively newly remodeled. Comfy, very comfy bed. According to my wife, the best bed of our trip. Outside the back of our room ( we had a back door) was a brand new patio w/ seating, tables and a large hot tub. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner as we had drinks on the patio that evening. He told all he had put into this location in the last year or so to bring it up to where it is now. Will definitely stay here again if we are ever in Saugatuck again.

This motel was a big disappointment and absolutely NOT worth the amount of money we paid. First of all, there is no one on site to assist. You get your room entry code via text and you are on your own.
Although clean and quiet, the room is very small and dark. There is a lamp on one side of the bed and one across the room both sporting what appear to be 40 watt bulbs. There is also a small light over the microwave/refrigerator alcove. Reading while relaxing in bed after a long day of travel is not an option.
I could only use my CPAP by putting it in the closet next to the bed and stretching the cords over. The closest electric outlet was on another wall.
The toilet is not bolted securely to the floor, so it wobbles. The shower has absolutely no water pressure. It comes out as barely more than a trickle.
The continental breakfast is almost non existent. It has high sugar juices, and all high carb bread products. Diabetics beware.
It does answer the question of why we had to prepay when no other motel on our 3 week trip required it.

We are so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us at the Blue Star Motel. Due to our size we are not for everyone. However we try to be as accommodating, affordable, clean, and comfortable for all. We are a small property built in the 50s with modern updates. Some things like additional lighting can't be addressed without re-hauls in the structure to install overhead lighting and expanding the size of the room to allow for two nightstands instead of one in some of the rooms. I wish I had known prior to your arrival so we could have accommodated your need for the CPAP machine and sleeping on the left side only. By the time you were checked in we were full and could not move you to a new room. In our email & when booking we communicate the mobile check in process as we don't like this to be a surprise for our guests. We also often recommend our sister property Starlite Resort which has a traditional lobby. However we did speak over the phone and were available by text so we are always close by, we also check on the property throughout the evening and in the morning. I believe you met with Walt one of our owners in the nook. And I checked on you in the morning to make sure your freezer pack froze in the fridge which you were concerned about. So though there is no lobby, our service is very attentive I believe. We immediately fixed the toilet upon your check out. It was a broken flange. It's common practice in Saugatuck / Douglas to take a deposit at the time of booking. I think smaller tourist towns practice this to help limit no shows as our season is very short and every reservation helps us succeed. I do hope the rest of your 3 week trip was delightful and again sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us! Kindly, Rachel

Have been going to Blue star for many years, the previous owners were extremely nice and accommodating. The new owners are very rude and have little to no customer service. Will definitely not be returning and will take business elsewhere.

Raymond - Sorry you were not happy with the changes brought on by our new ownership and how we see to run the two properties. We just weren't able to accommodate your requests but I'm sure with so many great properties around Saugatuck / Douglas you will find one that fits you perfectly. Kindly, Rachel

The smoke alarm 'chirped' multiple times during the night. An email was sent that did not receive a response requesting a 'discount on a future stay'. There are multiple concerns this situation raises, during a phone call I was informed that I should have called the emergency line, placing the blame for the situation squarely on myself. There was no one in the office during check in or check out, but I was supposed to know to call the emergency line that was not shared in anything that was sent.

My husband and I spent only one night here when moving to Douglas. Immaculately clean, comfy bed, fluffy towels and large LG tv. What's not to like! A very good value and close to everything. The room is small, but in this great area you're mostly out and about.

What a pleasant place! So very peaceful and pleasant, kudos to whoever revived this place. Everything about the decor is perfect, and especially the bed! (Believe it or not sometime that is what gets overlooked in a motel.). Well done!
And thank you to the folks who manage it - you’ve all succeeded in making our weekend away just what we needed. We appreciate you all!

Pet friendly motel with a nice large gazebo and fire ring, and outdoor patio with seating. Continental breakfast to get the day started. Good reasonable rates. Small rooms but adequate for an individual or a couple. Rooms are cute and completely updated boutique motel. This was the only reasonably priced hotel available near Holland MI during Tulip Time. Very glad we found it and would definitely return. Could use more selection for breakfast like yogurt.

This was last stop on 2 week trip to northern great lakes. After Sleeping Bear Dunes during the day, we chose this as our overnight on way home to Missouri. Much better than expected as were just looking for a simple quiet nights rest at fair price. Room clean and adequate. Park right in front of door. Back door to nice porch and recently added deck area. Hot tub looks brand new but we did not use. Several restaurants close. Breakfast was simple (no eggs etc,)

As far as I know all the rooms are non smoking. We did see someone smoking on the patio.
They have that option.
It's not a far drive at all.
