After being a hospitality professional for over 20 years, my expectations for exemplary service and accommodations is high, but I try to lower my anticipation before checking in. The Atheneum? An all-suite hotel redeemed my faith and believe in outstanding service and immaculate properties! Wow. Just wow.... The hotel is conveniently located within easy walking distance of numerous venues, attractions, restaurants and neighborhoods that make up downtown Detroit. The hotel is surrounded by numerous options that can keep you well-fed and entertained throughout your stay. Parking is available through the hotel valet ($30 per day), but opt for the clean, secure and safe public garage across the street to save a few bucks. Click the Metropolis QR code and set up is finished within minutes. The app allows you to come and go as you please without dealing with a ticket booth or long lines. Detroit’s People Mover is within steps of the hotel and offers quick and cheap transport to the various neighborhoods at $0.75 per ride! Let’s talk about the hotel… It is beautiful! Marble lobby. Plush seating. Lively bar. Fully-staffed front desk, security, bellman and valet departments. Each and every employee we encountered was helpful, friendly and offered suggestions for dining and entertainment. The hotel is connected to a nearly shuttered atrium/arcade with a once-gorgeous multi-story waterfall (it was out of service and drained), but access (indoors) gets you to Fishbones Restaurant (highly recommend). Elevators are plentiful and fast. Common areas are very clean. Inside the suite, it was luxuriously appointed with traditional décor that felt like we were VIPs. Wonderful walls of windows (although we faced the less-than-appealing empty building that houses the ‘gentlemen’s club.’). We love the suite (bedroom and living room separate) arrangement and huge bathrooms stocked with fluffy towels and complete with deep soaking tub. There is a mini frig in the living room and coffee maker. No microwave, so plan your left overs accordingly. We are members of the iPrefer program, but unfortunately were not offered early check in, late check out or room upgrade. Wi-Fi is complimentary and connects easily within a few clicks. The program allowed us to save a few bucks, but I was not prepared for the nearly 15% add-on charges of the local county taxes, suite tax and development/assessment fees. Whoa! Even with recovery from the add-on fees, I’d still highly recommend the Atheneum because of the superior service, beautiful property, fantastic amenities and proximity to entertainment and dining. If you’ve never experience an all-suite hotel, visit the Atheneum for a sweet experience!

This was a wonderful place! Our room was spacious and clean. Bathroom was large with a deep bathtub. Loved the separation from the sitting/tv area to the step down bedroom. Nice selection of coffee pods. Very quiet in our room at night. Beds and pillows were so comfy. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. They only offer valet parking at $30 per night which was fine because Greektown was only a block away and they had a shuttle to and from Little Caesars Arena. We did not try the restaurant but the menu looked good. There was a separate bar area in the pretty lobby as well. Highly recommend!

This is a gorgeous hotel and every detail was right. We stayed during the busy time of an international marathon in town. But the service level was still high, from the bellman and valet to the restaurant and housekeeping. The suites have everything you need and our 3 generation family enjoyed two rooms comfortably. We would stay again. Because we had Kids with us a pool would be nice but understand this is primarily a downtown business hotel.

We loved this hotel. The rooms were large and very comfortable. We had 2 queen beds that were very comfortable. Valet parking was reasonable and we’ll run too. It’s not a new hotel but it’s well taken care of. Staff was very friendly and acted genuinely interested in talking with us.

The meal got off to a good start with the grilled octopus appetizer. When the entrees came out, they were accompanied by mashed potatoes instead of the roasted. Replacing them took most of the meal. When we cut into the meats, the filet (ordered well done) and the lamb chops (ordered medium) both came out rare. We didn't say anything, but our server saw the cut filet and insisted on returning it to the kitchen for more cooking. The manager came to our table and apologized profusely. He said our meals would be on the house (we had made no request). The steak took a long time to come back, but other than a couple of pieces which had already been cut off the filet before they were returned for more cooking, it was still under cooked. The manager saw it and wanted to cook another one. We didn't want to wait for that and he offered to cook one for us to take it with us, which we also turned down. He wanted to have us come back for a meal, but we explained we were just traveling through the city overnight. As we finished the meal, the server said the manager wanted to provide us with desserts and we choose a (wonderful) lava cake to share. The restaurant charged us for everything but the dessert.

Our disappointment started when we contacted the hotel twice to ask for an early check in but they never got back to us. Once we did get to our room on the third floor it smelled like a grease trap. We dropped off our bag and headed out as we had a concert to go to. When we finally returned to the room after 1AM in desperate need of a shower we discovered the bathroom was never cleaned. There was a pile of dirty towels on the shower floor. Housekeeping was at a lose for how to rectify the situation. I had to go to the lobby to find a night manager to help as no one answered the phone. After searching the hotel for about 25 minutes he found us a cleaner room. Once you get out of the lobby it is a dingy old hotel trying to get by with cheap, failed coats of paint. The towels are scratchy and the sheets are rough and smell like bleach.

I was excited to stay here while attending the Taylor Swift concert. However upon arrival was told there would be an early check in fee of $125. I had called earlier in the week about an early check in and they said it would be fine if the room was ready. However, now all of the sudden there is a $125 extra fee. They told me this is what happens for "special events". It feel annoying and like a pure money grab. I then asked if they could just text when the room is ready at 4 pm and they said no I would have to come back in line at 4 pm. I have never experienced this and I travel all over. I would not stay here again because of this. However, besides this, it was a nice hotel with huge suites and in a great location.

We were in Detroit for the weekend going to a show at the Fisher Theatre. Good: The free shuttle within a 5-mile radius was great as the theatre was out of walking distance. 'Captain', the driver was a trip. Front desk staff was kind and helpful. Stayed in the Deluxe King Suite which was very spacious. Lobby is updated and very nice. Didn't eat at the restaurant but got late-night room service, which was satisfying. Not good: the rooms could have used a bit of a face lift; it seemed updated but could have been a bit cleaner there were some carpet stains. Not bad though for the rate of the room.

Nice, roomy suite and you can close off one room from the other, well decorated and well furnished with two TVs. Bathroom counter dirty, some of the lamp bulbs were out of order, could not regulate the heat or cold air and it was roasting and maintenance came up and changed the filter that looked like it hadn't been changed in years and it helped, but I sure wouldn't want to be here in the summer. When he returned with the filter, he just walked right in without knocking or anything. I had it as low as it would go and it was 38° outside and it was still too hot in here. I called room service and I got a message recording saying leave a message, no one ever called me, so I went down to order my food; took a half an hour to get my sandwich and the lady at the bar looked right past me like I wasn't sitting right there to help a man standing sort of behind me who came in after me. He rightfully let her know I was ahead of him. Food was delicious both at lunch and dinner. Bed was comfortable, but a couple of the pillows were very lumpy. I also don't care for decorative pillows touching my pillowcases that I'll be sleeping on as it's not very sanitary. The tub is a great soaking tub, but I have to agree with other reviewers that it is difficult to get in and out of. It's pretty deep and it has a very wide ledge. The remote to the TV barely worked and I could not get the volume to a level I could really hear what was going on. I think it needs new batteries and luckily there was another remote to the other TV and I switched them out and that one worked. I mentioned that and the light bulbs to the maintenance man and he apparently didn't hear me or was too focused on the heater or whatever, but those didn't get addressed. I asked for a wake up at it didn't happen until 6 minutes late and by then I was in the bathroom and the next thing I know two men are pounding on my door telling me they were sent up because they were told I wanted to check out and I hadn't answered the phone. Excuse me, no, I never said anything about checking out when I made the wake up call request and got a huge sigh like I was really bothering her when I made it. I don't need a late wake up call nor people pounding on my door early in the morning which I'm sure bothered everybody else on the floor, and I don't need to be interrupted by the front desk staff nor to argue with her about it. And if they have two guys who can pound on my door at 6:30 in the morning than I don't know that I can give any leeway for possible staffing issues. if they had given me the wake up call when it was asked for instead of late, then this issue would not have occurred. Not the way to start out my day at all. Two nice little private business center rooms, however one computer wouldn't work and the other one needed a password so I had to go to the desk and the woman there gave me a password that didn't work either and she didn't give a rip about the lack of access to the business center. How rude. On the second day of housekeeping, they only emptied the garbage and brought in towels and toiletry articles. The shuttle was on the iffy side because they either weren't available or didn't answer or respond to messages left on their voicemail. They do not run every 15 minutes as advertised. The valet guy said the shuttle had nothing to do with the hotel so he didn't know anything about it. Neighborhood is a little sketchy. While it has a lot of potential, I was not impressed overall, especially for the price. In fact, I should get a partial refund for all the stuff I had to put up with. And manager, please don't bother answering this review with the same cut and paste stock answer you've given everybody else. Address the issues.

I stayed this hotel by myself for business, but the room was specious enough to allow four people. The suite has living room with sofa and desk, bedroom, and a large bathroom. Great value for less than $200 in downtown Detroit. Neighbourhood looked kind of desolated, but there were restaurants in Greektown, and was close to "People Mover".
