Stopped for a lay-over in DTW. Clean, Beautifully designed, spacious. Room was comfortable, and spacious. The only difficulty was the direction on locating the front desk. Needs more signage when entering from the Terminal.

I’ve stayed here a couple times in the past with good experiences, but this most recent stay I was surprisingly disappointed with my experience and the service given at every turn. I emailed the front desk manager about my experience and have yet to receive a reply. As we pulled up to the entrance the bell hop welcomed us by letting us know that all our luggage was very heavy and a lot to carry. When checking in I asked the guy who was checking us in if there was any luggage storage, and he said that there was some storage in the back, but it was clear from how he said it that he would rather us take all of our luggage to the room and call up for a bell hop in the morning. Also, when checking us in he did not give me my options for my welcome gift as a Platinum Elite Bonvoy Member. He simply said, “You want the points for your welcome gift right?” I had to ask what the options were, and that is when he mentioned that breakfast was an option, and that he would have to go to the back room to get the coupons for that if that is what I wanted. I wonder if they are trained to do this as I’m sure providing breakfast at the restaurant cost them more than giving us points. Furthermore, when I came up to the counter a few minutes later to ask a question the lady at the counter kept her eyes down as she was typing at the computer. There was no one else in line, and I am sure she was doing some work, but she sure made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. As we got to our room, we noticed that there was a puddle of water around the toilet area, so I called the front desk. The lady who answered basically, said, “Sorry about that. So . . . are you looking to get a new room or something?” I told her I just wanted to let her know about it and see if something could be done about it. So she sent up someone to fix it. But, it sure felt once again like I was being an inconvenience to the staff. There were also brown flakes in our bathtub as we started to draw a bath for our sons. My wife just cleaned those up and washed out the tub herself because our kids needed a bath soon and we didn’t want to be “trouble” guests. I then went to the restaurant downstairs and ordered a bowl of soup, and when it came out it was barely luke warm. I asked if it could be heated up, and they took it back, microwaved it, and brought it back absolutely scalding. I asked the waitress if they just microwaved the whole bowl, and she just nervously laughed and said, “Yeah, you might want to let it cool down a bit now.” I can’t blame the kitchen staff too much since I asked them to warm it up, but by this time I just kinda figured it was par for the course. Finally, we booked the room for 4 persons, but there were only two towels in the room. By the time our sons bathed, there were no clean, dry towels. I know I could have called for more, but, again, by this time I did not want to be a bother anymore to your staff. However, when the guy came to fix the leaking toilet came in, a housekeeping staff lady, named Theresa I think, was in the hallway and asked us if we would like any more towels. She was thoughtful, kind and proactive. I would also like to say the name of the guy who brought up our luggage to our room was also very kind, helpful and very positive. I wish I knew his name. I have only stayed at Marriott properties for the last 10 years, and I have never written a review like this. I can understand having this kind of experience at a lower tier hotel, but for paying hundreds of dollars for this one night, I expected to have a better experience.

The Westin at DTW is expensive even by airport hotel standards. Room rates were high. While they can justify those rates if the TSA checkpoint is open, the checkpoint was closed the days we arrived and departed at the airport. Without the dedicated hotel TSA checkpoint, the significant premium charged by the Westin is not worth it when compared to the rates of hotels just 5 minutes away. While TSA operations is obviously outside the control of the hotel, the checkpoint is something the hotel uses in marketing and certainly used when pricing nightly room rates. Also, the restaurant and bar prices are marked up way more than the quality of the food. Eating inside the terminal on the other side of security may actually be cheaper. We thought the breakfast inside the Delta Sky Club was better and of a higher quality, even though it's a self-serve buffet. The Sky Club is less than 2 minutes from the hotel if the hotel TSA checkpoint is open. At dinner, a glass of wine costs as much as the whole bottle of wine. Our Marriott Titanium Bonvoy status did get an upgrade and a pre-arrival email albeit once that looked like a form letter. The room was comfortable and it looked renovated in the last 2 or 3 years. Good to very clean. Housekeeping did not use pillowcase protectors or liners, which we would have preferred. In the bathroom, the dark black countertop was dusty and could be better cleaned. It's probably the color and material as that shows everything. Outside of the upgrade and pre-arrival email there was no other Bonvoy recognition. The Club Lounge remains closed. No newspapers. No drink chit. With a closed Club Lounge the hotel should offer a meager 10% or 15% off restaurant prices for guests who could otherwise have Club Lounge access. I'm sure it would stimulate bar and restaurant sales too.

I had a positive Covid-19 test result for my 5 year old. I canceled my reservation and Westin refused a refund. I escalated to a manager, who also refused a refund because my "pre-paid rate was nonrefundable, Covid has been around for a year, this is the risk you take." Way to show some empathy, Westin. We did everything right but 5 year olds aren't eligible for the vaccine! Refusing to refund my hotel makes a horrid situation worse. Delta and the rental car agency both refunded/gave credit back with no problem. I went back through my confirmation email and nowhere in there does it say my reservation is nonrefundable AT ALL, let alone for Covid. Even if that verbiage were easily accessible, that is the worst policy. On the Marriott website I finally found verbiage stating at the very bottom in tiny letters: "For guests with reservations made on or after July 6, 2020, for arrival dates through August 31, 2021, we will allow the reservation to be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled arrival date. Reservations with pre-paid rates and other limited exclusions* will be subject to the rate offer rules communicated at the time of reservation." My reservation was pre-paid. I am extremely unhappy and would not recommend the Westin. Every other travel business makes canceling easy in these uncertain times. I suggest you find a different hotel that does the same.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your note and our sincere apologies for any inconvenience. as you note the benefit of booking a "pre-paid" reservation. with a lower/discounted rate, does indeed state that it is a non-refundable reservation at the time of booking. We, Marriott have certainly exercised every convenience and consideration over the past 18 months, but in this instance that is no longer an option and the terms upon booking are something the property maintains adherence too. Stay well, John R.

Lovely hotel, comfy bed, very nice employees. Room was too warm so they sent someone immediately to fix it. Picked this hotel because we had an early flight since it was at the airport. The only problem is they have 2 terminals and our flight was out of the other terminal so we had to catch a shuttle. They run continuously so it was no problem. Nice room, clean and would stay there again!
